Chapter 172 The man surnamed Lei

She slumped down onto the steering wheel, drenched in sweat, and then knew nothing more.

She was awakened by a knocking sound on the window. She looked up blankly and saw a familiar face pressed against the car window.

She tried hard to recall if she recognized the face; he was the best man at the wedding just now.

Because her attention was focused on the groom, her impression of the best man was only vague—that he was very tall and handsome.

This face was more mature than Zhou Xing's, and had a more scholarly air about it. He looked like a mixed-race person, with naturally curly dark brown hair, a slightly long face, long and thick eyelashes, large, warm and innocent eyes, a high nose bridge, and square, tightly pursed lips.

His eyes held concern, yet they were warm. Qin Xiaoyu instantly trusted him.

She laboriously bent down and unlocked the car door, and the best man jumped into the car.

"How are you? Should I take you to the hospital?" he asked anxiously.

"It seems like it's not a big problem." Qin Xiaoyu took a deep breath, and felt a sharp pain in her chest.

“You don’t look well. Let me drive you to the hospital,” the best man insisted.

"Really, it's not necessary, I..." Qin Xiaoyu said she could manage, but then she realized that her hands were shaking so badly that she couldn't even hold the steering wheel. How could she possibly manage? She looked up at the best man for help.

Qin Xiaoyu's eyes were as clear as a deer's, harmless and irresistible.

The best man jumped out of the car, moved to the driver's seat, and opened the door to help Qin Xiaoyu out. However, her body was too limp to lift, making it difficult for her to climb down. Helpless, he reached out and scooped Qin Xiaoyu into his arms, and before she could protest, he strode to the passenger seat and gently placed her inside.

Qin Xiaoyu's face turned bright red, and she said thank you in an almost inaudible voice.

"Go to the hospital?" The best man respected her and confirmed her opinion.

"No, I'm not going." Qin Xiaoyu didn't know where to go either. Going to the Zhou family to ask was unrealistic; leaving the Zhou family meant leaving that circle, and she wouldn't know where to start.

"What happened? You were perfectly fine at the wedding." The best man was very attentive.

"Do you know who I am?" Qin Xiaoyu suddenly couldn't hold back anymore; her tears flowed uncontrollably, and she couldn't wipe them away.

"Know."

"Do you know Zhou Xing?" Qin Xiaoyu suddenly realized that this might be someone in the know, and she grabbed the best man's arm.

"I don't know him." The best man's answer made Qin Xiaoyu's eyes darken. He added, "I've heard of him."

"Did you know he was injured?"

"He won't die."

Qin Xiaoyu slumped into his seat, covered his face with his hands, and burst into tears. All he needed was to be alive; nothing else mattered.

"I can tell you love him very much," the best man said with emotion, taking a gray and white checkered handkerchief from his pocket and handing it to you.

Qin Xiaoyu took it, rubbed her eyes vigorously a few times, and lowered her head in embarrassment.

"I've heard so much about you. Call that internal phone number to my house and ask for my grandfather." The best man chuckled, as if it were a very amusing idea.

"So, your surname is Lei?" Qin Xiaoyu was taken aback, as if she had realized something.

"You're so cute. Okay, then just call me Lei, my last name is Lei." Lei's smile was warm, and Qin Xiaoyu gradually calmed down.

"Where exactly is Zhou Xing injured? How serious is it?" Qin Xiaoyu felt that he knew everything just because he was surnamed Lei.

"All I know is that I'm out of danger, nothing else..." He shrugged.

"Okay, thank you." Qin Xiaoyu gave a wry smile.

"Did Bai Weiwei tell you?" A Lei asked casually.

"Yes. Oh no, she's already paid the price. Let's just let this go." Qin Xiaoyu felt disgusted just thinking about the groom's heavy breathing. Bai Weiwei having to spend the rest of her life with a man like that was already the best punishment.

"You're so kind, you're even pleading for her. Let me tell you the truth, who she marries has nothing to do with you."

"What's the meaning?"

"I don't know how much you know about Bai Weiwei. Back then, she ruined an entire family with a single poem."

“I’ve heard of that!” Qin Xiaoyu recalled the story Commander Wang had told her, her eyes wide as she listened to A Lei continue.

"She married her classmate's father."

"What?"

"Back then, Zuo Xiangyang was at the height of his career, capable, hardworking, and with a promising future. But this incident dragged him down, he was sent to the countryside for reform, developed severe rheumatism, which eventually progressed to rheumatic heart disease, ruined his health, and broke up his family. He slapped his daughter so hard that it ruptured her eardrum, and she hated him for the rest of her life. The two never spoke to each other again." A Lei's calm voice was devoid of any emotion, but Qin Xiaoyu listened with a chill down her spine.

"So, what goes around comes around, and no one escapes the wrath of Heaven."

"Yes, she's just paying the price for her own actions. As for you, you're just a small pawn, you don't need to worry about you." A Lei's words made Qin Xiaoyu even more uneasy; this circle was terrifying.

But where did she finally climb up?

Lei insisted on taking Qin Xiaoyu home.

Upon reaching the ground floor, before A Lei could even get out of the car, Qin Xiaoyu jumped down. The moment she landed, a sharp pain shot through her chest, and her face contorted in pain.

"Are you really okay?" A Lei quickly came around to support her.

"It's okay, thank you, I'm fine now." Qin Xiaoyu quickly pushed him away.

Now she's downstairs in her own building, with so many eyes watching, and her clothes are so eye-catching. Now she understands what Grandma Zhang meant when she said, "Don't be suspicious in a melon patch or under suspicious circumstances; the ancients were right."

After seeing A Lei off, Qin Xiaoyu didn't go upstairs. She gritted her teeth and drove to Qi Si's place.

First, she needs to pick up her child; second, she needs advice.

The sky, which had just cleared, was overcast again. Zhou Xing was injured, but where was he injured? Although A Lei said he wasn't in mortal danger, that was too vague; she wanted to know all the details.

Qin Xiaoyu was truly at a loss as to where to find out information. Going to Zhou Xing's mother was out of the question, and even finding someone else who knew the situation was uncertain.

If all else fails, should they just confront the Zhou family head-on? Qin Xiaoyu's heart pounded; she decided to take the risk.

"Hey girl, calm down. Why don't you call that silly girl first?" Qi Si was relatively calm, and his words reminded Qin Xiaoyu that she had forgotten about Zhou Yue.

Now that she has broken ties with the Zhou family, although she has always been on good terms with Zhou Yue, her attitude is unknown, so she can only try her luck as a last resort.

Zhou Yue wasn't home, and Qin Xiaoyu gave a wry smile before hanging up the phone. This little princess, once cherished by Commander Zhou, was now struggling on her quest for a child.

She had many plans, but now all she could do was wait. Every day Zhou Xing didn't return safely, it was as if the pause button had been pressed, leaving her unable to move forward.

Only now did she understand what Tang Wenwen meant by love. It was something bittersweet, yet impossible to give up.
