Chapter Seven

Xu Kang, being an experienced man, stared intently at him with his eagle-like eyes, "Those two classmates of yours just now?"

He knew his son well; he had never asked him for a single penny. Studying abroad required a lot of money, and the money he earned from part-time work was just enough for his living expenses. Where did he get so much money? It must have been someone else who paid the majority of it.

However, those two are his son's classmates, so the money was probably provided by his parents. Starting a company requires a lot of money, unless the family is very wealthy.

What are the backgrounds of your two classmates?

Xu Yujie glanced at his father, who indeed had keen insight. He walked over and whispered something in Xu Kang's ear.

Xu Kang remained silent for a long time before finally settling on them, saying, "Take good care of them this time, and don't neglect them."

Early in the morning, Xu Yujie led Shi Chuying and Chen Ningsheng out. As the host, Xu Yujie skillfully led the two to visit the nearby attractions. Qingyuan is a small town in the south, and the attractions are typical of the Jiangnan region with its small bridges and flowing water.

Qingyuan Town is not big; it only takes an hour or so to walk from the south to the north of the town. After wandering through the streets and alleys, they bought a lot of Jiangnan specialty pastries and snacks. The three tall men standing on the road attracted a lot of attention. Some people recognized Xu Yujie and stopped to greet him warmly.

"How about it? Aren't our fellow villagers simple, honest, and warm-hearted?"

Chen Ningsheng's lips curled into a wicked smile. "The ones who are enthusiastic are all girls. Xu Yujie, you might not have that kind of luck with women abroad, but you certainly do have plenty in China."

Xu Yujie disagreed with this and bumped into Shi Chuying. The two exchanged glances. "Asheng, those girls who stopped to say hello just now all had ulterior motives. Their eyes were practically glued to you. Want me to introduce you to a few?"

Chen Ningsheng scoffed.

"Take a look," Shi Chuying said hurriedly, alerting the two as she looked at the scene before her.

The two looked in that direction and saw a man pressing a woman against the wall and kissing her in the corner behind an abandoned house.

“Tsk tsk,” Shi Chuying laughed, “Ah Jie, your local customs are indeed a bit too open.”

Seeing Xu Yujie staring intently without speaking, he asked, "What, do you know him?"

Xu Yujie looked at the familiar figure not far away. Although it had been several years since they last met, they had grown up together and it was not difficult for him to recognize the person.

Xu Yujie didn't hide anything, "Yes, we grew up together."

Chen Ningsheng glanced at him and said, "Your brother is pretty tough."

Xu Yujie felt quite embarrassed. If he wasn't mistaken, the girl must be Lu Shuangshuang, who was about to marry him. Although they were about to get married, doing something like this was still quite outrageous in this day and age.

Now that they recognized each other, it wasn't the right time to say hello, and the group was preparing to leave.

Two women passed by, one of them staring at the two people and spitting, "That Chen family son is too shameless. He's involved with two young girls from the Lu family. The eldest daughter of the Lu family is so pitiful. She even tried to jump into the river. Luckily, she was saved."

"Stop talking! The two of them often do these things behind each other's backs. Even Wang Po, who has poor eyesight, has seen it several times. It's immoral and scandalous. They should have..."

They got involved, keeping the eldest daughter of the Lu family completely in the dark...

The sound was quite loud; all three of them heard it.

After a moment of silence, Xu Yujie suddenly turned a corner and said, "I'm going to visit Uncle Lu."

Xu Xinchen was exhausted today. Although she had no classes during the holidays, a little tyrant came to her house. He was Zhao Lanzhi's nephew, who came all the way from the city to play during his summer vacation. However, Zhao Lanzhi only knew how to play cards every day and had no time to take care of this little devil. Lu Shuangshuang was also nowhere to be seen all day and no one knew where she had gone.

Xu Xinchen, who stayed at home, was the only one who suffered. She had to be a slave to her little darling. Just when she finally managed to coax her little darling to sleep, she heard someone coming from outside the door.

As soon as Xu Xinchen stepped out of her house, she saw three tall, burly men standing at the door, which was quite eye-catching.

