Chapter Forty-Three Years of Mourning

After discussing their options for a while, Tao Ying went to the kitchen. A little after 6:30 p.m., there was a knocking sound at the door.

"Wang Baomin, you son of a bitch, come out here!" Li Caixia's father shouted from outside.

“Wang Baomin, come out here! I know you’re home. You’ve got the guts to bully my daughter, but you can’t come out here!” Li Caixia’s mother chimed in from the side.

When Grandpa Wang heard the knocking, he picked up a large broom and was about to rush out.

"Dad, where are you going?" Tao Ying quickly called out to the old man.

"I'm going to beat them up." Old Master Wang's face was flushed with fighting spirit.

"Dad, we can't just fight. We have to argue first and make sure we're in the right. You and Mom can ambush him later, but just make sure you don't bump into anything. If you do, you'll lose your 50 cents." Tao Ying whispered, then gestured for Wang Baomin to open the door.

When Wang Baomin opened the door, he saw Li Caixia's fierce-looking parents, her younger brother, and Li Caixia herself, who was crying with tears streaming down her face.

And behind them, a crowd of neighbors had gathered to watch the spectacle.

"Oh my, who is this? Isn't this the Li family who sell their daughter to get a job and money for their son, and exchange it for a three-wheeled vehicle and a radio? What brings you here?" Tao Ying said in a sarcastic tone.

This was something they had planned together: Tao Ying couldn't curse properly, and Zhou Daya couldn't reason clearly.

"Bullshit! Who sold their daughter? Who sold their daughter? You son of a bitch..." Li Caixia's mother instantly lost her temper, pointing at Tao Ying and cursing. Her body was bulging with rage.

"Fuck you, you bastard...***!" Zhou Daya stepped out from behind Tao Ying and started cursing.

The more Zhou Daya and Li Caixia's mother argued, the closer they became.

Tao Ying followed behind Zhou Daya to prevent the old lady from losing her temper and neglecting her own strength.

The Li family members behind them also moved forward menacingly, while Wang Baomin and his group watched them warily.

Just an arm's length away from Zhou Daya and Li Caixia's mother, Li Caixia's mother felt her heart pounding from the scolding and raised her hand to grab Zhou Daya's hair.

Tao Ying had been waiting for this moment. She rushed out, grabbed Li Caixia's mother's hair, and then started stroking her face.

"My eyes!!" Li Caixia's mother screamed.

Wang Baomin also stopped the father and his two sons, while the old man Wang ambushed Wang Baomin from behind with a broom.

Wang Chunli and Wang Chuntao exchanged a glance and then headed towards Li Caixia.

Li Caixia never expected that she would be involved, and before she knew it, Wang Chunli grabbed her hair and pulled her down.

Before she could even touch Wang Chunli while struggling, Wang Chuntao plopped down on Li Caixia, first taking off Li Caixia's little leather shoes and throwing them into the crowd of onlookers.

Then she pulled down the sleeves of the skirt.

The battle on Tao Ying's side was the most brutal. Zhou Daya told Tao Ying to beat Li Caixia's mother until she screamed in pain. Suddenly, she felt that she was capable and wanted to learn from Wang Chuntao and sit on Li Caixia's mother to beat her.

Tao Ying almost kicked Li Caixia's mother away, and quickly covered Li Caixia's mother's eyes with her right hand.

Li Caixia's mother immediately screamed.

The commotion was so loud that the community director arrived with his men shortly afterward.

When Wang Chunli caught sight of the community director arriving, she immediately pulled Wang Chuntao away from Li Caixia.

"Mom, Mom, are you alright? You can't scare me like that!" Tao Ying let go of Li Caixia's mother's hair and hugged Zhou Daya, who was sitting next to her secretly pinching Li Caixia's mother.

Zhou Daya pinched her one last time hard, then rolled her eyes and lay down in Tao Ying's arms.

"I don't want to live anymore! They've bullied me right here at my doorstep! I'm going to call the police!" Tao Ying cried miserably while hugging Zhou Daya.

"What's going on?" The community director frowned deeply.

"Director, you have to help us! Our family can't afford a job for her son, nor can we afford an 800 yuan dowry, let alone the 'three turns and one ring' (referring to a set of three watches and a watch). We can't afford this marriage; it's like bandits coming to our door!" Tao Ying cried.

"Is that so?" The community director looked at Li Caixia's father.

“If a family doesn’t ask for a bride price, then that family will give their daughter to your family,” Li Caixia’s father said matter-of-factly.

“Why didn’t you make things clear before you started dating? When you started dating, you clearly said that you would give my mother’s job to Li Caixia, give her a dowry of 500 yuan, and bring her back a three-wheeled train and a radio. You didn’t say that you would give the job to your son.” Wang Baomin said to Li Caixia’s father.

“We dated for six months, and I spent over a hundred yuan of my entire monthly salary on Li Caixia. It was Li Caixia who suggested ending the relationship, and I agreed. So why are you all coming to make trouble?” Li Baomin questioned the Li family.

“My precious daughter has been with you for over half a year, how much of a bargain have you gotten?” Li Caixia’s father said, still unwilling to give up.

"Heaven and earth bear witness, every time I went out with Li Caixia, it was because she came to find me, and then we went to state-run restaurants and state-run stores. You can go to the police station and report me." Wang Baomin had completely given up.

“The bride price is something we have to negotiate,” said Li Caixia’s mother, her eyes red.

"No need to say anything. My father just passed away, and I have to observe three years of mourning for him. I also need to save my salary to support my younger brother and sister's schooling, so I won't interfere with your two daughters' studies." Wang Baomin refused directly.

"Do you want to resolve this peacefully, or do you want to report it to the police?" The community director was also reluctant to get involved.

The current crackdown has left community directors overwhelmed.

"Let's report it to the police and let them judge the matter. We can also get back the money Baomin spent over the past six months," Zhou Daya said weakly, lying in Tao Ying's arms.

"I'm going to call the police! Call the police! Look how angry you've made my mother-in-law!" Tao Ying shouted angrily at Li Caixia's family.

“From now on, the two families will never have any contact again.” Li Caixia’s father looked at Wang Baomin with a face full of resentment.

They were also afraid that if the old lady died, she would become a burden on their family.

"Waaah... my shoes, my clothes..." Li Caixia felt even more upset upon hearing this.

"You piece of trash." Li Caixia's father was furious. With a gloomy face, he raised his hand and slapped Li Caixia, then turned and left.

Li Caixia covered her face and looked at Wang Baomin for help, only to find that Wang Baomin didn't even glance at her.

My heart instantly turned ice-cold. I covered my face and followed the group barefoot back.

"Sigh, a young lady at my workplace even said she wanted to go on a blind date with Baomin, but it seems like it's not meant to be," Tao Ying said with a sigh as she helped Zhou Daya home with Wang Baomin.

"What are the conditions?" Zhou Daya immediately perked up after entering the room.

“It was all just a pipe dream. The girl’s family is very well-off, far beyond our reach. She was tired of the blind dates her family arranged for her and wanted me as her mother-in-law, so she suggested that she go on a blind date with Baomin,” Tao Ying said proudly.
