Su Xueli wasn't saying this for her parents' benefit; she genuinely went to see Wei Mingshen.
Even if it wasn't on her way, she still wanted to visit him.
But she didn't tell Wei Mingshen that she wanted to give him a surprise.
She arrived in this bustling metropolis and, following the address in his letter, inquired her way to the suburbs where he lived.
Looking at the dilapidated guesthouse and thinking about his future status as a wealthy businessman in the city, she said: Life is just so wonderful!
But her timing was off; the landlord said that Wei Mingshen and the others had gone to the construction site and wouldn't be back until evening.
Su Xueli guessed it and asked the landlord where his construction site was.
The landlord said he didn't know. Su Xueli then asked if she could go in and help Wei Mingshen clean the room. The landlord said no, he didn't know her and couldn't just let her into the tenant's room, in case there were valuables in his room.
Su Xueli understood, so she said goodbye to the landlord, hailed a rickshaw, found a cheap hotel nearby to drop off her luggage, and then went shopping in the city.
She knew that Wei Mingshen was giving all the money he earned to her now, and that he was too busy working as a painter to take care of himself, so he probably didn't even have a decent set of clothes.
She bought Wei Mingshen a set of clothes, both inside and out, a pair of leather shoes, and some food. She shopped until dusk, then hurriedly took a taxi back to Wei Mingshen's place.
At this moment, Wei Mingshen and his renovation team had just returned from the construction site, all covered in lime paint, and were about to line up to take a shower.
Su Xueli stopped and called out, "Wei Mingshen!"
A group of people looked at her, including Wei Mingshen.
He stared at her for three seconds before he was sure he wasn't dreaming, and then his mud-covered face broke into a smile...
Wei Mingshen, dressed in a clean and tidy new outfit bought by Su Xueli, sat with her in the restaurant and talked at length about his experiences over the past six months.
Su Xueli listened attentively, her expression changing from time to time, showing tenderness, sorrow, joy, and love.
She finally spoke: "You've gotten darker and thinner. But you're even more attractive now."
Wei Mingshen's eyes suddenly lit up with a dazzling light, "Really?"
This time, Su Xueli did not hide her admiration and said, "It's true."
Wei Mingshen remained silent for a long time, his voice a little hoarse: "Finally, I've heard you tell the truth."
Su Xueli chuckled, "Narcissist."
He suddenly reached out and grabbed her hand, saying, "I missed you."
She bit her lip: in her past life, she had never heard him say those words.
"Sherry, what's wrong?" Wei Mingshen asked, looking at her reddened eyes.
Su Xueli no longer hid her feelings, letting the tears flow freely down her face. "Ming Shen, thank you."
Wei Mingshen got up and sat down next to her, wiping away her tears with his hand, and asked gently, "What are you saying? Why are you thanking me?"
Su Xueli held his hand and said with deep affection and a hint of grievance, "Thank you for finally keeping me in your heart."
The two hugged each other.
After finishing their meal, Wei Mingshen paid the bill, took her hand, and walked out of the restaurant, saying, "Come on, I'll show you around."
Su Xueli shook her head: "No, I don't want to go anywhere. I'm tired after running around all day and want to go back to the hotel to rest as soon as possible."
Actually, she felt sorry for Wei Mingshen, who was tired after a long day.
Wei Mingshen took it seriously and said, "Okay, then I'll take you back to your hotel."
"Um."
The two walked hand in hand toward the hotel.
