Chapter 220
"Who is it?" Ji Wanmei asked, looking at her father.
Ji Xingguo looked at her meaningfully: "Don't you know who you are?"
Ji Wanmei gave her father a dry laugh, got up and ran over to answer the phone, whispering, "Hello?"
"Junior sister, you're home already." Lu Zhuoxuan's cheerful voice came from the other end of the phone. "I was worried about you traveling alone on the long bus ride, and since I have your landline number, I figured you should be home by now, so I called to check on you. I didn't expect it was your dad who answered the phone. I hope I didn't cause you any trouble?"
Ji Wanmei almost instinctively breathed a sigh of relief.
For a moment, she was genuinely worried that it was Lei Tingjun calling.
"Senior Brother Lu, my journey has been quite smooth," Ji Wanmei said casually. Turning her head, she saw that her father was pretending to be busy on the sofa, but was actually secretly eavesdropping on her phone call.
Ji Wanmei replied, "Thank you for your concern. I'm going to start cooking for my dad right now, so I won't talk to you anymore. I'll contact you again later."
"Goodbye, that's all!"
After Ji Wanmei finished speaking, she quickly hung up the phone.
We must not give her father any chance to eavesdrop.
After Ji Wanmei hung up the phone, Ji Xingguo came over with a serious expression, like a homeroom teacher checking students' homework.
"Who is this Lu Zhuoxuan? What's your relationship with him? Why would he call you?" Ji Xingguo asked ambiguously.
Ji Wanmei said obediently, "Well, the grandson of Grandma Song, who taught me Shu embroidery, whom I told you about before, is also studying at our school, but he's not in the same major as me, and I'm not very familiar with him."
Ji Xingguo remained unmoved: "I asked what his relationship is with you, not what his relationship is with Grandma Song."
"We're just ordinary classmates," Ji Wanmei said helplessly.
Ji Xingguo frowned: "If we're just ordinary classmates, how come he has our home phone number? And how does he know when you get home and call you right on time?"
Ji Wan frowned deeply; how could she know why Lu Zhuoxuan had called?
"As I just told you, his grandmother is having her birthday celebration in the first month of the lunar calendar, and she invited me. But I couldn't find where Grandma Song's house was. So Senior Brother Lu gave me their phone number and told me to call him when I got there so he could come pick me up."
"And that's how I got the new phone number."
“I wasn’t really familiar with him before; I only got to know him because of Grandma Song.”
Upon hearing this, Ji Xingguo said very seriously, "Meimei, if you're really dating this Senior Brother Lu, you don't need to hide it from your father. Tell me honestly, what kind of person is he? What do your parents do? Where are you from? What did you study?"
“You told your father, so he can help you check him out. You have to look at a man to see if he’s a good one.”
Ji Wanmei pouted: "Didn't you previously plan for me to go on a blind date with Yang Zhiping? I've never seen you have such a good eye for men."
Ji Xingguo choked and fell silent.
Ji Wanmei stomped her foot: "Oh my god! My relationship with Lu Zhuoxuan is really not what you think. I would never like him. Besides, I heard that his parents are both officials in Beijing, and his grandmother is the fifth-generation inheritor of Shu embroidery. His family background is very powerful. He wouldn't be interested in me."
Ji Xingguo was just questioning Lu Zhuoxuan, but now, after hearing what Ji Wanmei said, he was immediately displeased.
"What's wrong? Is my daughter any worse than him? He doesn't even want you!"
Ji Wanmei rubbed her forehead: "I was just using an analogy to explain to you that I don't like him, and he wouldn't like me either. He was just being polite and courteous. You're overthinking it."
Ji Xingguo was still skeptical: "Really?"
"It really is, it couldn't be more true." Ji Wanmei was practically swearing an oath to the heavens.
"Okay, Dad believes you." Ji Xingguo then stood up. "Then I'll go cook."
Ji Wanmei finally breathed a sigh of relief.
This time, she truly witnessed just how paranoid and suspicious her father was about her dating life.
Then Lu Zhuoxuan came along. Her family is so well-off, but her father scrutinizes her like a household registration book, asking about her ancestors' backgrounds for three generations.
This incident truly reveals how much Ji Xingguo loves his daughter.
He doesn't expect his daughter to find a rich, powerful, or good-looking partner in the future; he only hopes that the man will know her well and treat her well.
Little did he know that in his past life, he had misjudged the Yang family father and son because he demanded someone he knew inside and out.
They thought that since they had been colleagues for twenty years and lived in the same county, and their families lived close by, their daughter would definitely not suffer after marrying into the family.
But to everyone's surprise, it was this so-called "knowing each other inside and out" that caused the father and daughter to lose everything.
Perhaps influenced by the phone call incident, Ji Xingguo killed the goose exceptionally quickly and fiercely. With a swift stroke, the goose didn't even have time to struggle before it collapsed and lay still.
Ji Wanmei sat at her desk in her bedroom.
Looking out the window, she watched her father sitting in the yard, scalding the goose's skin and plucking its feathers with boiling water, his hands supporting his cheeks as he stared blankly into space. She sighed inwardly.
Even Lu Zhuoxuan was treated so harshly and critically by her father. If she told her father now that she did have a boyfriend, and that her boyfriend was Lei Tingjun.
Ji Wanmei thought that Ji Xingguo would not hesitate to pick up the cleaver he was using to kill the goose, rush out, and settle accounts with Lei Tingjun.
