Erniu's father wanted to follow them, but found the door locked. He angrily pounded on the door, and the two started arguing and cursing through the door.
Fang Erniu stuffed some cotton into her ears and forced herself to sleep.
She's been under immense stress these past few days. She's heartbroken because her marriage to Su Laosan fell through, her family has been plagued by misfortunes, and she's been walking so long into the night. She hasn't had a good night's sleep at all.
After talking things out with Su Laosan today, she felt hopeful again and fell asleep quickly despite the noise.
The next day, I got up before dawn and took a bus to the city. By the time I arrived in the city, it was already daylight.
