Chapter 27 A family of misers

There are not many households growing pears in Lijiazhuang, and they were harvested yesterday. It would be a waste of time to go there again.

Xue Guixiang thought for a moment and said, "There aren't any in our village, but more than half of the families in your uncle's village plant pear trees."

"Mom, please take me to my uncle's village after dinner. I want to pick pears."

"Okay." Xue Guixiang agreed readily.

Xue Guixiang was quick and agile and quickly packed up the pots and pans. The two of them pushed the cart and set off.

When they passed Gou Sheng's house, Liu Cuiling spat fiercely at their backs: "Bah! A whole family of misers!"

Xue Guixiang's parents' home is in Xiaoma Village, about ten miles away from Zhoujiazhuang, and it takes at least an hour to walk there.

On the way, they passed by the town supply and marketing cooperative, and Lin Qingqing insisted on going in to buy some things for her uncle's family.

When Xue Guixiang went out, she brought some cooked peanuts from home and asked her daughter-in-law not to spend money. However, Lin Qingqing said that it was her first time going to her uncle's house, and she and Zhou Zhuo should buy something to show their filial piety.

"Mom didn't bring the ticket." Xue Guixiang felt a little embarrassed. You need a ticket to buy anything now. You can't buy anything without a ticket even if you have money.

"Don't worry, I have a solution."

Xue Guixiang took out five yuan from her pocket and stuffed it into her hand: "This is the money I returned as a gift last time. Use it to buy something for your uncle."

Lin Qingqing smiled and stuffed the money back: "You keep this money for pocket money, I will spend my own money."

Xue Guixiang increasingly felt that her daughter-in-law was a good person, of course not because of her money, but because her daughter-in-law was sensible.

Lin Qingqing entered the supply and marketing cooperative. There was a male salesperson wearing a liberation cap who was fiddling with an abacus. When he saw someone come in, he just raised his eyelids.

Buy it or not, they don’t need you as a customer anyway. Even if they don’t sell anything, they will still get a salary of 24 yuan at the end of the month!

Lin Qingqing asked the salesperson if there were any cigarettes and cakes that didn't require a ticket. She had heard that people in the supply and marketing cooperative would often use their positions to stock up on scarce supplies and sell them privately to make money.

Upon hearing this, the salesperson's attitude changed immediately. He stopped fiddling with the abacus and asked in a low voice, "We don't have any cakes, but we have four boxes of cigarettes and two bars of soap. Do you want any?"

"want!"

"Okay, wait a minute." The salesperson said and turned to go out through the inner door.

There was a small warehouse in the supply and marketing cooperative, where he usually hid the things he had collected.

After a while he came out with a cigarette and two bars of soap in his hand.

"Cigarettes are one dollar a box, and soap is seventy cents a piece."

The normal price at Daqianmen is 35 cents, and White Cat soap is 36 cents, but Lin Qingqing doesn't have a ticket. Even if she did, she wouldn't be able to buy such popular cigarettes.

She paid for it without hesitation. She didn't think it was expensive, but felt very lucky instead!

After buying the things, the family of three continued on their journey.

Because they were so anxious, sweat broke out on the tip of their noses. But when they arrived at their uncle's house, their uncle and aunt had not yet gotten up!

Instead, all three children got up. The eldest boy, Xue Dong, squatted in the kitchen to cook for his two younger sisters, Xue Nan and Xue Rong. After all, he was only a twelve-year-old boy, and he was clumsy and choked by the smoke and burst into tears.

"Aunt, why are you here? And Brother Zhou Zhuo and sister-in-law, you are all here."

The children also attended the wedding, so he recognized Lin Qingqing and knew to call her sister-in-law.

"Where are your parents?" Xue Guixiang asked.

"They haven't woken up yet. Aunt, please wait, I'll go call them." A blush appeared on Xue Dong's face. The sun was shining on his buttocks, but his parents hadn't woken up yet. He felt like a laughing stock to his new sister-in-law.

Xue Guibao and Sun Junqiao both slept in bed. The house was as dirty as a pigsty, and the dried rat droppings on the floor were not even swept.
