Chapter Forty-Eight

While Xu Xinchen was lost in thought, a car with its lights flashing and its horn beeping clearly reached her ears in front of the convenience store not far away. Xu Xinchen looked at the car and thought it looked like a taxi. It was parked there. Xu Xinchen wanted to see if it was empty, so she rushed into the rain.

The rain was heavier and more intense than she had expected, and in an instant she was soaked to the bone. Her bangs were plastered to her forehead, and droplets of water slid down her cheeks. Xu Xinchen looked disheveled, but she couldn't care less. Just as she was about to reach the taxi, a woman suddenly appeared out of nowhere and slipped into the taxi.

Xu Xinchen walked over, and the driver, sitting in the driver's seat, looked at her helplessly. "Miss, I've been waiting for you, but you're too slow. It's hard to get a taxi now. Why don't you share a ride with her?"

Xu Xinchen didn't care, but the woman in the passenger seat was not having it. She tapped the steering wheel impatiently, "What's the point of competing?" She turned around and glanced at Xu Xinchen through the window, giving a cold snort without any mercy, "Whoever gets in this car owns it. There are no rules."

There was a moment of silence, and the driver looked at the two of them with a troubled expression.

Seeing that the driver wasn't leaving, the woman impatiently took out cash from her bag, sneered, and said, "I'll pay you double. Hurry up and go, don't delay me. I'm in a hurry."

The young man's expression changed visibly as he looked at the money. He then glanced at the disheveled Xu Xinchen outside the window, hesitating before speaking, "Miss..."

A car drove up behind us, making a loud honking sound.

His eyes lit up. "Miss, there are more cars behind us. Why don't you go and see if there are any available?"

Before he could finish speaking, the car sped away, brushing past Xu Xinchen, splashing water all over her legs, adding to her disheveled state.

The black car behind her slowly came to a stop beside her.

The car window rolled down, revealing a sharply defined profile, a high nose bridge, thin, tightly pursed lips, and a pair of unfriendly eyes that turned to look at her.

Gu Yan looked at the disheveled woman in the rain, his eyes flashing with a cold light, and laughed angrily, "You'd rather go back soaking wet than ride in my car?"

Xu Xinchen couldn't answer him. She sensed the anger hidden beneath his sharp brows and didn't know what to do.

With a click, the car door opened.

Gu Yan's face tensed, his hands gripping the steering wheel, his eyes fixed ahead, and he remained silent.

The atmosphere remained tense.

Xu Xinchen walked over, opened the car door, and sat in the back seat. As soon as she settled in, darkness enveloped her as a large towel was placed over her head. His cold voice reached her ears, "Clean yourself up."

Xu Xinchen dried her hair and then wiped her face. Her other clothes were still wet and stuck to her body, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.

Gu Yan rested his hands on the steering wheel, raised his eyes slightly, and glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Lu Minshi".

Xu Xinchen looked up and met his gaze in the rearview mirror.

"If you don't want to see me, you can resign."

"I don't...."

She didn't know why he said that, and was a little confused. She tried her best to explain, "I didn't mean I didn't want to see you."

"Then why have you been avoiding me these past few days?"

The car glided smoothly out of the car, and he turned the steering wheel and drove onto the overpass.

"I..." Xu Xinchen hesitated, finding it difficult to speak.

Gu Yan looked out the window casually, "Are you bothered by my confession the other day?"

Xu Xinchen's heart skipped a beat.

She stared at him, dumbfounded, never expecting him to say it so directly.

He caught a glimpse of her gaze in the rearview mirror out of the corner of his eye and couldn't help but chuckle.

"You look at me like I'm a monster in troubled waters."

"If I had known you would be this scared, I wouldn't have made that decision that day."

He admired her flustered expression for a while, then decided to stop teasing her and said seriously.

“Lu Minshi, remember this: work is work. Never mix your personal feelings with your work.”

These words jolted her awake like a thunderbolt. She suddenly realized how bad her condition had been these past few days, and that as a company employee, she had indeed been irrational.

My heart was filled with shame, and I dared not look at his expression even more.

The car was parked in front of the house. The rain had stopped, and sunlight was peeking through the clouds, bringing a sliver of light to the earth.

After the rain, water droplets clung to the treetops, creating a refreshing and beautiful scene, while birds perched on the branches, chirping merrily.

Only the windshield wipers were still swaying back and forth.

Xu Xinchen remained silent, unsure of what to say to ease the tension, when the man in front of her suddenly turned around.

Those dark eyes shone even brighter, staring at her intently.

"Lu Minshi, you are a capable employee. Remember my words: in the company, we will always be in a superior-subordinate relationship."

His voice was steady and deep.

His gaze shifted to her full, rosy lips, and suddenly his throat bobbed.

Before Xu Xinchen could even process the meaning of his words, she felt a warmth on her ear and realized that he had somehow moved so close to her face, his lips almost touching her earlobe.

"However, in private life."

His breath was hot, bringing a ticklish sensation.

"Bailing is having her engagement party this weekend. You'll come with me. That day, you'll give me your answer. I don't want to wait that long anymore."

Her heart was stirred, unsure whether it was because of Chen Bailing's engagement or the answer he demanded. Her mind was in turmoil, and her face showed confusion.

Gu Yan sat back down, rested his hands on the back of the seat, and admired her helpless expression for a while. He then smiled slightly and opened the car door with a click.

"Think about it carefully."

He smiled as he watched her get out of the car, looking completely distracted, then stepped on the gas and drove off.

Over the weekend, Xu Xinchen accompanied Gu Yan to the hotel where their engagement was to take place. The engagement was decorated in a typical Chinese style, with decorations everywhere...

It was filled with joy and celebration.

Xu Xinchen had never known how to face all of this, but when she actually arrived here, it was as if all the grudges and resentments had vanished, leaving only a faint bitterness and regret.

If only... would they have ended up like this?

Especially when Chen Ningsheng and Chen Bailing walked out hand in hand, and the people around them congratulated them, her feelings became even more complicated.

Gu Yan whispered in her ear, "They're a perfect match, aren't they?"

Xu Xinchen nodded perfunctorily. Not far away, the newlyweds were receiving congratulations. She looked at the smile on his face and wondered if it was genuine or not.

Suddenly, his gaze unexpectedly turned towards them, and Xu Xinchen, unable to dodge, met his gaze in mid-air.

Without pausing, his gaze swept over.

When the final step, exchanging rings, was completed, Xu Xinchen knew that everything had come to an end.

"You should give me an answer now." Gu Yan looked at her with a smile, his expression gentle, but she knew his certainty.

"I'm going to the restroom."

She avoided his gaze and went to the restroom in the hallway.

The icy water splashed onto her face, stimulating her to become more alert.

The noisy sounds coming from next door made her suddenly not want to go back at all.

She finished getting ready and was about to leave when she faintly heard a sound coming from next door.

"Where did Asheng go? Have you seen him?"

It was Chen Bailing's voice. Although she had deliberately lowered her voice, she could still recognize it.

"No, don't be so anxious. Where could he go? They're already engaged. Do you think he'd lose her?"

Another girl chimed in.

"No," Chen Bailing interrupted, her voice hesitant and stammering, "The medicine you gave me... I just... put it in his water glass, and he took it."
