Chapter Twenty-Eight
Ji Wanmei composed herself, annoyed at her own lack of ambition.
She got teary-eyed over such a small thing; she's really regressing as she gets older.
She smiled at Lei Tingjun: "I'm fine. I'll go get your review books. Once you have them, hurry back. It won't be good if someone sees you later."
After all, Lei Tingjun wasn't from this compound, and his presence here would arouse suspicion from the surrounding neighbors. Moreover, he and his brothers had recently been in the limelight.
It's better to keep a low profile.
Lei Tingjun breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her finally smile.
Ji Wanmei returned to her room and took out all the thick reference books she had used for her college entrance exam review from her desk, as well as all the subject notes she had made.
Anyway, she won't need these books after she goes to university in the provincial capital.
It would be better to give it to Lei Tingjun; it might be of some help to him.
The stack of books and notes was quite heavy. As Ji Wanmei left the courtyard, Lei Tingjun saw her struggling to carry the stack of books and quickly came forward to greet her: "Let me help you."
When he reached out to take the book, his large hands inevitably brushed against the back of Ji Wanmei's hands.
Ji Wanmei quickly pulled back, her fingertips gently brushing against Lei Tingjun's palm.
Lei Tingjun felt a tingling sensation slide through his palm, almost causing him to lose control of the stack of books.
Both of them felt a little awkward. Ji Wanmei lowered her head and tucked a stray hair behind her ear, while Lei Tingjun looked away and coughed.
"Then...then I'll head back now?"
Having already eaten the noodles and taken the books, Lei Tingjun couldn't find any excuse to stay any longer.
Ji Wanmei nodded gently: "Okay, let's go back."
"Regarding Zuo Quangui's matter... if my dad intends to deal with it severely, I can't really say anything for you, otherwise he'll dislike you even more. I think the best way is for you to take the brother who beat him up and go to my dad to write a guarantee and pledge your loyalty. That way, you might be able to get leniency from him."
Ji Wanmei knows her father better than anyone else.
Although he usually spoils me, when it comes to matters of principle, no one can persuade him.
A principle is a principle, and no one can break it.
People from that era and background were just that rigid and traditional.
Therefore, if Ji Xingguo were to handle the matter impartially, and Ji Wanmei were to plead for him, it would only fuel Ji Xingguo's resentment towards Lei Tingjun.
If that happens, and she really starts dating Lei Tingjun in the future, wouldn't that make it impossible for him to get past her father?
After much thought, Ji Wanmei felt that Lei Tingjun taking the initiative to admit his mistake was actually a good solution.
Lei Tingjun nodded and said, "Okay, I'll go back first and find out the attitude from above. If it really doesn't work, I'll do as you say."
He obeyed Ji Wanmei's every word.
Lei Tingjun carried the books and walked out of the courtyard.
Thinking of the fifty yuan from earlier, Ji Wanmei called out to him again: "By the way, I'm planning to open a general store in the county with my friend. I'll consider your fifty yuan as your sponsorship fee."
Lei Tingjun turned around and asked in surprise, "You're going to open a general store in the county?"
"Weren't you going to university in the provincial capital? Aren't you going to quit your studies?" he asked in a flurry.
Seeing that he was even more anxious than she was, Ji Wanmei said, "Of course I will continue my studies, but I also plan to keep the shop open. My friend has already dropped out of school and was originally planning to work in a factory, but I hope she can come and do some business with me. If it works out, she will be in charge of looking after the shop in the county. I will come back to visit during my vacation."
Lei Tingjun pondered for a moment: "Have you found a shop yet?"
Ji Wanmei shook her head: "Not yet. Yesterday we went to the county center to see if there were any suitable shops, but we couldn't find any after looking around for a long time. I plan to go and look around again today."
Lei Tingjun thought for a moment and said, "Leave this to me. I have many friends who have connections. I will help you find the most suitable shop."
“That works too. You can inquire about it for me, and I'll go check it out myself.” Ji Wanmei nodded.
"Okay, I'll come find you again if I need anything." Lei Tingjun then left, turning back every few steps.
"Mm." Ji Wanmei stood at the gate of the courtyard, holding onto the railing, watching Lei Tingjun leave.
She watched his tall, upright figure disappear into the alleyway before turning back into the courtyard.
Over the past few days, although she hadn't had much contact with Lei Tingjun, Ji Wanmei could still clearly sense that he was a man who was rough on the outside but meticulous on the inside.
He was very attentive to her feelings in many ways.
Whenever he sensed that she didn't like it or was even slightly unhappy, he would immediately adjust and change himself.
In short, he is someone who is willing to change his bad habits for her sake.
However, at this moment, Ji Wanmei still hadn't completely let go of her testing attitude.
After all, Yang Zhiping initially pretended to be a gentleman, always gentle and polite, and the merman couldn't find any fault with him. But once they got married, his true colors were revealed.
But the good thing about Lei Tingjun is that he is genuine, natural, and doesn't pretend.
Although at first glance, he seems to have all sorts of flaws, such as a love of smoking, a thuggish manner, roughness, a penchant for violence, a bad temper, and an impatient nature.
But when he was with Ji Wanmei, if he wanted to smoke, Ji Wanmei would wrinkle her nose and he would stop; she liked cleanliness, so even if he was in a hurry to see her, he would wash his face and hands first; she didn't like impulsiveness and a bad temper, so he spoke calmly and listened to her in everything; she didn't like him fighting, so he really didn't go.
No matter how unruly and untamed the Thunder Army may be, Ji Wanmei could completely control him.
This is what makes Ji Wanmei feel good.
Unlike Yang Zhiping, who was a hypocrite, Yang Zhiping deliberately pretended to be the gentleman that Ji Wanmei liked, first gaining her trust, and then revealing his true colors when she completely trusted him.
In comparison, people like Yang Zhiping seem much more terrifying.
Ji Wanmei felt that getting along with Lei Tingjun was natural, easy, and comfortable.
Entering the kitchen, Ji Wanmei saw that the dishes and chopsticks were washed clean and neatly placed in the cabinets. The pot for cooking noodles was also washed clean, and even the water on the stove was wiped clean.
The dishcloth was washed clean and draped next to the sink, so she didn't need to tidy it up again.
Ji Wanmei smiled silently.
It seems that Lei Tingjun is also quite good at his job.
She was right; he was indeed a man with a rugged exterior but a meticulous heart.
