"Why does this look like a spy mission?" Jiang Huan couldn't help but laugh out loud.
“Xiaoying, I won’t force you. If you like it, we’ll have a big celebration and let everyone know. If you don’t like it, we can just get a marriage certificate. My parents’ situation is up to you. Here, take this.” Jiang Huan took the bag he was carrying.
As he spoke, he opened the book, which was filled with bankbooks and gold.
“These are all the money I’ve saved over the years. Later, when Jiang Jiang started her business, I gave her money, and she converted it all into shares for me. She even helped me buy some properties. When you go to Shanghai, I’ll transfer the property to you,” Jiang Huan said softly.
"Could you please stop calling me Xiaoying? It sounds so strange. What would I need your house for?" Tao Ying didn't even look at the bankbook.
"The betrothal gifts I give you are my everything." Jiang Huan looked at Tao Ying earnestly.
Tao Ying “…”
If a penniless person offers you everything, you might not be moved, but if a wealthy person offers you all their wealth, I believe no one would not be moved.
"No need, just give me 10,000 yuan as a bride price. From now on, give me your salary card, and you can keep the rest for yourself." Tao Ying pushed the bag back.
In 1983, a household with 10,000 yuan was equivalent to a million yuan in modern terms. Not to mention marrying an old lady, even a young girl wouldn't have such a high dowry.
Tao Ying doesn't care about the money, but she can't live without it.
Tao Ying didn't want any of Jiang Huan's assets either.
There's no need for that. When a relationship is just starting, it's the height of passion, so everything is naturally wonderful. But as time goes on and feelings fade, those feelings can become points of conflict.
“I don’t spend much money, and Jiang Jiang will give me a share, so I can buy you gifts.”
Jiang Huan panicked when he saw that Tao Ying refused to take his money.
Tang Xiao gave all his belongings to Jiang Jiang, so why can't he give them away to himself?
Or did Tao Ying not actually want to marry him?
"Let's go out and take a look. I haven't gone to say hello to Aunt Zhou yet," Jiang Huan said quickly when he saw that Tao Ying was about to refuse.
"Can we walk now? I'll carry you out," Jiang Huan added, trying to salvage the situation.
"Why would you need to hug me?" Tao Ying glared angrily at Jiang Huan.
"Then I'll help you." Jiang Huan smiled and took Tao Ying's shoes, then put a long down jacket on her.
"Where's the hat?" Jiang Huan looked around but couldn't see the hat.
"No need to wear a hat, we're not going outside. Let's go to the main room and chat for a while." Tao Ying put her arm around Jiang Huan's and slowly walked out.
"I'll carry you out."
Jiang Huan really wanted to put his hand on Tao Ying's waist.
"Comrade Jiang Huan, you're practically a grandfather now, are you sure this is a good idea?" Tao Ying looked at Jiang Huan with a teasing tone.
Jiang Huan "..."
"Xiaoying, after we get married, could you come stay with me for a few days regularly? It's not easy for me to move back these past few years." Jiang Huan looked at Tao Ying expectantly.
"Don't lower it any further. It's not good for your future development. I'll be gone for several days in a month by then," Tao Ying replied softly.
"Xiaoying, you're so kind." Jiang Huan grinned broadly, his face beaming with joy.
"Look, Uncle Jiang is grinning like an idiot." Wang Baoshan said angrily, looking at Jiang Huan's smiling face.
"If you have time, go clean the fish." Wang Chuntao couldn't stand Wang Baoshan's attitude.
They've already accepted Uncle Jiang, yet they're still bringing this up.
I didn't know this would be the most painful thing for my mother.
"My sister's pregnant, she can't stand the smell of fish." Wang Baoshan wasn't willing to move.
It's freezing cold; you have to go outside to clean the fish.
“My sister is four months pregnant and her morning sickness has long since stopped. You’re just lazy,” Wang Chuntao said angrily.
“So what if I’m lazy? I’m a mental worker,” Wang Baoshan said matter-of-factly.
"Sister Xue, you can clean up." Wang Chuntao ignored Wang Baoshan and handed the fish basin directly to Wang Yuexue.
"Me?" Wang Yuexue stared at Wang Chuntao in disbelief.
Am I capable of completing such a difficult task?
"They've even started plotting openly." Wang Baoshan said to Wang Chuntao through gritted teeth.
"What is that?" Wang Yuexue looked at the two of them blankly.
"It's alright, Sister Xue, sit here and chat with me." Wang Chuntao quietly handed Wang Yuexue a stool.
Wang Chuntao never even considered having Wang Yuexue clean the fish.
Yang Lin doesn't get a holiday during the Spring Festival either. Wang Chunni, Tao Chenyang, Zhou Daya, and Grandpa Wang are shelling peanuts, planning to make peanut tofu.
Li Guiying, Wang Chunli, and Wang Chuntao were preparing to fry something.
Wang Dashuan and Wang Baomin were kneading dough.
Wang Baohe was chopping wood.
"Aunt Zhou, Uncle Wang." Jiang Huan helped Tao Ying into the hall and greeted Grandpa Wang and Zhou Daya with a smile.
"Uncle Jiang," Wang Chunni quickly greeted.
"Hello, Grandpa." Tao Chenyang had been instructed by Wang Chuntao beforehand.
Tao Chenyang had never met Wang Dazhu, and he had no aversion to Jiang Huan whatsoever.
Shouting is effortless.
"Hey!" Jiang Huan's eyes lit up instantly. He pulled out a wad of cash from his pocket and stuffed it into Tao Chenyang's hand.
"Grandma!" Tao Chenyang was stunned and looked up at Tao Ying.
“Take it if I give it to you.” Tao Ying sat there.
"Xiao Jiang, come sit down." Zhou Daya found Jiang Huan more and more pleasing to the eye.
"Aunt Zhou, I'm going out to chop firewood with Baohe." Jiang Huan couldn't sit still.
“Baohe is happy to chop wood, so don’t worry about him,” Zhou Daya explained.
If Wang Bao hadn't been willing to chop wood, who would be so heartless as to make a thirteen-year-old chop wood when there are three strong men in the family?
"I've never celebrated the New Year like this before. I'm going out for a walk." Jiang Huan still couldn't sit still.
Tao Ying didn't say anything, and joined in peeling peanuts.
"Where will Jiang Huan stay tonight?" Zhou Daya asked Tao Ying.
Tao Ying, Wang Chunni, and Wang Chuntao live in the three main rooms, while Tao Chenyang lives with Wang Chuntao.
The two side rooms were where Wang Baomin and Wang Baoshan lived.
Wang Baohe lived with Wang Baoshan. The two back rooms were shared by Zhou Daya and Old Master Wang, and by Wang Chunli and Wang Yuexue.
Wang Dashuan and Li Guiying went back to their own home that night.
"Let Baohe go back to live here, and let Baomin and Baoshan live here. The house is still too small. We'll move to a bigger house tomorrow." Tao Ying sighed. It's really inconvenient to have so many people in the family and so few rooms.
“Why would we change places? There are only a lot of people around during the Spring Festival. When Baoshan goes to school, the second son’s family won’t be staying with us, so we’ll go to the second son’s place. Chunni won’t be coming back to stay either. Your whole courtyard will be so empty.” Zhou Daya disagreed.
“Chunni will be coming back to live here from now on. She’s quite far along in her pregnancy now, so it’s safer for her to stay at home. After she gives birth, she’ll need to stay here for postpartum care. Why don’t you come back to live with my dad? That way, we can keep an eye on her,” Tao Ying said softly to the two of them.
“Baomin doesn’t have a wife either, otherwise we could have arranged for him to be married off,” Tao Ying sighed.
