Chapter 1
Ji Wanmei opened her eyes groggily.
I found myself lying in a familiar room, on an old-fashioned bamboo mat that I had used twenty years ago, with an electric fan whirring on the table.
The electric fan looked familiar; it resembled the Great Wall brand fan her father had bought for 150 yuan when he went on a business trip to Beijing in 1987.
After graduating from university, she married Yang Zhiping with her father's arrangement and moved. The fan remained in her room at her parents' home.
Even after she divorced Yang Zhiping and moved back to her own home, the fan continued to be used for several more years before breaking down.
This room was Ji Wanmei's boudoir until she was eighteen years old.
Everything in the room was so familiar.
The windows were painted green, and a pot of hanging orchids sat on the windowsill. Matching checkered cotton curtains hung on iron hooks on both sides.
There was a long, yellowed desk in front of the window, with a stack of college entrance exam review materials on it.
There was also a framed photo on the table.
The girl in the photo has fair skin and black hair, is beautiful and charming, with two small braids and a floral dress. Her youthful vigor cannot be concealed even by the vintage laminated photo.
That was taken on the day she turned eighteen; she went to a photo studio in the city specifically for the photo.
She returned to when she was eighteen years old.
Am I dreaming?
Ji Wanmei looked at everything that seemed like a dream, and recalled what happened before she lost consciousness.
On her way to Pingquan County Prison, she collided with a large truck, resulting in a car accident.
She died, but returned to when she was eighteen?
Ji Wanmei pinched her arm in disbelief, "Ouch...it hurts!"
She's not dreaming, she really has been reborn!
When Ji Wanmei realized what had happened, she immediately sat up in bed and quickly walked outside. When she saw the familiar scene outside the yard, she almost burst into tears.
Her father was the factory director of Dongfang Daily Chemical Factory. This was a staff dormitory allocated to the factory's leading cadres. It was a two-bedroom, one-living room apartment with a spacious courtyard. Her father liked to grow flowers and plants in his spare time.
This is where she grew up.
That year, she had just received her university admission notice; that same year, her father and the deputy factory director Yang's families got engaged, arranging for her to marry Yang Zhiping after graduating from university.
This decision changed the course of her life.
Ji Wanmei became more and more excited as she thought about it, her heart surging with emotion.
If she could go back to being eighteen, Ji Wanmei would absolutely, positively refuse to marry that scumbag Yang Zhiping again!
"Come in quickly, everyone, come in and sit down!" Just then, Ji Wanmei's father's voice rang out from outside the courtyard.
Ji Wanmei was taken aback; she hadn't heard that voice in almost ten years.
Overjoyed, she ran a few steps and, with a heart full of longing, went to the door to greet her father. Just then, the iron gate was pushed open from the outside, and Ji Wanmei saw her father, Ji Xingguo, beckoning several people as they walked in.
As soon as Ji Xingguo entered, he saw his daughter standing in the yard in astonishment. He smiled and said, "Meimei, your Uncle Yang and the others are visiting today. Go and brew a pot of tea, and bring out my treasured Tieguanyin!"
Ji Wanmei's gaze shifted to the group of people behind her father, where she saw Yang Zhiping, his father, Deputy Factory Director Yang, and another slightly plump woman with a smile.
At this time, Yang Zhiping still sported a Shanghai hairstyle, wore thick black-rimmed glasses, and dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, which were fashionable among young people at the time, giving him a refined and elegant appearance.
But no one knew that beneath that refined and handsome face lay a heart of utter wickedness and cruelty.
When Yang Zhiping saw her, his eyes behind his glasses revealed undisguised amazement. He greeted her with a polite smile: "Sister Wanmei, it's been years since I last saw you. You...you've grown into such a graceful and poised woman."
Ji Wanmei took a breath. Seeing this scene, what else could she not remember?
Eighteen years ago, on this very day, Deputy Factory Director Yang, along with his son Yang Zhiping and a matchmaker, came to their home for a blind date.
Although it was a blind date, her father, Ji Xingguo, had already reached an agreement with Deputy Factory Director Yang. They were just waiting for their children to meet and nod to each other before the wedding date could be set in stone.
Ji Wanmei stared coldly at Yang Zhiping, wondering how she had responded to him at this time in her previous life.
That day, Ji Wanmei had just finished reviewing her study materials in the house when her father brought Yang Zhiping and his son to the house.
When Yang Zhiping first saw her, he also showed a look of amazement, then rubbed his hands together and greeted her politely and shyly.
At that time, Ji Wanmei was still very young and shy. She lowered her head and replied, "Brother Zhiping, Uncle Yang, please come in and sit down."
Ji Wanmei was so naive back then.
Yang Zhiping was four years older than her. Because of his father, the two families would occasionally visit each other during festivals when they were young.
At the time, she was still young and only thought he was the son of one of her father's coworkers. Later, Yang Zhiping went to university in another city, and Ji Wanmei never saw him again.
When he returned to Pingquan County, he had already graduated from university.
At this time, Ji Wanmei had just received her university admission notice and was filled with longing for university life. Therefore, her first impression of Yang Zhiping upon seeing him again was also filtered through the lens of a university student.
It was precisely this naive view of 'scholars' that caused Ji Wanmei to misjudge people and marry the wrong person. Not only did it lead to her own unhappy marriage, but later even her factory was seized by Yang Zhiping.
Her father was so devastated by this that he fell ill and died the following year.
Now reborn, Ji Wanmei thought of what happened in her previous life and hated him so much that she didn't want to look at him anymore. She turned away coldly and didn't respond to him with a single word.
Yang Zhiping was taken aback.
