Chapter 36: Rice for a Cart

Lin Qingqing said she was cooking at home and asked Xue Guixiang to go to Ruihong's house to deliver rice. She also filled a basket with more than ten ripe pears for her.

Xue Guixiang carried rice and a basket to Ruihong's house. Gousheng's mother saw her delivering pears to Ruihong's house through the crack of the door and was so angry that her lungs were about to explode.

Gousheng cried so hard that day but still didn’t get a pear to eat, so why should Ruihong’s family be able to eat one!

Ruihong's family was eating around a small table on the kang. Ruihong's husband was honest and willing to endure hardships. Although their life was not rich, they could definitely make ends meet.

His family eats better than Zhou's. They also cook cornmeal porridge, but the staple food is big white steamed buns, and the dishes are a bit oily.

Seeing Xue Guixiang coming, Ruihong hurriedly stood up: "Auntie, why are you here? Sit down and have something to eat!"

Xue Guixiang put the rice and pears on the ground: "Ruihong, this is a gift from my daughter-in-law to your family."

Ruihong saw the rice and said hurriedly, "Auntie, what are you doing?"

"Don't be anxious. Listen to me first. These pears are not worth much money. I give them to the children to try. This rice..." Xue Guixiang was a little embarrassed to say it.

"Aunt, just tell me what you want to say."

"Well, I borrowed your cart. Now that you've got a new ox cart, I figured I'd no longer need it. So I'd like to trade this rice for your cart. What do you think?"

It turned out that he wanted to change the car.

Ruihong is a smart person. She knows that rice is a scarce commodity. If she doesn't use a ticket, the rice will cost at least 50 cents per pound. This bag of rice is worth at least ten yuan.

Her rickshaw had been used for many years and was very old. It was worthless. She had wanted to throw it away as junk before. She definitely made a fortune in this deal.

But she wasn't greedy: "Aunt, you're being polite. It's just a cart. I'm giving it to your family for free. Why are you carrying so much rice? It's not easy for your family. I can't take this rice. Take it away."

"Let's be clear, I can't take your car for free. This is what my daughter-in-law wanted. She said that using your car would cause inconvenience to your family, so she's giving you some rice as an apology."

Ruihong immediately understood that Lin Qingqing didn't want to owe her a favor. A smart person doesn't need to say much. If she refused to accept the rice, Lin Qingqing would probably always think about it.

Everyone in the village said that Lin Qingqing had a bad character, but she didn't think so. How could someone who had such a stupid mind to do that with an old widower be so clear-headed?

"Okay, then I won't be polite to you, Auntie. This old cart is worthless. I'm just indebted to your family. Please thank Qingqing for me."

"Okay, aunt is leaving."

Xue Guixiang completed the task assigned by her daughter-in-law and returned home happily.

There was a fragrant smell of rice in the house. She saw her son Zhou Zhuo making a fire and her daughter-in-law cutting pickled cabbage.

Life was so good. It would be even better if Zhou Yuan was more sensible. Thinking of Zhou Yuan, she felt uncomfortable.

This damn girl hasn't come back for several days, and she doesn't want to go look for her, for fear that if she does, she'll cause trouble for Lin Qingqing again. She thinks Zhou Yuan has a childish temper, and once she figures it out after a few days, everything will be fine.

The Lin family...

Lin Yuzhu and Lin Caizhu both have families of four, plus old lady Lin and Lin Qingqing's father Lin Tiezhu, there are a total of ten people in the family.

Tian Cui'e was lighting a fire and steam was bubbling in the pot. There was no good food for too many people, and the Lin family was poor, so it was good enough to have enough to eat.

Lin Daqiang, the son of Lin Qingqing's second uncle Lin Yuzhu, stirred the thin soup in the pot with a spoon, and suddenly threw the bowl aside in annoyance.

My friends, happy New Year’s Eve!
