As dusk fell, Cao Maizi drove her mule cart back, carrying the drunken Wei Tiezhu and the well-fed Wei Mingyue. As soon as she entered the house, she angrily called out to her son inside, "Shenzi, hurry up and come out and take your father inside. He's drunk again!"
People in this era are greedy, information is not readily available, and relatives rarely keep in touch. When someone gets married, has a baby, or holds a celebration, the men will drink heavily as soon as they meet, and they won't leave the table until they are drunk.
Wei Mingshen and Su Xueli both came out of the house. Cao Maizi scolded his son for his father's despicable behavior while helping his son get the old man out of the car.
Seeing that the old man was too drunk to walk, Wei Mingshen waved to his mother and said, "Don't worry about him, I'll carry him inside."
The drunk man was incredibly heavy, yet Wei Mingshen effortlessly carried him back into the house. Su Xueli secretly praised him: "He's really strong."
She didn't want to go with her father-in-law, so she went back to her room to do straw weaving.
Wei Mingshen carried his father to the bed, and together with his mother, they took off his cotton shoes, cotton clothes and cotton pants, covered him with a quilt, and were about to go out when his mother stopped him.
“I’ve already asked your cousin. The old Chinese medicine doctor in her village who specializes in treating difficult and complicated diseases is still alive. Your cousin also said that he’s exceptionally good at treating men’s diseases. Let’s not delay and go see him tomorrow.”
Wei Mingshen gasped: Another dose of Chinese medicine!
He flatly refused: "I'm not going."
Cao Maizi was extremely anxious. Hearing this, she slapped him on the back of the head in anger and scolded him, "You brat, how can you be so heartless? You don't even care about your own illness. Do you want to drive your parents to their deaths?"
Wei Mingshen pleaded, "Mother, it's not that I don't care, it's just that I've only been drinking Chinese medicine for seven days, and it's almost ruined my stomach. Please let me rest a bit."
"Pah, I've never heard of Chinese medicine ruining your stomach. Even if it does, if it cures your illness and gives me a big, fat grandson, you'd still have to drink it."
Wei Mingshen groaned, "You really are my mother! Since you don't care about me, I'm even less likely to listen to you."
After saying that, he stepped over the threshold and bolted the door from the outside.
Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can.
Su Xueli could tell he was unhappy at a glance and asked, "What's wrong? Did Dad get drunk and yell at you?"
Wei Mingshen said with a dark face, "I have to see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor and take medicine again."
Su Xueli gloated, "If you're sick, you have to take medicine. Why worry so much?"
“You’re not the one taking the medicine!” he yelled at her.
"Why would I take medicine if I'm not sick?" she said, shaking her head smugly.
Wei Mingshen suddenly gritted his teeth and said, "Why didn't you say you were sick back then? I must be out of my mind."
Su Xueli asked curiously, "What illness do you think I have? You said I can't have children, but you should wait a month or two before saying that."
Wei Mingshen blinked, grinned mischievously, and leaned his head close to her face, saying, "I told you you're a stone woman and can't be touched."
"Get out! Get out!" Su Xueli was both ashamed and angry, and she grabbed a handful of straw and threw it at him.
"Hey, hey, you've messed up all the straw I arranged. Stop it, stop it," Wei Mingshen said, taking the straw and coaxing her.
"You scoundrel! You bastard!" Su Xueli cursed, still seething with anger.
Wei Mingshen said, "How can you be so easily fooled? I didn't say anything. Is it a case of 'the magistrate is allowed to set fires while the common people are forbidden to light lamps'? I'm a man, and I'm willing to admit my mistakes, but you can't even make a joke? You're so petty."
Su Xueli blushed and said, "It just won't work."
Wei Mingshen said, "Okay, okay, I won't joke with you anymore. But let's make a deal. Can you cover for me when I need to see a doctor? I really can't drink that Chinese medicine; it's too awful."
Su Xueli laughed again: "No, if you're sick, you have to get treatment."
Wei Mingshen had no choice but to beg for mercy: "Grandma, I admit my mistake, okay? I promise I'll never joke with you again, and I'll only say things you like to hear, and I'll make you feel comfortable. How about that?"
Su Xueli smiled broadly and said, "Well, you're smart. However, I can't stop you from seeing a doctor, but I can pay for it for you."
