Wei Mingshen said, "Let me be clear with you, no. It was Su Xueli who wanted to divorce me; she was the one who brought it up."
Wei Mingyue looked shocked and disdainful. "She asked you for a divorce? What right does she have?"
Wei Mingshen's expression hardened. "Mingyue, you've made things difficult for her these past few days since she got married. I haven't had a chance to have a proper talk with you yet, so let's talk today."
Wei Mingyue immediately looked panicked. She said guiltily, "What's there to talk about? I never benefited from anything; she always managed to turn the tables on me..."
"That's because she's smart and not easy to bully. Otherwise, she would be your dinner table, someone you can humiliate at will."
"Are you even my own brother? How can you criticize me like this for the sake of a divorced stranger?"
“When you made things difficult for her, she wasn’t an outsider. She was my wife and your sister-in-law. Disrespecting her is disrespecting me.”
Wei Mingyue was so frightened that she shrank her head into her neck and explained in a low voice, "Brother, don't say that. Back then, I didn't respect her because I knew you didn't like her and was forced to marry her by our parents."
I was upset with Meizhi because I was standing up for her. Brother, it's all in the past, let's not talk about her anymore, okay?
"What are you two arguing about so late at night?" Cao Maizi came over to mediate.
Wei Mingshen stared sternly at Wei Mingyue and said, "Remember this: don't interfere in my affairs anymore, not even for a moment, or don't blame me for being impolite."
Wei Mingyue was so frightened that she shrank behind Cao Maizi and didn't dare to say a word.
Cao Maizi realized that the siblings had argued because of Su Xueli. She didn't side with her daughter, but glared at her, sighed, and pulled her out.
Wei Mingshen sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the ground, before finally taking off his clothes and getting into bed.
Lying in bed, his mind was completely filled with Su Xueli; he just couldn't shake her off.
He couldn't sleep and felt restless. Suddenly, he grabbed the pillow that Su Xueli had slept on and hugged it to his chest. Miraculously, his heart immediately calmed down, as if it had been drifting and swaying everywhere and had now returned to its place.
He smelled her scent on the pillow, closed his eyes, and gradually drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, he rode his bicycle to town without even having breakfast. When he got to the alley, he suddenly remembered: Had her mother left or not?
He's never been afraid of anyone, but now he's terrified of his ex-mother-in-law. If she hasn't left, he'll run into her and be in big trouble.
She was so kind and gentle before, treating him, her son-in-law, like a treasure. But she turned on him in an instant. Just like the weather in June, a woman's face changes faster than turning the pages of a book.
He thought for a moment and decided to go out for breakfast first. He figured she would be heading back by then, since she was a woman and had a lot to do in the morning.
He went to the market to have breakfast, and after he finished, he brought some back for Su Xueli.
He walked to the alley entrance again, still somewhat timid. He peeked inside, but when he didn't see Liu Fengying, he turned in.
When he reached the gate, he saw it was wide open. Just as he was about to peek inside, a large yellow dog suddenly darted out. Luckily, he threw a meat bun at it in time, otherwise he would have had to fight the dog with his bare hands...
"Dahuang, step back!" Su Xueli came over when she heard the commotion.
Then she said to Wei Mingshen, "It's you. Come in quickly, my mother has left."
Wei Mingshen let out a long sigh, patted his chest, and said, "Seeing you will require overcoming one hurdle after another, each one difficult!"
Su Xueli laughed and asked him, "What were you doing here last night?"
Wei Mingshen gave her a meaningful look. "Want to know?"
