"He's been taken away because he needs to be transferred to another hospital immediately for treatment. The medical facilities here are too poor; they can't wait for you to wake up," Deng Jianyan said regretfully.
"Is he alright? Is his life in danger?"
"His life is not in danger, but his feet are severely frostbitten. It depends on the treatment results. If it doesn't go well, he might have to have his leg amputated. I've tried some folk remedies. If he's lucky, he'll be fine."
"Amputation?" Qin Xiaoyu fell back onto the hospital bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. This was truly a nightmare.
"Sister-in-law!" Tang Wenwen, dressed like a ball, rolled in.
"Wenwen." Qin Xiaoyu grinned and burst into tears.
"Don't cry, you have frostbite on your face. It will hurt when you apply the medicine," Tang Wenwen quickly stopped her.
"How is Zhou Xing doing?"
"He's incredibly lucky. He survived the front lines, how could he freeze to death? Don't worry, we've contacted Commander Zhou, the military region is sending people to meet him, and he has the best medical support. Don't fret."
Hearing Tang Wenwen say this, Qin Xiaoyu finally relaxed and then felt a series of intense itching sensations in her toes.
"This Dr. Deng is quite an extraordinary person. His family has been practicing traditional Chinese medicine for generations, and he has many methods. That's why I'm keeping you here for him to treat you. You should be fine in less than two days."
"Then why not keep Zhou Xing here?" Qin Xiaoyu understood the reason.
“Commander Zhou is in a hurry to get him back, and no one dares to stop him. Since you haven’t woken up, no one can take responsibility, so we have no choice but to let him go,” Tang Wenwen sighed.
"No, I have to leave right now, I have to see him!" Qin Xiaoyu suddenly sat up. She had a strange feeling of trust in Deng Jianyan, and she hoped that he would be the one to treat Zhou Xing.
"Wait one more day, let me think about it. I want to go with you." Tang Wenwen quickly pressed her down to lie down.
"We can't wait even a day, what if Zhou Xing..."
“He has the best military doctor, so you don’t need to worry so much. Besides, Lao Deng said he’s not in any danger, so what’s one more day?” Tang Wenwen saw Deng Jianyan go to the outer room to get medicine and hurriedly whispered in Qin Xiaoyu’s ear, “Lao Deng’s pride was hurt. When the troops came to pick him up, they were very rude, calling him a barefoot doctor and such!”
"I see." Qin Xiaoyu understood.
"Sister-in-law, what can I say? You've done so much for me. Now I realize how selfish I've been..." Tang Wenwen lowered her head, rubbing her belly, unable to continue.
"Don't blame yourself, it has nothing to do with you, it's my oversight. By the way, how is Brother Qu?" Qin Xiaoyu suddenly remembered Da Qu, who hadn't shown up yet.
"Brother Qu broke his leg, but thankfully he survived. He fell into a ravine," Tang Wenwen sighed.
"He didn't find anyone? How were we rescued?" Qin Xiaoyu asked, puzzled.
"Where is your savior?" Tang Wenwen gestured towards the back of the curtain.
It turned out that Deng Jianyan's car had arrived at the farm early. In the afternoon, when he went to buy wine, he ran into Ge Laosao and brought up Qin Xiaoyu's matter.
Unexpectedly, Ge Laosao said that Daqu's car hadn't returned yet. Both of them are experienced drivers and know the mountain roads very well. Judging from the timeline, Daqu should have arrived by now; if he hasn't, it means there was a problem on the way.
Ge Lao Sao rushed to the team leader's house. The team leader panicked when he heard about it and sent people to search along the road, and they actually saved their lives.
"Brother Deng, thank you so much for saving me several times." Qin Xiaoyu realized that Deng Jianyan was truly her benefactor.
"It's all good that you're alright. Your boyfriend was reliable for once, protecting you well, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten so cold." Deng Jianyan sighed.
Communication between the mountains and the outside world was always interrupted. Qin Xiaoyu couldn't wait any longer. Deng Jianyan really had a way with her. In just one day, her frostbite was basically healed, and she clamored to go back to the city.
"Sister-in-law, I've made up my mind. I'll go with you." Tang Wenwen struggled with her decision for two days before finally deciding.
"Let's go. We'll brave the storms, one step at a time. I'm really worried about you staying here. If something unexpected happens, we won't even have time to save you." Qin Xiaoyu was determined to go all out.
"I've been here in this sweltering heat for over two months, and now I'm leaving so suddenly. I really hate to see you go." Sister-in-law Ge's eyes were red as she packed several large bags of mountain produce for them.
"How am I supposed to carry all of these?" Qin Xiaoyu was dizzy just looking at them.
“This time I don’t trust anyone else. Your brother Ge will see you off to Nenjiang, all the way to the train station. Once you arrive in Nenjiang, just contact your family to pick you up at the station. You don’t need to carry anything.” Sister-in-law Ge had arranged it all.
Before leaving, Qin Xiaoyu intended to leave some money, tucking it into the blanket, but then thought better of it and took it out again. This kindness couldn't be measured in money; it might even alienate their relationship. As long as she was alive, she could repay the kindness sooner or later.
Just as Sister-in-law Ge had arranged, once they arrived in Nenjiang, Qin Xiaoyu hesitated with a heavy heart as she held the phone.
Zhou Xing came out with her, but he lied to his family. Now that he's done this to someone else's son, how is he going to explain this?
"Xiaoyu, are you alright? I was so worried about you!" Zhou Xing's mother's voice trembled with tears as soon as she heard Qin Xiaoyu's voice.
"Mom, how is Zhou Xing?"
"He's alright now, and his leg has been saved, so don't worry. Come back soon; it'll be easier to get treatment back here," Zhou Xing's mother instructed.
Qin Xiaoyu never expected that Commander Zhou would be waiting for her on the platform. Xiao Chen ran onto the car to help carry the bags and packages down, and Commander Zhou led the two sisters out of the station through the VIP lounge first.
"They all wanted to come to pick me up, but I didn't let them. Why make such a fuss?" Commander Zhou's words almost made Qin Xiaoyu laugh. So, a commander personally picking someone up isn't making a fuss?
"Big Brother, is Zhou Xing alright?" Qin Xiaoyu was still concerned about this.
"The frostbite isn't serious, it'll heal with some rest. Shall we go to the hospital first? Otherwise, I won't feel at ease seeing you like this." Commander Zhou was very considerate.
Zhou Xing lay in the hospital bed, his face covered in medicine, making him look rather ugly.
The attending physician took them to his office and explained their condition.
"Old Chief, I'm ashamed to say, but I used to call him the barefoot doctor. His medical skills are indeed superior to mine. At the time, I thought Zhou Xing's injuries were very serious, but after bringing him back, I found that he received the best treatment. If I hadn't insisted on taking him away, he might have recovered by now," the attending physician said with shame.
Qin Xiaoyu listened to these words in astonishment and couldn't help but sigh at how transparent his heart was. He could have easily kept quiet, taking all the credit for himself, and no one would have exposed him, leaving not a trace.
But in order to clear the name of a colleague he had never met, he was willing to lose face himself.
"There are a few more things I'd like to say to you privately." The attending physician glanced at Qin Xiaoyu, who quickly and tactfully withdrew.
Zhou Xing was already awake. When he saw her come in, he struggled to sit up, but the nurse quickly stopped him.
