Lei Tingjun glanced at Ji Wanmei and coughed very seriously.
Ji Wanmei chuckled: "He is quite handsome. I guarantee that when we get back and Ji Xingguo tells him, he'll praise his daughter for her good taste!"
Lei Tingjun couldn't resist Ji Wanmei's witty remarks, but he also loved her clever and mischievous appearance. He looked at her helplessly and said, "As long as your dad doesn't yell at me, I have no other requests."
"Remember, when you get home and see my dad, be proactive and polite. No matter what he says, just talk to him the same way you talk to me. There's no need to flatter him excessively or try to impress him. Just be yourself and let him see you as you are."
Lei Tingjun listened and nodded.
"My dad dislikes people who are pretentious or showy. But since you're visiting as my girlfriend, he'll definitely nitpick about the details. Just know that he's only doing this to save face. Don't take it to heart."
"Okay, I understand." Lei Tingjun kept it all in mind.
Ji Wanmei thought for a moment and then said, "Also, my dad likes to have a drink or two. He used to be a good drinker when he was younger, but he developed high blood pressure in recent years, so I don't allow him to drink much anymore. However, he firmly believes that one's drinking habits are a reflection of one's character, so he'll often test your drinking capacity at meals. When we get home, if he asks you to drink, just let him have his way. He takes a sip, and you take a sip. When you're almost six or seven points drunk, stop and pretend you're drunk."
As they went down the stairs, Lei Tingjun reached out and took Ji Wanmei's hand.
Ji Wanmei took his arm affectionately and continued, "He'll think you're drunk, so he'll take the opportunity to ask you some tricky questions. You need to answer carefully then. Don't give him a chance to come back and tell me about you."
She said helplessly, "You know how stubborn he is. If he finds one or two minor things to make a big deal out of, he'll nag me about you for ages."
Lei Tingjun chuckled softly twice. "Meimei, is this how you and your dad usually interact at home?"
“Yeah, he’s no match for me now!” She tilted her head and blinked.
Lei Tingjun has no relatives. He didn't know that he could have this kind of relationship with his parents and family.
It struck him as novel and something he longed for.
Lei Tingjun longs for a home, a home he can build with Ji Wanmei.
After going downstairs and walking to the car, Ji Wanmei opened the trunk and let Lei Tingjun put the things he had brought down inside.
There were so many things. Besides the supplements that A-Qiang had brought over for Zhu Shuangyan to take back, there were also things that Lei Tingjun had bought for Ji Wanmei's father.
Food, clothing, daily necessities, supplements, and fine wine filled the trunk and back seats.
Ji Wanmei originally didn't want Lei Tingjun to buy so many, but Lei Tingjun insisted.
It was his first time visiting his future father-in-law's house, and given his relationship with Ji Xingguo, he wouldn't feel at ease if he didn't bring a substantial gift.
Seeing how serious he was about it, Ji Wanmei decided to let him make the arrangements himself.
The two got into the car and set off for Pingquan County.
The new car was faster than the pickup truck, and they arrived in Pingquan in just over two hours.
When we arrived, it was around 11 a.m.
Ji Wanmei pointed the way, instructing Lei Tingjun to drive the car directly into the back gate of the compound, as it was closer from there. They had far too much stuff, and carrying it around would be too much trouble.
As soon as she got out of the car, Ji Wanmei could clearly feel that Lei Tingjun tensed up.
She moved closer to him, stood on tiptoe, and gently kissed his cheek: "Comrade Lei Tingjun, don't be so nervous, okay? It's just inviting you to our home for a meal, not sending you to the battlefield. Relax and be natural."
For Lei Tingjun, Ji Wanmei was always the best comfort.
Under her gentle reassurance, he relaxed and calmed down, and smiled at her. "Let's go in."
The two men, each carrying several boxes, walked towards the Ji family compound.
Before she even stepped inside, Ji Wanmei could smell the aroma of soup wafting from the kitchen window.
In a daze, Lei Tingjun recalled that four years ago, he was still a reckless and impetuous young man who, while Ji Xingguo was not at home, secretly climbed over the wall to find Ji Wanmei.
It was in that kitchen that Ji Wanmei cooked him a bowl of noodles for the first time.
That bowl of noodles remains the most delicious and fragrant bowl of noodles Lei Tingjun has ever eaten in his life.
Now, he can finally openly and legitimately step into this courtyard as Ji Wanmei's boyfriend.
Ji Wanmei reached out and took his arm, exchanging a smile with him.
Lei Tingjun followed Ji Wanmei over. She pushed open the gate to the courtyard and called out with a smile, "Dad, we're back!"
