Chapter 32 Dignity is something you earn yourself (Part 1)

Wei Mingshen didn't make a sound or move, but he slept soundly, as if he had fallen asleep.

Su Xueli breathed a sigh of relief, hesitating whether to remove his hand or pretend not to notice and just let him hold her like that.

He's drunk quite a bit. What if I touch him and he wakes up and tries to grope me?

Then I thought, he's fast asleep, he wouldn't even notice if I pushed him away.

She quietly reached out from under the covers, gently grabbed his wrist and pushed him away, then moved her body to the side, but she couldn't move any further, as she was already against the wall.

To her surprise, he took advantage of her advances. As she moved closer, he moved closer to her, his arm resting on her blanket again, and he held her tightly in his arms.

Su Xueli was so nervous that her mind went blank and her whole body started to tremble.

This was the first time in both his lives that he had ever hugged her.

Even though he was asleep and it was unintentional, she was still so excited.

But in the end, she forcefully removed his arm and simply pushed him, saying, "Turn around, you're crowding me."

Wei Mingshen grunted and rolled over.

It's unclear whether he was conscious or unconscious.

Su Xueli didn't sleep well all night and got up early to do straw weaving. Cao Maizi came knocking on the door with a bowl of medicine.

She knew her son must have been drinking at the reunion with his comrades yesterday, so she didn't make him any medicine. This morning, she quickly made some and brought it over for him to drink immediately.

This was the last dose of medicine; Cao Maizi had pinned all her hopes on it.

She got up early, washed her hands, lit an incense stick, and placed it in the incense burner in the courtyard. She prayed that all the gods would come to eat the incense offerings and asked them to send down some magic medicine to her son's herbal medicine so that he could drink it and be cured.

He lit another incense stick for the ancestral tablets and said the same thing.

"Mother, the medicine is ready so early today," Su Xueli asked as soon as she opened the door and saw her mother-in-law.

Cao Maizi complained, "He went out and had fun all day yesterday and didn't take his medicine. I'm making him take it earlier today so it will be effective."

Su Xueli shrugged, feeling genuinely sorry for the mother.

But there was nothing she could do.

Wei Mingshen was still fast asleep when Cao Maizi pulled off the covers, muttering, "You heartless bastard, you know you're taking Chinese medicine and still drinking alcohol, it's so bad for your health and it delays taking your medicine... Hurry up and drink your medicine today, and don't drink alcohol again, okay? You can't even take care of something this important..."

Wei Mingshen opened his eyes with a frown. He was already grumpy in bed, and when he saw the medicine in Cao Maizi's hand, he got angry and turned his back on her in a huff: "I won't drink it."

Cao Maizi slapped him on the back, "You brat, you still dare to act like a spoiled brat? If you dare not drink, I'll call your dad over to beat you up."

Wei Mingshen said, "Even if you call my grandfather over to beat me, I still won't drink."

Su Xueli covered her mouth and laughed; her grandfather had passed away many years ago.

Knowing her son's bad temper, Cao Maizi changed to coaxing him, "I won't call anyone, I won't call anyone to come and hit my good son. My good son is so sensible and obedient, I love him so much, how could I bear to let them hit him. Come on, sit up, I'll feed my son."

Su Xueli had goosebumps all over.

Wei Mingshen wouldn't listen to reason or pressure; he simply refused to drink. He even made excuses: "I still have some undigested alcohol in my stomach; I can't take medicine."

Cao Maizi was so angry that her hands were shaking. As a mother, she wished she could boil her heart into the medicine. This brat of a son didn't care at all. She always had to coax and scare him to drink it. This time, even after coaxing and scareming him, he still wouldn't drink it.

Being a mother is so hard for her!
