"Mom, sister-in-law." Seeing the two of them like this, Li Guiying became even more worried. She had already reached the door, but she turned back because she was still concerned.
"You little brat, go away." Tao Ying gave Li Guiying a threatening look.
"Wang Dashuan, why are you so slow?" Zhou Daya scolded Wang Dashuan fiercely.
"Guying, let's go." Wang Dashuan immediately pulled Li Guiying out.
Neither of these two in my family are people I can afford to offend.
"Da Shuan, I'm thirty-nine already," Li Guiying said softly.
“Even if you’re eighty, our sister-in-law says you’re still a child, so you have to be a child. What are you afraid of? Baomin and Baoshan are both at home,” Wang Dashuan reassured him.
“Mom, you can’t decide anything, why worry about it? Even if you burn the house down, my aunt can build you a new one,” Wang Chunli chimed in.
Li Guiying “…”
"Why did you bring the things your sister-in-law bought?" Li Guiying sighed, then exclaimed in surprise when she saw the pastries and wine on the mule cart.
“My grandma put it there. My grandpa kept a bottle and hid it. My grandma is using it to give you a facial,” Wang Chunli explained.
"It would be terrible if my sister-in-law found out." Li Guiying knew exactly what her mother-in-law was thinking.
“My aunt was watching when my grandma took it,” Wang Chunli said with a sigh.
I think my cautious personality must come from my mother.
Tao Ying felt a little uncomfortable watching Grandpa Wang and Grandma Wang pack up all the valuables.
"Mom, are you sure Wang Mei is your biological daughter?" Tao Ying asked tentatively.
"Take it away." Zhou Daya glared at Tao Ying, then turned and walked into the house with her hands behind her back.
"Chunni, why are you still taking Yangyang out?" Zhou Daya urged, seeing that Wang Chunni hadn't moved even after walking halfway.
"Grandma, I'm not afraid of what people will say," Wang Chunni said after a moment's hesitation.
Wang Chunni knew that her grandmother was trying to protect her; in fact, she had overheard what her second aunt and that person were saying that day.
Wang Chunni thought a lot. Her family was protecting her, and she was the only one who was too weak.
“It’s not about what people say or not, I’m afraid Yangyang will be bullied,” Zhou Daya sighed.
Wang Chunni “…”
"Great-Grandma, Yangyang is amazing!" Tao Chenyang raised her little face and called out to Zhou Daya with great determination.
“Mom, Yangyang is much better than Chunni. If it weren’t for Yangyang back in Kaoshantun, the grass on Chunni’s grave would be taller than Dazhu’s,” Tao Ying said from the side.
"Mom..." Wang Chunni called out to Tao Ying somewhat shyly.
"What mother? She's a complete idiot." Tao Ying didn't think she was wrong at all.
"Mom." Tao Chenyang took Wang Chunni's hand and looked at her with a smile.
The family was talking inside when, before eight o'clock, they heard several children outside shouting, "Grandma, Second Aunt!"
Tao Ying peered out the window and saw five or six children dressed like beggars rushing in as if they were fighting for relief food.
Before Tao Ying could even move, several children rushed in.
They kowtowed to Grandpa Wang and Zhou Daya as soon as they entered.
The younger girls were calling her "Second Aunt" and were about to kowtow to Tao Ying when the oldest girl stopped them.
There were six children in total, and they all shared the common characteristics of being thin, dirty, and wearing tattered clothes.
The oldest looked to be only twelve or thirteen, but he was actually fourteen. The second oldest was twelve, a boy, dressed relatively well and a bit chubby.
The third and fourth children are both ten years old and are twins, a boy and a girl. The fifth child is a girl, six years old, and the sixth child is a boy, three years old.
Tao Ying finally understood why the old lady said that all women are sins, and now that the policies are better, there is only one sin in a family.
So it's because of Wang Mei. If it weren't for the major policy, she probably would have had another child.
"Grandma, where's my second aunt? We're all hungry," Sun Zhaodi asked Zhou Daya.
"Dad, Mom, Happy New Year." Before Zhou Daya could speak, a dark-skinned, thin, middle-aged man with bloodshot eyes and wearing a tattered cotton-padded jacket walked in.
Behind the man followed a woman who was extremely thin, wearing a patched-up cotton-padded jacket with almost no cotton filling, and whose face was full of sorrow.
She's only 35, but she looks like she's 45.
"Mom, where is my second sister-in-law?" Sun Yaozu asked after looking around and not seeing Li Guiying.
Sun Yaozu didn't care about Zhou Daya's attitude at all. He had been married to Wang Mei for fifteen years, and that old lady had never given him a kind look.
Sun Yaozu wouldn't be able to come if his second sister-in-law hadn't prepared meat for him every year.
As for Tao Ying sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed), Sun Yaozu didn't even glance at her. Every year, his second sister-in-law would wait for his family in the courtyard, but this woman was sitting steadily next to the old lady; she didn't seem like someone who would welcome him.
"Sister-in-law, what brings you here?" Wang Mei looked closely for a long time before she dared to confirm that this was her sister-in-law.
The last time Wang Mei saw Tao Ying was when Wang Baoshan was born. After Wang Mei got married, Tao Ying never came back, so she hasn't seen her since.
Upon seeing Tao Ying again, especially with Tao Ying's inquisitive gaze, Wang Mei felt an urge to disappear into the ground.
"You still remember I'm your sister-in-law? I didn't see you burning paper money for your brother when he passed away?" Tao Ying glanced at the family casually.
Poverty can be forgiven, but dirtiness cannot.
Also, there was a bruise under Wang Mei's eye, which didn't look like she had bumped into it herself.
"Sister-in-law, the children are still young, I..." Wang Mei said, clutching the hem of her clothes, feeling somewhat guilty.
Actually, it was because Sun Yaozu didn't give Wang Mei the money to buy paper that Wang Mei couldn't go at all.
"They don't even give the child a bath during the New Year," Tao Ying sighed.
“Auntie, we’re hungry.” Twelve-year-old Sun Baogen said to Tao Ying in the same tone he always used when speaking to Li Guiying.
"If you're hungry, ask your mom. If that doesn't work, your dad's here. Why are you asking me?" Tao Ying rolled her eyes.
Sun Baogen stared blankly at Tao Ying, unable to react for a moment.
"Sister-in-law, is this how you act as an aunt?" Sun Yaozu said, somewhat angrily.
"That's really interesting. What, do you think I'm willing to be his aunt? He doesn't have to call me that. I don't care anyway." Tao Ying rolled her eyes, mimicking Zhou Daya.
“Sister-in-law, it’s okay if you look down on me…” Wang Mei looked at Tao Ying with red eyes.
I felt incredibly wronged, even my family looked down on me.
Do I want to live like this?
But what can you do if a man doesn't work properly?
She has many children, and her mother-in-law doesn't approve of her.
Everyone in my family is doing so well, but no one is willing to help my family.
"You know I look down on you, yet you still come jumping around in front of me. It's the New Year, and you're crying at someone else's house. How unlucky! Take your piss back!" Tao Ying started beating Wang Mei up before she could finish speaking.
