"What did you call me? Didn't you become my godmother?"
"Godmother." Qin Xiaoyu called out without hesitation. The old lady Wang in front of her was thin and small, and she really felt sorry for her.
Listening to the dripping sound of the leaking rain in the house, she was already thinking about asking Captain Chen to help repair the house when the weather cleared up.
"Don't be afraid, your godmother is here to protect you, no one dares to touch you!" Aunt Wang grabbed Qin Xiaoyu with her withered hand and pulled her to her side.
Qin Xiaoyu felt a warmth spread through her body, and suddenly the room became brighter.
The rain was pouring down outside. Aunt Wang offered Qin Xiaoyu a place to stay, but she was worried about her two children at home, so she braved the rain and rushed back.
My younger sister was already asleep, her face still streaked with tears. Hanhan sat at the table, writing characters stroke by stroke.
"Son, stop writing and go to sleep early." Qin Xiaoyu felt guilty when she saw Hanhan's obedient appearance.
"Mom, drink some hot water, or you'll catch a cold." Hanhan ran to get the thermos.
"Mom, do it yourself, don't burn yourself." Qin Xiaoyu took a sip of hot water and then realized that her stomach was even emptier. She hadn't eaten anything all day except for that one bite of yellow peach.
"Son, are you hungry too?" Qin Xiaoyu then remembered that Hanhan and her younger sister had only eaten a simple snack.
Hanhan nodded.
"Okay, Mom will make you something delicious!"
Qin Xiaoyu felt a little relieved after hearing from Aunt Wang that Qi Si was alright for the time being. It seemed that things weren't completely hopeless. Perhaps after some time, Bai Weiwei would stop bothering with her, and everything would return to normal.
Even if the school is gone, she can work in other industries. Having had a successful experience, she feels that nothing is a problem.
She rummaged through the food in the refrigerator and found there was no staple food. None of the three of them liked noodles, but how to steam rice became a problem. Although they had a gas stove, steaming rice with that was a skill, and it was very likely to be undercooked or burnt.
"Mom, look what this is?" Hanhan pointed to the cardboard box under the refrigerator.
"This is a rice cooker! Where did it come from?" Qin Xiaoyu discovered something amazing—it was an imported rice cooker!
"Uncle Wang brought it." Hanhan was very capable; nothing in the family could be hidden from him.
"What a lifesaver!" Qin Xiaoyu took the rice cooker out of the box and couldn't help but kiss it twice, which made Hanhan giggle. The little sister was startled awake, rubbed her eyes, sat up, and stared blankly at them.
So much has happened these past few days, and Qin Xiaoyu hasn't seen Hanhan smile at all. Seeing him smile makes Qin Xiaoyu feel like all the clouds in the sky have dispersed, that she and her son are alright, and that everything is fine.
She glanced at the things on the table, and a brilliant idea struck her: she would make a dish that's popular on TikTok.
She opened a can of broad beans and cut two Cantonese sausages. Hanhan had already peeled the carrots and potatoes, and her younger sister helped wash two cherry tomatoes.
Qin Xiaoyu rinsed the rice, put the ingredients in, added water, and closed the lid. The mother and her two children stared at the rice cooker, waiting for a miracle to happen.
Finally, she heard a "snap" sound, and the button popped up. Qin Xiaoyu lifted the lid of the pot. Success! The whole house smelled delicious.
The three of them ate a hearty meal, and their mood improved. They played around on the bed for a while before finally lying down.
"Mother."
"Um?"
When will Uncle Zhou be back?
"have no idea."
Qin Xiaoyu's heart sank even lower.
Zhou Xing, where are you?
For three days in a row, Qin Xiaoyu stayed at home. Tang Wenwen was right; they shouldn't alert Bai Weiwei or do anything to provoke her. They should let her calm down first.
On the third day, she started to get impatient. First, she had run out of vegetables at home, and second, she was feeling restless because she hadn't heard a word from them.
That night, the work clothes she wore to Aunt Wang's house were splattered with a lot of mud. After washing them, they were still not completely dry, so she could only find the most inconspicuous piece of clothing among her usual clothes.
This is a navy blue heavy silk dress. The style is very simple and without any decorations, making the wearer look a bit mature.
She let her hair down and styled it into the most common hairstyle on the street, trying to blend into the crowd and not stand out.
The grocery store was packed with people at that time, so there wasn't much time to look around. Everyone was rushing to work and didn't want to meddle in other people's business.
Qin Xiaoyu was sweating profusely as she finally bought everything and slowly walked home carrying it in her hands.
"Little Fish Girl?"
"Section Chief Bai!"
Qin Xiaoyu looked up in surprise and met Section Chief Bai's burning gaze.
"Why is Little Fish Girl here? What's with the title 'Section Chief Bai'? Didn't I tell you to call me Brother Bai?"
"Heh, Brother Bai." Qin Xiaoyu quickly organized her thoughts, thinking that she should be able to get some inside information from Section Chief Bai.
You've moved here?
"Yes, my brother found this place. By the way, do you have any news about my brother?"
"I actually went to see him..."
How is he?
"It's not convenient to talk here, with people coming and going. My home is in the building across the street. Shall we go upstairs to chat?"
"Let's go to my house instead, it's just ahead." Qin Xiaoyu really didn't dare to go with Section Chief Bai. Firstly, she was worried about something happening between a man and a woman alone together, and secondly, she was also worried about leaving her two children at home for too long.
"Okay, then let's go to your house." Section Chief Bai readily accepted the vegetable basket from Qin Xiaoyu's hand.
The two entered the building one after the other. Hanhan and her younger sister were a little nervous when they saw strangers.
"Go take your little sister inside to play. Mom and Uncle have something to talk about." Qin Xiaoyu gave them some food, sent them inside, and closed the door behind her.
"You've done a great job tidying up this house." Section Chief Bai didn't sit down immediately, but instead walked around from the living room to the kitchen.
"Let's just deal with it. What about my brother's situation?"
"His affairs are complicated. Now it's not just the law enforcement that's dealing with him; he has too many enemies. I always said to avoid offending people. Just the fact that he was hiding a gun is a serious crime..." Chief Bai's voice was a bit loud. Qin Xiaoyu nervously glanced into the inner room. Although the door was closed, both children were very sensitive, and it was best not to let them know certain things.
"Come here, girl, let me have a good talk with you. There are some things you need to know." Section Chief Bai gestured towards the north-facing balcony.
The north-facing balcony wasn't large, and it was filled with the previous owner's belongings. It was so big that it would be full if two people stood inside. Qin Xiaoyu regretted going in as soon as she entered and wanted to leave, but Section Chief Bai blocked her way, making her feel a little awkward.
"Brother Bai, what else is there?"
"Little Fish, I heard you're having a really tough time. What did those old women do to you? I heard they even stripped you naked?" Section Chief Bai's eyes were a little dazed, and the way he looked at Qin Xiaoyu changed.
"That's all nonsense, it's not true!" Qin Xiaoyu said angrily.
"Really? You'd better think this through. What's the situation now? Are you looking for a new backer?" Section Chief Bai leaned forward with ill intent.
Qin Xiaoyu took a step back, her waist already against the box.
