Chapter Ninety-Four
Ji Wanmei and Luo Chunyan returned to the guesthouse, where Officer Li was already waiting for them at the door.
Upon seeing Ji Wanmei, Officer Li hurriedly came forward: "Miss Ji, if you hadn't come back soon, I would have gone to the market to look for you."
"I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, Officer Li," Ji Wanmei said politely with a smile.
"We've finished everything and are now going back to our room to pack our luggage. Could you please check us out, Officer Li?"
Officer Li nodded, turned and walked towards the front desk: "Okay, I'll go take care of the formalities, and then I'll wait for you downstairs."
Once upstairs, Luo Chunyan said to Ji Wanmei, "I've figured it out. Officer Li is all talk and no action. He keeps saying he's coming to see us, that he'll be waiting for us downstairs!"
"And what happened? Well, we came back late yesterday and he didn't come looking for us. We came back late today and he's still sitting in the guesthouse by himself."
"Knowing we have a lot of stuff, they didn't even offer to help carry it. Ugh, really!"
In this respect, even Officer Li is inferior to Lei Tingjun.
Even if Lei Tingjun was just trying to curry favor with Ji Wanmei, he at least put in real effort and did something practical.
Ji Wanmei hadn't really expected that Officer Li could be of any help.
His only purpose was to soothe her father's heart, which was filled with worry for his daughter.
Besides, Ji Wanmei never intended to come with Secretary Li in the first place.
She wanted to be with Luo Chunyan; one of them was experienced, and the other was responsive, so the two of them together were just as good as a man.
Ji Wanmei smiled and shook her head, saying softly, "Alright, alright, just stop complaining about him. He came here on a business trip, not as a laborer we hired."
If you don't place your expectations on people you shouldn't have in the first place, how can you expect disappointment?
After returning to her room, Ji Wanmei packed some of her belongings into a small suitcase.
When I arrived, my suitcase was quite full because it was filled with bags of eggs and other dry food.
Now that it's free, we can put some things in.
Once it's stuffed full, it does become quite heavy, probably weighing ten or twenty kilograms.
Ji Wanmei packed away the sailor shirt she had washed and dried the night before, and put it into a box. She also packed away her toiletries.
She switched to wearing the more comfortable white mesh shoes because her feet felt uncomfortable and stuffy after a 20-plus-hour train ride.
On the other hand, Luo Chunyan also had a very fruitful trip to Zhejiang.
When she arrived, her black duffel bag was almost full.
This morning, among the goods that Ji Wanmei brought in, Luo Chunyan paid for three portions of each item to keep for herself.
Most of the items were for women, so she naturally only brought them for herself, her mother, and her sister.
But when she remembered the five yuan her father had silently handed her while smoking a cigarette before she left, Luo Chunyan thought for a moment and decided to bring something back for her father as well.
Luo Chunyan took a fancy to a belt.
Men of this era, especially middle-aged men, would wear a belt when wearing dress pants and a shirt.
A belt is the perfect gift for your dad.
But everyone in the family of five brought a gift except for the youngest brother.
Although Luo Chunyan didn't particularly like her spoiled brat brother, she thought that once they got home, he would definitely cry and make a fuss if he had nothing to eat.
Her mother would scold her for being immature, so Luo Chunyan just bought a child's toy casually.
By stuffing all sorts of odds and ends into the bag, it was surprisingly full.
"Meimei, I'm all packed."
Ji Wanmei naturally didn't leave empty-handed.
Ji Xingguo doted on her so much, and since he had finally come all the way to Zhejiang, she naturally brought a gift back for her father as well.
Her father often reviewed documents and read newspapers. As he got older, his eyesight deteriorated, and he had to wear glasses to see the documents clearly.
Ji Wanmei remembered that her father's reading glasses were a bit old, and the heavy black frames pressed against his nose, making them uncomfortable to wear for a long time, and they also made him look older.
Actually, Ji Wanmei's father was quite a handsome man when he was young.
Otherwise, how could he and Ji Wanmei's mother have given birth to such a stunning beauty as Ji Wanmei?
Ji Wanmei bought her father a new pair of reading glasses with silver frames, which looked quite high-end and sophisticated.
It cost twenty-five yuan.
Ji Wanmei had originally wanted to buy her dad a fountain pen, but he already had quite a few in his study, and many people usually gave him these kinds of things as gifts, so she didn't buy one.
Finally, she went and bought a white shirt.
As my father got older, he stopped buying himself new clothes.
They just kept wearing the old clothes in the closet, and the factory often issued uniforms, so Xingguo rarely bought any for himself at his age, but often bought them for Ji Wanmei instead.
However, Ji Wanmei thought that given her father's status, he often had to meet with leaders from the city and province, and it wouldn't look presentable for him to always wear an old shirt, so she bought a new one and brought it back to him.
In addition, Ji Wanmei secretly bought another small item.
But she hasn't decided whether or not to give it to him.
After they finished packing their things, they checked out of the room and went down to the guesthouse.
Seeing that Ji Wanmei was struggling to lift the suitcase, Luo Chunyan took it from her and said, "Give it to me, I'm strong, I'll carry it."
Seeing Luo Chunyan carrying two bags by herself, Ji Wanmei was secretly annoyed by her own overly delicate constitution. She had no choice but to take Luo Chunyan's not-so-heavy bag and say, "Then let me carry yours."
The two took turns carrying it, and smiled at each other.
After going downstairs, Officer Li saw Ji Wanmei carrying a black duffel bag and stepped forward politely, saying, "Miss Ji, let me help you with this."
Luo Chunyan, standing to the side, said with a half-smile, "Officer Li, look closely, this suitcase belongs to Meimei. That black bag is mine."
Officer Li gave an awkward smile and quickly said, "That's true, the suitcase is quite heavy, and you girls can't carry it. Let me carry it."
Luo Chunyan gave Ji Wanmei a look that said, "I knew it, this Li clerk is all talk and no action."
Ji Wanmei smiled without saying anything, only saying, "Then I'll have to trouble Officer Li."
“No trouble at all.” Officer Li carried the suitcase and walked forward, saying, “Miss Ji, would you like to have a meal in the city center here before going to the train station, or would you like to go directly to the train station and find a place to eat there?”
It's not even 1 a.m. yet, and there are still more than three hours until their train departs.
There's plenty of time to have lunch.
"Let's eat here," Ji Wanmei said. "We can also find a grocery store and buy some things to take with us on the train."
