Then we can bring Hanhan back to school. As for the younger sister, she's a girl, and she'll belong to someone else sooner or later. She can't speak, so the Tang family won't want her.
After six hours of waiting, Qi Si called from the station.
“I asked around inside and outside the station. It’s a small station with not many passengers. The station staff said they saw people with teenagers, but they weren’t wearing leather jackets. Now it seems either they changed Hanhan’s clothes, or someone is lying.”
"What should we do?" Qin Xiaoyu panicked and didn't know what to do.
"I'll keep checking and see where all the people with children went. Whether it's Hanhan or not is still uncertain. You just stay home and wait." Qi Si hung up the phone.
Well said. Tell her to wait at home. Every minute feels like being roasted on a fire and fried in oil. Qin Xiaoyu feels she can't take it anymore.
She looked up at the window and realized it was already evening. She hadn't cooked, and her younger sister wasn't complaining of being hungry.
Without Hanhan, the home is cold and desolate, not warm at all.
The younger sister was writing on her desk. Qin Xiaoyu leaned over to look and saw that the character "哥" (brother) was becoming increasingly neat. On the other side were several pages with the character "奶" (grandmother).
This child has gone mad with longing. She misses these two people but can't express it, and she's suffering inside.
But Qin Xiaoyu was no different. She hadn't been eating or sleeping well for the past two days, and she had reached her limit. The anger she had been holding back slowly burst out. She felt dizzy and lightheaded. She wanted to get something to eat for her younger sister, but she collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep without even taking off her clothes.
She slept for a long time. In her hazy state, she seemed to feel someone place a wet towel on her head and cold fingers tracing across her forehead. It was Zhou Xing's hand. Where was he?
When Qin Xiaoyu opened her eyes, it was already broad daylight. She glanced around and saw that her younger sister was not there.
She had a splitting headache; she probably had a cold. Her whole body ached as if she had been beaten up.
"Little sister, are you hungry?" Qin Xiaoyu's voice was hoarse, and it hurt to speak.
There was no movement, and no one was at the desk. A sense of foreboding slowly crept in. Qin Xiaoyu rushed to the kitchen and the balcony, but no one was there. Finally, she looked at the empty bathroom and almost knelt down. Her younger sister wasn't in the house.
She rushed to the door, which she had locked the night before when she got home. The door was open, but closed. This meant her younger sister had gone out of the house.
Qin Xiaoyu glanced around and saw that her younger sister's coat was gone.
Did the child go to find his brother on his own?
It's all her fault. She ignored the children's feelings. No matter how badly she's hurting, it's not as bad as her little sister's pain. The little sister grew up under her brother's care, never separated from him since birth. How can she bear it?
Qin Xiaoyu stumbled around the neighborhood, realizing her search was futile. She needed to calm down.
She returned home, trying to find a note or clue left by her younger sister. A thick stack of papers on the table caught her attention; half of it bore the character for "grandmother," and the other half the character for "brother." Could it be that her younger sister had been writing all night?
Grandma, brother...
Qin Xiaoyu understood. Her younger sister couldn't explain it, but she felt that her brother should be with the Zhou family.
The military compound was a place she couldn't avoid.
It seems that a water pipe in the military area also burst; the outer wall is flooded with water, covered with a layer of ice, and steam is still rising from below.
Construction has already begun; a ditch has been dug near the railing not far from the gate.
As expected, Qin Xiaoyu was stopped at the door.
As she was trying to persuade them, she heard a noise behind her, and a car stopped. Then a young soldier jumped out of the car.
"Xiao Chen! Have you seen Little Sister?" Qin Xiaoyu asked hurriedly.
"Little sister? Didn't Hanhan disappear?" Xiao Chen was a little confused and looked back uneasily.
The car door opened, and Zhou Xing's mother stepped out expressionlessly.
"I heard my husband Zhou came to you, why are you still bothering me?" For some reason, Zhou Xing's mother's voice was soft, lacking its usual domineering tone.
"My little sister is missing. I'm looking for her."
"Your child is lost, so you come here to look for him? What kind of logic is that!" Zhou Xing's mother said bluntly.
"That's the logic. This is what my younger sister wrote. That's how I found her..." Qin Xiaoyu slapped the few pages of "milk" written by her younger sister into Zhou Xing's mother's hand, took a deep breath and said, "If my younger sister comes, please keep her here for me and let me know. Thank you!" Qin Xiaoyu bowed deeply.
What is face? She'd give up everything for her daughter.
"How could you be such a mother? You've lost both of your children! Cough cough!" Qin Xiaoyu had walked quite a distance before she heard Zhou Xing's mother's angry rebuke carried on the wind.
Qin Xiaoyu's tears flowed uncontrollably. What could she do? Life seemed to be playing tricks on her all along.
My little sister is different from Hanhan. Although she is not short, she is still a child under four years old. She can't speak or write, and she is very pretty. If she were to get lost, it would be a huge problem.
She started searching again along the road from her home to the military area; perhaps the child was lost. The younger sister was timid, and it would be dawn soon if she went out; she'd keep looking.
Qin Xiaoyu was unaware that while she was complaining about the unfairness of fate, Zhou Xing's mother had already been driven mad by her.
Zhou Xing's mother didn't know when her heart softened. Maybe it was when she turned over in the dead of night and realized that her soft, sweet baby was missing from her side. She hadn't loved someone like this in a very long time.
Throughout her life, she has always been a ruthless character; no one has done it better than her at decluttering. She doesn't compromise; if something isn't suitable, she discards it.
But this young woman alone made her completely let go of her pride.
But it was also the one that was hurt the most. It disappeared without warning, without any time to recover, like a knife slashing out and tearing a piece of flesh from the heart.
What's wrong with a child doing something that's an adult's problem?
She kept asking herself this question, but she couldn't just give in.
"Auntie, please get in the car. You just came from the hospital and are still weak," Xiao Chen kindly reminded her. She could only return to the car dejectedly.
Looking down, I noticed she was still clutching a few sheets of paper with neatly written characters for "milk" on them. When she was next to her, her younger sister couldn't write them yet; how long had she been practicing?
"Xiao Chen, can you hear anything?"
"What was that sound?" Xiao Chen asked, puzzled.
"It's a girl's voice calling for her grandmother."
"No," Xiao Chen said decisively, then hesitated and cautiously reminded her, "Auntie, my little sister can't speak."
“Yes, she can’t speak. What if she’s really lost?” Zhou Xing’s mother’s voice choked with sobs; once the hole in her heart was opened, it immediately burst forth.
During this time, she hated Qin Xiaoyu and wished she could erase Qin Xiaoyu from this world. Everything related to Qin Xiaoyu was forbidden.
Now it was she who broke the rules by mentioning her younger sister, touching the softest spot in her heart, and the pain was hard to suppress.