She was quite surprised, but she didn't show it on her face and calmly walked up to them.

Xu Yujie looked at her, scratched his head, seemingly a little embarrassed, and asked, "Is Uncle Lu home? I've come to pay a visit."

“He went to the county for training and won’t be back for a while.”

"Oh..." Xu Yujie was anxiously thinking of an excuse when he heard the woman in front of him suddenly speak.

"Come inside and have a cup of tea."

Xu Xinchen smiled slightly and led the group into the house.

Her room was quite simple, with a girl's pink bed taking up most of the space, and an old wooden table covered with books.

While Xu Xinchen was making tea, the group wandered around the room. Chen Ningsheng pulled a book out of his desk and examined it closely.

As soon as Xu Xinchen entered the room, she saw this scene and felt a little embarrassed. She walked to the small tea table, put down the tea, and poured tea for them.

Xu Yujie also walked to the desk and saw the book Chen Ningsheng was holding, Tagore's Stray Birds. She asked in surprise, "Min Shi, do you usually read these kinds of books?"

Xu Xinchen lowered her head, a strand of hair slipping down her cheek. She tucked it behind her ear, completely unaware of the allure of the gesture, and smiled, "I was just looking around."

A soft laugh was heard.

Xu Xinchen looked up at Chen Ningsheng, whose lips were slightly curved in a smile. She had no idea what he was laughing about.

"Alright." Xu Yujie took the book from Chen Ningsheng's hands, put it back in its place, and joked, "You, a finance whiz from Columbia University, actually like reading this cheesy lovey-dovey stuff?"

"The painting is quite beautiful."

Chen Ningsheng walked up to her and sat down on the edge of the bed.

"Painting? What painting?" Xu Yujie was completely baffled.

Xu Xinchen blushed with embarrassment. She had been bored lately and thought about cultivating a hobby by copying paintings every day. However, this hobby was not something that could be mastered overnight. She had never learned this kind of thing in her previous life and could not grasp the method in a short time. Her paintings were terrible... It was probably because she had casually tucked her paintings into a book and he had seen them.

Another low laugh reached her ears. Xu Xinchen felt embarrassed and annoyed. She raised her face and glared at Chen Ningsheng.

Chen Ningsheng was stunned, his smile froze on his face, and he turned his head away to touch his nose.

Xu Yujie was a very outgoing person. After only a few words, he started reminiscing with Xu Xinchen about the past. However, Xu Xinchen was not the same Lu Minshi who grew up with him, and could only give a perfunctory reply.

At this moment, Shi Chuying, who hadn't said much since entering, suddenly spoke up, "Miss Lu, why are you working in a restaurant in the county town?"

Upon hearing this, three pairs of eyes turned to her.

Xu Xinchen picked up her teacup and took a sip, the teacup obscuring most of her face. Her voice came through, "I did it to experience life."

No one should believe this, but no one pressed him for details. Xu Yujie suddenly remembered what the two women had said and tentatively asked, "Min Shi, I remember your sister is getting married in the next few days."

After saying that, he stared intently at her face, carefully observing her expression.

But there wasn't a trace of sadness on her face. Xu Xinchen slowly said, "Yes, the day is coming soon. You can still make it to the wedding if you come."

Her nonchalant attitude confused Xu Yujie. Did she not like Chen Baifei at all? Recalling what her father had said yesterday, Xu Yujie suddenly felt a surge of excitement and blurted out, "Min Shi, when do you plan to get married?"

As soon as the words left his mouth, Xu Yujie regretted it. The question had been rather abrupt, and all three of them looked at him in surprise.

He quickly added, "I was just asking casually, don't take it to heart."

Xu Xinchen held her teacup and smiled nonchalantly, "It's okay, I haven't planned on it yet."

"Oh, really?"

Xu Yujie's smile faded, and he changed the subject again.

They were all young people and quickly became friends. In the warm room, Xu Yujie's usually refined face broke into a big smile. "Min Shi, do you think Asheng is stupid? He bought houses with all the money he earned, and he bought several of them. There's no profit to be made in the housing market right now. He should have invested that money in something else."
