"I'm sorry, I made a mistake," Qin Xiaoyu said, holding back her tears.
"You say sorry and you're sorry? What kind of behavior is this, coming to our house in the middle of the night and making a scene? My sister-in-law is easy to bully, but I'm not!" The older sister-in-law is not tall, but she has a big temper. She was about to start a fight.
"Never mind, sister, she's just worried because her child is lost." Zuo Xiurong was kind enough to cover for Qin Xiaoyu.
"This is a small token of my appreciation. Buy some candy for the child." A Lei took out a hundred yuan from his wallet and handed it over.
The man on the kang (a heated brick bed) was about to lie back down when he heard this. He sat up again, snatched the money, and counted it carefully.
"Don't go! The money is too little!" When the man saw that Qin Xiaoyu and A Lei had reached the door, he hurriedly jumped off the kang. His vest was so torn that it could no longer cover his body. Qin Xiaoyu screamed and hid behind A Lei.
"How much money do you want?" Are stopped.
"Give me a thousand!" The man used all his strength to ask for an astronomical sum, which scared the sister-in-law half to death, leaving her mouth agape and speechless.
"Brother-in-law, let's talk about it tomorrow. Let them leave." Zuo Xiurong kept pushing people out.
"What are you doing? You're betraying your own people! Why are you so upset about the money they give you?" The brother-in-law was furious when he saw Zuo Xiurong being so shameless.
"I didn't say I wouldn't give it to you, it'll be tomorrow, tomorrow!" Zuo Xiurong stammered, only concerned with shooing people away.
Qin Xiaoyu sensed something amiss. What was she afraid of? Why was she in such a hurry to send them away? Did the child have something to say about her?
She slipped out from behind Are and went into the inner room.
The adults' noise kept the children awake, and they all perked up, peering towards the door. When they saw Qin Xiaoyu come in, they scurried back inside, startled.
Only the daughter was brave; she craned her neck to look, showing no fear whatsoever.
"Come on, the kids have school tomorrow, hurry up!" Zuo Xiurong saw Qin Xiaoyu turn back and realized she was really anxious, so she came over and dragged her outside.
"Let me take another look." Qin Xiaoyu was unwilling to give up and walked towards the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed). A Lei was blocked at the door by his brother-in-law and couldn't help. Qin Xiaoyu's small frame was no match for Zuo Xiurong's strength, so she moved further and further away from the kang.
Suddenly, the eldest sister-in-law's daughter jumped off the kang (a heated brick bed) and ran barefoot toward the door.
"Go up there! What are you going to do!" The eldest sister-in-law panicked and grabbed a feather duster to hit him.
The daughter cried out in pain twice and jumped up and down.
"I need to pee! Why won't you let me pee?!"
"What are you peeing for! Go to sleep!"
Suddenly, A Lei understood something. He grabbed his brother-in-law and threw him aside, where he landed on a pile of pots and pans with a loud crash. Taking advantage of this moment, A Lei went inside, grabbed his sister-in-law, and threw her backward.
The child was in a hurry to urinate. Seeing an opportunity, he took two steps to the chamber pot, and without caring that anyone was around, he pulled down his pants and started urinating standing up.
Zuo Xiurong slumped onto the kang (a heated brick bed), unable to utter a single word.
"You broke into my house in the middle of the night and even hit me, didn't you? I'm going to call the police to arrest you!" The brother-in-law got angry and opened the door to leave, but his sister-in-law pulled him back, pinched his arm a few times, and kept giving him meaningful glances before he calmed down.
"Hehe, what do we do now? Are you going to take them away?" Zuo Xiurong asked with a wry smile.
"Is there even a question? You know perfectly well who he is, yet you still act as a traitor. I admire you for that." Qin Xiaoyu grabbed a thin blanket and threw it to A Lei.
A Lei wrapped Zuo Bin in a blanket and went outside.
Bai Weiwei hadn't been sent to the detention center yet; she was being held at the police station. So when Qin Xiaoyu and the others arrived, the police officers on duty quickly took them inside.
Upon seeing Zuo Bin, Bai Weiwei was taken aback for a moment.
Zuo Bin didn't recognize his mother either, still in shock.
"Is it Binbin?" Bai Weiwei glanced at Qin Xiaoyu, knowing she wouldn't joke about this, so she asked tentatively.
"Mom?" Zuo Bin suddenly ran up to Bai Weiwei, reached out his chubby little hand, brushed her loose white hair, and looked at her face carefully.
"It's me, it's Mom!" Bai Weiwei suddenly broke down, hugged Zuo Bin, and cried loudly.
Qin Xiaoyu didn't speak, giving her some time. At this moment, she could still endure it, because she was also a mother.
“Let’s go. You’ll keep your word. I’ll give your child back to you.” Bai Weiwei stood up.
Qin Xiaoyu realized that she had truly grown through this experience. If she had been able to take responsibility earlier, she wouldn't be in this situation today.
Bai Weiwei sat in the passenger seat and gave directions, heading towards the suburbs.
"Is my son alright?" Qin Xiaoyu's heart was in her throat. She was always afraid that Bai Weiwei might lead them to a small mound and say that Xiao Jiajia was sleeping there forever.
"Heh, don't worry about what I promised you." Bai Weiwei sneered.
Qin Xiaoyu and A Lei held hands tightly. The police officers were driving, and they were too emotional to control the steering wheel.
The car drove into a residential area, where it was pitch black everywhere. Bai Weiwei got out of the car and struggled to carry Zuo Bin.
"Let me take it." The police officer tried to take the child, but Bai Weiwei warily dodged away.
“Don’t touch my child,” she warned.
"Let her hold him!" Qin Xiaoyu said hurriedly.
Bai Weiwei didn't seem to know the way very well either. When they arrived at a house, she patted it twice and then led them away.
After circling around a few times, she finally stood in front of a wooden gate. This time, as soon as she tapped it, a fierce barking came from inside.
The door opened quickly, and a woman came running out.
"I've come to pick up the child," Bai Weiwei said.
"You're so late," the woman complained, then turned around and kicked the stray dog. The dog howled and ran away, and the group went inside.
There was a large kang (heated brick bed) in the room. About ten children were sleeping on it, arranged neatly from oldest to youngest.
Qin Xiaoyu understood. She rushed to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and started searching from the smallest child. The third child from the bottom opened his big eyes, smiled sweetly at her, and called out, "Mommy."
This was probably the most beautiful sound in the world. Qin Xiaoyu picked up Xiao Jiajia and burst into tears. A Lei also rushed over and hugged the two people he loved most tightly, not wanting to let go for even a moment.
Bai Weiwei was quite clever; she simply found a family with many children, left them twenty yuan, and asked them to take care of the children for a few days.
Such people are isolated from society and belong to the lowest rung of society. Even if A Lei advertises on TV every day, broadcasting messages about finding his son, or even posts notices on his door, it won't make a difference.
They don't understand.
This person was randomly selected by Bai Weiwei, and they had no prior contact, so even Sister Liu and the landlord didn't know about them. Aside from borrowing money, they had nothing else to do, and no one else cared about this litter of piglets; whether there were more or less, they were left to fend for themselves.
Fortunately, Jiajia is healthy. Although the food here is not good, she has not suffered too much and has not caught a cold.
