Chapter 4 I Want a Divorce, He Can't Resist (Part Two)

Su Xueli touched the gray hairs growing at her mother's temples and said softly, "Mother, don't worry, I've been doing well these past few days. It's just..."

"Just what?"

"But I want a divorce because he... is impotent."

"Huh...what!" Liu Fengying froze.

How could such a tall and strong young man... be sick?

"Ni'er, sit still. I'll talk to your father about this..." She left with unsteady steps.

Liu Fengying led her husband, Su Guojun, into the storeroom and whispered this unspeakable matter in his ear.

Su Xueli sat quietly on her small bed, waiting for her parents to come and discuss the divorce.

But then her mother arrived, her eyes red. "Girl," she said, "your father said that illnesses can be treated, but we can't just get a divorce like this. That's not fair."

"What!" Su Xueli exclaimed in surprise.

"Mother, if we don't get a divorce, am I still your biological daughter?"

Liu Fengying quickly covered her mouth, "Oh my goodness, there are people outside, don't let anyone hear, it would be so embarrassing. Daughter, listen to your mother, you can't tell anyone except your parents. It's already bad enough for a man to have this disease, if others find out, how can he live with himself?"

Su Xueli removed her hand and said, "You and Dad are truly the best in-laws in the world, but I'm not a good daughter-in-law. I insist on a divorce. I'm not going back with him today; we'll go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to finalize the divorce tomorrow."

Liu Fengying looked outside and lowered her voice, saying, "My silly daughter, that's the man you insisted on marrying, and now you're already asking for a divorce after only three days. How are your parents supposed to explain this to our relatives and neighbors?"

Furthermore, if you file for divorce, you'll have to give them all the dowry and wedding expenses they paid for marrying you. Do you have that kind of money?

Su Xueli chickened out: She didn't have any money.

Liu Fengying said, "Listen to me, don't be willful. If he's sick, get him treated. Your parents will find him a doctor and pay for it."

Su Xueli's father was an old kiln worker, and now he works as a technician at a new kiln factory in the village. His salary is not low, so the family is considered well-off and does not lack money.

This situation was beyond Su Xueli's expectations. When she and Wei Mingshen made their plan, they believed that as long as she told her parents that he couldn't do it, her parents would immediately agree to her divorce.

After all, people in this era get married with the aim of continuing the family line. If the son-in-law is not good, the daughter will never be a mother, will grow old alone, and will be bullied and ridiculed for the rest of her life.

Su Xueli flatly refused: "No way, why should we treat him if he's sick? Besides, we might not even be able to cure him."

Liu Fengying's face hardened: "We'll talk about the incurable problem if it can't be cured. This is what your father told me to tell you. We can't just let you have your way. It's settled then. Don't say anything today. Go back with your son-in-law this afternoon, and we'll talk about treatment tomorrow."

With a pained expression, she advised her daughter, "My silly child, divorce is not child's play, it's not something you can just do on a whim. Even if you really can't live together and want to divorce, both families have to discuss it together, it's not up to you to decide."

Just then, someone outside called Liu Fengying to greet a guest. She told her daughter and went out.

Su Xueli sat there anxiously.

A little while later, Wei Mingshen came over to her and whispered, "Have you told your parents? Do they agree to our divorce?"

Su Xueli said irritably, "You're really in a hurry! Of course, I'm in a hurry too. But my parents don't agree."

Wei Mingshen's face darkened. "Didn't you tell them I'm not good enough?"

Su Xueli said, "I did tell them, but my parents said they'll pay for your medical treatment."
