Chapter Ninety-Six
The train waiting hall was packed with people.
The rows of rusty iron chairs were all occupied by people.
The migrant workers waiting for the train carried large and small bags, their faces filled with anticipation and longing for the future, as well as boundless confusion.
The original white walls of the hall have turned slightly yellow over time, and large banners with slogans such as "Emancipate the mind, reform and open up, revitalize the country through science and education" and "Family planning is the top priority after reform and opening up" are still pasted on them.
Several ceiling fans hung from the lobby ceiling, creaking and groaning as they whirred.
It was just that there were too many people waiting for the train, making it noisy and stuffy in the whole hall, and the little breeze couldn't solve the problem at all.
"Meimei, the car won't be here for another hour. Let's find a place to sit and wait for a while." Luo Chunyan was also sweating profusely from the heat.
“Okay.” Ji Wanmei replied, while searching the hall for Lei Tingjun’s figure with her eyes.
But there were just too many people, and most of them were wearing dark clothes. They were so densely packed that it was impossible to spot them at a glance.
Li, the cadre, was so enraged by the crowd of migrant workers that his glasses were almost knocked askew.
He wanted to curse, but considering his status, he felt it was undignified and beneath him to curse in public, so he could only suppress his anger with a livid face.
Taking advantage of her short stature, Luo Chunyan nimbly squeezed through the crowd and finally found an empty seat in a corner. She quickly waved to Ji Wanmei, "Meimei, come sit here!"
Ji Wanmei squeezed through the crowd with difficulty, and seeing that there was only one empty seat, she said, "You sit down. I'll stand for a while. Anyway, once we get on the train, we'll be sitting for over twenty hours."
Luo Chunyan was afraid that if they didn't sit down first, someone else would take their seats, so she quickly plopped down and said, "Then we'll each sit for a while. Standing and waiting will tire our legs. We mainly want to find a place to put our things down."
Officer Li squeezed through the crowd, and seeing that there were no seats left, he wiped the sweat from his brow, put Ji Wanmei's suitcase on the ground, and, adjusting his glasses, looked around for an empty seat.
Luo Chunyan then said, "Don't bother looking for Officer Li. There are so many people in the hall, there are no seats left. If you're tired of standing, I'll give you my seat, you can sit down. Neither of us is tired."
Luo Chunyan has a knack for making sarcastic remarks.
Li, the clerk, could tell that they were just making fun of him.
The two young girls said they weren't tired, but he, a man, was so tired he wanted to sit down immediately.
Besides, the person on the other end is Director Ji's daughter, who is about to return to Pingquan County. Once Ji Wanmei goes back, she can just say a few good words to her father, and then Officer Li's trip won't be in vain.
Li, the clerk, quickly smiled and said to Ji Wanmei, "I'm not tired, I'll be getting on the bus soon. Miss Ji, please have a seat."
Ji Wanmei also said no.
But where is the Thunder Army?
At this moment, Lei Tingjun was sleeping on a bench near the entrance.
That's right, he was lying alone on a three-seater bench, sleeping.
Because he arrived early, and there were many more people arriving at the platform on time, there were more empty seats.
Bored while waiting, he simply found an empty chair near the entrance, where he could easily see Ji Wanmei and the others coming in, and lay down on it.
He put his two size 45 low-cut leather boots on the chair legs, put his arms behind his head, and closed his eyes for a while.
More people came in after that, and seeing that Lei Tingjun was taking up three seats by himself, they didn't dare to wake him up.
Around 3:30, Lei Tingjun suddenly opened his eyes and woke up.
It was as if there was a fixed alarm clock inside his body; he suddenly woke up at 3:30.
Lei Tingjun sat up, his dark, calm eyes scanning the bustling waiting hall.
Suddenly, his gaze fixed in a certain direction, and a glint of light flashed deep in his eyes.
"Ji Wanmei!"
Lei Tingjun shouted.
His voice was deep and resonant, yet also high-pitched and full of emotion, possessing a penetrating power that was both intense and magnetic.
The entire waiting hall fell silent for a moment after that shout.
Everyone around Lei Tingjun looked at him with confusion, wondering what this big guy was up to.
Ji Wanmei, who was hiding in the corner, heard Lei Tingjun's voice, turned around abruptly, and looked in the direction from which the voice came—
Luo Chunyan and Officer Li also stood up at the same time and looked back.
Ji Wanmei saw that Lei Tingjun was standing at the exit of the platform, separated by a vast, sea-like crowd.
His tall stature made him stand out from the crowd, like a crane among chickens.
He gazed at her intently from afar, his eyes deep and unwavering, and shouted her name without reservation.
Ji Wanmei smiled sweetly, then raised her hand and waved happily at him.
Officer Li was stunned: "That's not..."
Isn't that the Thunder Army?
Without saying a word, Lei Tingjun parted the crowd and strode towards Ji Wanmei.
Ji Wanmei stood still, a bright smile on her face, waiting for him to come to her.
Wherever the Thunder Army passed, the crowds on both sides parted automatically, like water being parted by boats, making way for him.
He braved the thorns and brambles, traversing crowds, and finally arrived before Ji Wanmei.
Ji Wanmei looked up at him, her bright and beautiful eyes sparkling. "How long have you been waiting here?"
"Not long." Of course, Lei Tingjun wouldn't tell Ji Wanmei that he had already taken a nap at the train station while waiting for her.
