Chapter 30 The Sourness of Love

"I couldn't be bothered to listen to their band rehearsal, so I came out to have dinner with you."

Qin Xiaoyu checked the time; it was almost noon.

"Master, you mind the shop. I'm going out to grab a bite to eat with Wenwen and I'll bring you some steamed buns when I get back."

Master Wang readily agreed, and the two women went out. In those days, restaurants were mostly state-owned, located on main streets. They had no particular destination in mind, chatting as they searched for a restaurant.

"Wenwen, your boyfriend doesn't seem like a normal person." Qin Xiaoyu was a little worried, afraid that she would get taken advantage of.

"Musicians are all a bit eccentric, but they're actually nice people. They might have a bit of a temper, but they're kind and soft-hearted." Tang Wenwen saw through them quite clearly.

You need to learn to protect yourself.

"Got it, you're even more annoying than my mom." Tang Wenwen smiled and gave Qin Xiaoyu a push. Qin Xiaoyu couldn't help but chuckle. Was she getting too into character? She was worrying about her sister-in-law just like her own sister-in-law.

Did he help you get a job transfer?

"Your sister-in-law is smart. Her mother is the director of the Second Light Industry Bureau."

"The Second Light Industry Bureau?" Tang Wenwen had never heard of this organization.

"Oh dear, that might not even exist in your time. Let me put it this way, he managed a lot of companies, and our factory manager would bow and scrape to his mother."

"So how did you two meet?"

"It was Zhou Xing who introduced it."

It's Zhou Xing again. No wonder. Zhou Xing comes from an extraordinary background, and his circle of friends must be full of similar people. No wonder they all have such an aloof and unapproachable air about them.

They walked for at least two intersections before finally seeing a large sign in the distance: Huibin Steamed Bun Shop. The entrance was bustling with people coming and going.

This was Qin Xiaoyu's first time eating at a restaurant like this. Her host had been poor since childhood and had never been to a restaurant before.

The restaurant is a bit like a cafeteria. You don't order food directly; you have to go to the counter to get a ticket first, and the prices of all the dishes are written on a sign.

Qin Xiaoyu ordered a stir-fried pork with garlic sprouts, two servings of rice, and three steamed buns before taking her ticket and joining the queue to get her food.

The prepared dishes are displayed on large enamel trays in the glass counter. The waiters pay for the dishes based on the tickets, and use large ladles to scoop the food into small plates and hand them out the window. A full ladle is one serving.

Qin Xiaoyu brought over a tray, and Tang Wenwen had already taken a seat by the window. The two of them each had a bowl of rice.

"It smells so good!" Qin Xiaoyu almost burst into tears after taking a bite. In her previous life, she ate rice all the time, but after being reborn, she ate noodles or porridge almost every day.

Because steaming rice over a stove is a skill that neither she nor Hanhan could do well, she felt alive again when she tasted the long-missed rice.

Perhaps because the pork is fed with soybean cake, the stir-fried pork is especially fragrant.

"Sister-in-law, you look like you haven't eaten for days. Did you have much better food in your time?"

"Yes and no, the delicious food we have now will almost be gone by then, it's irreplaceable," Qin Xiaoyu replied, her mouth full of rice.

Tang Wenwen didn't quite understand, and pondered for a long time while biting her chopsticks.

"By the way, sister-in-law, you're not allowed to get my hair cut by anyone else. If anyone else gets the same haircut, I'll never forgive you!"

"You silly girl! What if someone else imitates you, and you come looking for me too?"

"Who can imitate that? These people are all old-fashioned. Look at the hairstyle Jingtian wants, even Liu Cixin wouldn't cut it."

"You believe that? Da Liu didn't cut his hair because he was being cautious, afraid of getting beaten up!"

"Aren't you afraid of getting beaten up?"

"What am I afraid of? You'll be there to hold the sky up if it falls. Don't I know your capabilities? Even if I cut his hair to his satisfaction, and something really goes wrong, what would he dare say to you?"

Qin Xiaoyu's words made Tang Wenwen look smug.

"Sister-in-law, I have something important to tell you. I think you're quite shrewd. Could you teach me about any business opportunities you might have? I don't like being subservient to others, and even after marriage, I don't want to rely on my husband's family for a living. It's better to be capable on my own."

“You’re right, women should have their own careers. I’ve considered all of you, including you and my cousin. There’s no rush. Once I’ve sorted things out, you’ll all have something to do.”

This was part of Qin Xiaoyu's plan. She didn't want to drag her whole family into the same business. The best way to keep family members from being at odds with each other was to share everything in the same pot and split the profits. So she wanted to find a way to ensure that her family members all had their own careers.

In critical moments, it's important to be able to support each other while also acting independently, without causing too much trouble. This requires careful thought and cannot be rushed.

When she got home that evening, she was met with a cold reception as soon as she entered the courtyard; her grandmother was waiting for her angrily.

"What kind of haircut did you give Wenwen! How can she be seen in public like that? There are hundreds of households in these dormitories, and not a single person has hair like that!"

“What’s there to be afraid of if they’re all different? Just tell me if they look good or not,” Grandpa Hanhan said as he came out of the house.

"My daughter is beautiful, she looks good with any hairstyle," Grandma Hanhan insisted.

"It's fine as long as it looks good. The child is tired after a long day. You're not helping out, and you're just making trouble for no reason. Go inside!" Hanhan's grandfather was unusually firm, which stunned Hanhan's grandmother, who then followed him inside.

The next day, shortly after the shop opened, a regular customer came in, and Mr. Wang was so busy that he sent her to get her hair washed.

Suddenly, the shop door opened, and a group of people rushed in. Qin Xiaoyu was startled. What was with these six identical Elvis Presley figures? Did the fall of one Elvis Presley figure lead to the rise of countless others?

That's right, the six people who came in all had the exact same hairstyle as Jing Tian when he arrived yesterday: slicked-back hair, sunglasses, and wide-legged bell-bottoms.

A line from a song flashed through Qin Xiaoyu's mind: "Huluwa, Huluwa, seven gourds on one vine..."

No, there are six. She shook her head.
