At this time of day, in rural areas where people live close to nature, the sun is already high in the sky.
Ji Wanmei put on her clothes and shoes, got out of bed, tidied up the messy bedding, and then went downstairs.
"woke up?"
Lei Tingjun was boiling water in the main room when he heard Ji Wanmei's footsteps coming downstairs. He looked up and gazed at her with gentle eyes.
Whether it was her imagination or not, Ji Wanmei felt that there was a hint of tenderness in his eyes when he looked at her.
As he gazed intently at her, Ji Wanmei couldn't help but recall what had happened the night before. She didn't dare to meet his burning eyes, turned her head away, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and softly replied, "Mmm."
"Come and have some hot water. I'll roast some sweet potatoes for you; they're still warm. You can eat them after you wash up." Seeing her slightly shy expression, Lei Tingjun smiled, his dark eyes sparkling. He then looked away.
Ji Wanmei walked over and picked up the hot water that Lei Tingjun handed her; the water temperature was just right.
After drinking half a cup of hot water, my body felt warm and cozy.
Lei Tingjun had already prepared hot water and towels for Ji Wanmei.
Ji Wanmei actually has a very good sleeping posture.
But for some reason last night, a wisp of hair on her forehead stuck up and flew to her cheek, looking rather cute.
There was no mirror in Lei Tingjun's hometown, so Ji Wanmei didn't notice it when she was washing her face and combing her hair. She didn't even realize that a strand of hair had stuck up after combing her hair for a long time.
Lei Tingjun stood opposite her, silent, his deep-set eyes smiling as he looked at her.
Ji Wanmei was quite embarrassed and annoyed by his gaze. She glared at him and said, "Why are you always staring at me like that!"
Lei Tingjun reached out, dipped his hand in the water, and stroked her cheek with his finger, smoothing down a stray strand of hair. He then looked her over for a while and said, "So this is how cute my Meimei looks when she wakes up in the morning."
Ji Wanmei pinched his ear, giving him a reproachful yet charming look: "So Lei Tingjun is quite the sweet talker after opening his heart. I used to think you were a blockhead who wasn't good with words."
“I’m not good with words.” Lei Tingjun lowered his head and rubbed her nose. “But every word I say to you comes from the bottom of my heart.”
The way he looked at her reminded Ji Wanmei of that dark moment last night.
I felt as if I was infected by his heat, and just like now, my whole face was steaming hot.
She didn't know what to do; she was just acting on instinct.
Lei Tingjun frowned, his eyes tightly closed, his teeth clenched, his head buried in her hair, his muffled breathing in her ear.
She could feel his trembling and excitement.
Ji Wanmei's face turned bright red at that moment, but luckily she blew out the candles so he couldn't see it.
Lei Tingjun was tormented by her chaotic movements. He reached out and grabbed her hand, then lowered his head and planted a series of wet, hot kisses on the back of her ear.
"Meimei, Meimei..."
Just as Ji Wanmei felt dizzy from his kiss, Lei Tingjun's shoulder muscles suddenly tensed, and he gripped Ji Wanmei's hand tightly, sweating profusely.
Later... Ji Wanmei only remembered that he took off his sweat-soaked clothes and wiped her hands haphazardly.
As she thought about it, Ji Wanmei felt her face suddenly burning again.
"Alright, I'm hungry." Ji Wanmei blushed and pushed him away, then ran to the brazier and sat down without looking at him.
Lei Tingjun seemed to be thinking of something, his deep black eyes darkened, and he lowered his head to clear his throat.
He dug out the roasted sweet potatoes with a twig, blew off the charcoal ash, and then carefully peeled off the skin.
He left a small portion that could be held by hand, then wrapped it in a tissue and handed it to Ji Wanmei: "Be careful, it's hot."
Ji Wanmei took the roasted sweet potato and took a small bite.
Sweet potatoes roasted over charcoal are sweet and sandy, soft and melt-in-your-mouth.
"Is it good?" Lei Tingjun asked.
"Mmm, it's delicious, very sweet." Ji Wanmei smiled at him.
“That’s not enough, there’s more here.” Lei Tingjun pointed to the brazier.
"Have you eaten?" Ji Wanmei asked him.
“I’m not very hungry, so I ate one. Later I’ll take you up the mountain to pick wild mushrooms and dig for wild vegetables. If we’re lucky, we might even catch a wild rabbit for you.”
Ji Wanmei has a small appetite. One sweet potato weighs at least half a pound. After eating one, she felt a little full. She also drank half a cup of warm water, which was about enough for breakfast.
Lei Tingjun quickly ate the remaining sweet potato.
After finishing their meal, they began packing their belongings, taking sickles and small hoes, and carrying bamboo baskets on their backs, to go into the mountains to play.
As they entered the mountains along the winding mountain path, Ji Wanmei found everything new and fascinating.
"What are those bright red wild fruits growing on that vine?" she asked, pointing to the wild fruits by the roadside.
“These are wild strawberries, you can eat them too.” Lei Tingjun picked the reddest one, blew off the dew, handed one to Ji Wanmei, and then picked another for himself.
He put it in his mouth and chewed it: "It's sweet and sour. When I was little, my grandma would often pick these wild strawberries for me to eat."
"Then I'll try it." Ji Wanmei put the fruit called wild strawberry into her mouth, and it did indeed taste sweet and sour.
“They’re quite delicious.” Ji Wanmei casually plucked a leaf from the roadside. “Let’s pick some of these wild strawberries and go up the mountain to eat them.”
Lei Tingjun grew up in the mountains, so he was naturally not surprised by these wild fruits. However, Ji Wanmei had never seen them before and found them novel and interesting, so he picked some for her and wrapped them in leaves.
The two continued walking up the mountain.
