Chapter 333
Ji Wanmei hesitated for a moment, then turned and walked out.
But as she reached the door, she emphasized, "Dad, please talk this out. I'm serious about this."
“I know. You go out first and call him in.” Ji Xingguo said seriously, without looking at her.
Ji Wanmei opened the bookstore door and looked up to see Lei Tingjun still standing in the same position, under the scorching sun, with some sweat on his forehead, but his face and expression were very calm.
Hearing the sound, Lei Tingjun looked up at Ji Wanmei.
His eyes revealed undisguised worry and inquiry.
Ji Wanmei walked over, took out a silk handkerchief from her pocket, and gently wiped his sweat. She said, "Don't worry, I'm fine. My dad is just having a hard time accepting it right now. As long as we show him our true feelings for each other, he will accept us."
Lei Tingjun grasped Ji Wanmei's hand, his eyes deep, his throat tightening, but he remained silent.
Ji Wanmei added, "If, and I mean if, even if Dad disagrees, I won't let his opinion sway my resolve. Lei Tingjun, do you understand?"
Lei Tingjun understood.
How could he not understand?
Ji Wanmei had told him about her mother's youth, and he believed without hesitation that Ji Wanmei, who also possessed such tenacity and persistence, would disregard everything and risk everything for the people and things she believed in.
This is her, this is Ji Wanmei.
"Meimei, no matter what, I will definitely make your father approve of me," Lei Tingjun said to Ji Wanmei.
Then he raised his head, his gaze resolute as he stared straight at the door, and strode inside.
The shop door closed from the inside again.
Ji Wanmei was still a little worried. She found a shady spot under a tree to sit down, her mind racing with random thoughts.
Inside the house.
The two men, one old and one young, faced each other in silence, the atmosphere tense.
Lei Tingjun spoke first: "Director Ji, my feelings for Meimei are genuine. I hope you can give me a chance."
His tone was sincere, and his gaze was firm.
Ji Xingguo slowly raised his eyelids, frowned, and scrutinized Lei Tingjun with a sharp gaze for a long time before saying, "When did you start getting close to my daughter?"
Lei Tingjun paused for a moment, then replied, "It's attraction, not approach."
"To me, she is like a phototropic plant, with an instinctive attraction to sunlight."
Ji Xingguo said sternly, "Don't give me that nonsense. I'm asking you, did you start approaching her when you were still at the Dongfang Factory, or after she came to Huadong University?"
Lei Tingjun said, "When I fell in love with her at the Dongfang Factory, she didn't even know I existed. I, Lei Tingjun, am aware of my own limitations. She is the apple of your eye, Director Ji, while I am just a lowly workshop worker in the factory."
When Ji Xingguo heard Lei Tingjun admit that he had been eyeing his daughter since they were at the Dongfang Factory in Pingquan County, he was even more furious with Lei Tingjun.
I can't stand him no matter what I look at.
Ji Xingguo then asked, "So, back then, when you deliberately injured Deputy Factory Director Yang and his son because of the fight between Sun Xiaojun and Zuo Quangui, and that's how you got me to fire you, that was also intentional?"
"You deliberately left the Dongfang Factory and followed her here when she came to Huadong University?"
Lei Tingjun said helplessly, "Director Ji, it seems you now know why I left Dongfang Factory. Do you think the coincidence of that incident can be connected with the timing of Meimei taking the college entrance exam? I'm not a fortune teller, I can't predict such a coincidence."
"There's just one thing: I had already decided to leave. If I stayed at the Dongfang Factory, I might still be just a lowly worker even after a few years. I could only make something of myself by venturing out into the world. If I wanted to be with her, I couldn't be content to remain an ordinary worker forever."
"I believe that as her father, you would not want to marry your daughter to a man with no future."
Ji Xingguo snorted coldly: "You make it sound nice."
Lei Tingjun lowered his head silently; he rarely bowed his head to anyone.
Whether it was his childhood experiences or his adult life, he always faced whatever came his way and resolved it head-on.
But clearly, he couldn't confront Ji Wanmei's father's questions head-on.
Because Lei Tingjun did indeed harbor ulterior motives and desires towards Ji Wanmei.
He did intentionally approach her, making his presence known to her time and time again, deliberately bumping into her again and again, and even secretly climbing over her house wall when Ji Xingguo was not home.
Ji Xingguo questioned him about when he had started getting close to Ji Wanmei.
Ji Xingguo was also a man; he was young once too, and he once pursued the girl he loved.
He understood, of course, that if a man truly liked a girl, he couldn't resist getting close to her.
Although Ji Xingguo carried preconceived prejudices, he was still a middle-aged man with rich experience. As soon as he opened his mouth, he asked about Lei Tingjun's deepest secrets.
That's right.
Even when Lei Tingjun was still an ordinary worker at the Oriental Factory, he never believed that there was no possibility between him and Ji Wanmei.
He secretly saved up money to buy that crystal hair clip and carried it with him. Every time he found out when Ji Wanmei went to the factory, he and his brothers would squat at the factory gate, smoking and waiting for her.
It wasn't just because he wanted to catch a glimpse of her from afar.
