Chapter 335
Lei Tingjun walked out of the bookstore and saw Ji Wanmei still sitting under the shade of a tree not far away.
They were only a dozen steps apart, but from that moment on, it felt as if a long period of two years had separated them.
After not seeing her for two years, Lei Tingjun asked himself if he could really hold back.
Lei Tingjun's throat tightened, and a dark, turbulent emotion surged in his eyes.
Ji Xingguo followed him out from behind, stood behind him and looked at him, and reminded him in a deep voice: "Go up and say hello to her, and then you leave."
Lei Tingjun lowered his eyelids, his thick eyelashes concealing the turbulent emotions in his eyes.
Hearing footsteps, Ji Wanmei turned around and saw Lei Tingjun. She immediately stood up and walked quickly towards him, her eyes full of worry: "How are you? Did my dad give you any trouble? What did he say to you?"
Lei Tingjun stared intently at her, shook his head, and said in a hoarse voice, "It's nothing."
"My dad really didn't make things difficult for you?" Ji Wanmei felt that this was not like her father's usual behavior. Knowing her father as she did, she knew he would definitely lose his temper.
Ji Wanmei had even thought about how she would deal with it if her father really tried to make things difficult for them or opposed their relationship.
Lei Tingjun held Ji Wanmei's hand: "Meimei, let's get married after you graduate, okay?"
Ji Wanmei was taken aback, and a smile slowly appeared in her eyes, as soft and bright as if scattered with starlight: "Are you proposing to me?"
"Hmm, Meimei, can you wait for me for two years?" Lei Tingjun said in a hoarse voice. "After two years, I will come to marry you, okay? Meimei, will you marry me?"
Before Ji Wanmei could answer, Ji Xingguo walked out of the bookstore, coughed heavily as a warning, and glared sternly at Lei Tingjun.
Lei Tingjun knew that Ji Xingguo was urging him to leave and warning him not to say anything more to Ji Wanmei.
So he gripped Ji Wanmei's hand tightly and said urgently, "Meimei, I love you. No matter what happens, no matter what I do, just remember, I, Lei Tingjun, will always love you and will never leave you. Wait for me, wait for me to come find you."
Ji Xingguo watched as Lei Tingjun walked up to his daughter and whispered to her. His tolerance had reached its limit. He strode over and pulled Ji Wanmei over, saying, "Come here, I have something to ask you."
"Dad!" Ji Wanmei was pulled into the store by her father, and turned to look at Lei Tingjun.
"Lei Tingjun, are you going back?" she asked.
Lei Tingjun stood at the bottom of the steps, gazing intently at Ji Wanmei.
His lips moved silently, his eyes were dark, and he looked at her and said, "I love you, wait for me."
His eyes looked filled with an unspeakable sadness and loneliness, like those of an abandoned beast.
Ji Wanmei didn't know why she had such a thought at that moment.
But she longed to shake off her father's hand, rush over and give him a hug, to tell him that she would not leave him.
Ji Wanmei was taken aback, and in that moment of hesitation, Ji Xingguo pulled her into the shop.
The door was closed again.
Lei Tingjun lowered his eyes and stood motionless for several minutes. After a long while, he looked up at the bright sun.
Finally, he took a step and walked towards the end of the long street.
After closing the shop door, Ji Xingguo looked at his daughter with a helpless expression and said, "I've already sent Lei Tingjun away. From now on, you two shouldn't see each other for the time being."
Ji Wanmei frowned: "Dad, you can't do this, I won't agree!"
“You have to agree, whether you like it or not.” Ji Xingguo made the final decision. “Lei Tingjun has already agreed that he won’t come looking for you again before you graduate. This is a test I’m giving him. If you don’t see each other for the next two years and each of you finishes your studies and careers well, then after two years, when you’ve both matured a bit, if you’re still willing to be with him then, Dad will agree. But definitely not now.”
Finally, Ji Xingguo said firmly, "If you don't agree, I'll send you abroad right now to your aunt's place."
Ji Wanmei was furious and said angrily, "Ji Xingguo! You have the mentality of a patriarch from feudal society! What right do you have to arrange my future!"
“Meimei, I’m your father. Your mother is gone. If I don’t plan for your future, who will?” Ji Xingguo sighed, speaking earnestly, “Even if you blame me, I have to do this. Lei Tingjun is too unpredictable. I really don’t trust you to be with him. If he can’t even withstand the test of two years, how can I trust you to entrust your life to him?”
Ji Wanmei stamped her foot in frustration: "That's why I said you could spend more time with him and get to know him better, then you'd know what kind of person he is, instead of judging him based on hearsay. You've gone too far! Why do you have to use such extreme methods!"
Ji Wanmei didn't want to argue with her father anymore, so she turned around, pushed open the door, and ran out.
But there was no sign of the Thunder Army anywhere.
He has already left.
Ji Wanmei anxiously chased after them, shouting, "Thunder Army! Thunder Army!"
Ji Xingguo followed her out. Seeing his daughter like this, it was impossible for him not to feel sorry for her. He advised, "Alright, alright, if he's really as good as you say, what's two years? He'll definitely wait for you. If you really think he's the only one for you, then wait two years until you graduate before deciding on your future. Wouldn't that be better? Meimei, don't blame your father. I need to carefully consider your options."
Ji Wanmei turned around, her eyes brimming with tears, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall, staring at her father: "Go back, I don't want to talk to you anymore."
"Hey, Meimei, Meimei! Are you just going to leave your dad here like this?" This was the first time Ji Xingguo had ever seen his daughter throw such a tantrum at him.
She was such a cute and obedient little girl when she was little, but she's grown up to be so stubborn.
"Sigh," Ji Xingguo sighed helplessly.
Well, since he's already done this bad thing, he might as well go all the way.
If the test is too simple and doesn't reach a level that would reassure Ji Xingguo to entrust his daughter to him, he will still stop it.
So what if you make some money? In this era of economic reform where every inch of land is precious, how many people have gone into business and become rich overnight, and how many others have taken risks to amass wealth, only to lose everything overnight, ending up behind bars?
Without a sufficiently strong foundation of humanistic qualities, no matter how much wealth one accumulates today, it will all be for naught in the future.
Ji Xingguo thought for a moment, then turned and walked towards Ji Wanmei's school.
He planned to visit Ji Wanmei's close roommate again, I think her name was Zhou Min.
