Chapter 256 really does have that feeling of a young couple living together.

Chapter 256

"Shh, Meimei, look." Lei Tingjun suddenly grabbed Ji Wanmei and pointed to the jungle opposite.

Ji Wanmei looked over carefully and saw a furry thing dart past from the patch of green grass.

"What is that?" Ji Wanmei asked nervously.

Lei Tingjun took the net out of the basket and whispered to her, "It's a rabbit."

"Can you catch it?" Ji Wanmei didn't dare to speak too loudly, afraid of scaring the rabbit away, so she only dared to whisper.

"I'll give it a try." Lei Tingjun often went up the mountain to catch rabbits when he was a child. He would also set up traps in the mountains using readily available tools. This was a piece of cake for him.

"Stand here and don't move." Lei Tingjun took the basket from Ji Wanmei, then held his breath and slowly approached the place where the rabbit had appeared.

Ji Wanmei didn't dare to breathe loudly, watching nervously.

Lei Tingjun moved forward a few steps without making a sound, and then with lightning speed, he leaped forward and pressed down on the basket in his hand as if it were a fishing tool.

That night, the gray rabbit tried to escape, but Thunder Military had already predicted the direction it wanted to run away in.

He pressed the bamboo basket down first, and the rabbit ran right into the basket and was caught by Lei Tingjun.

He flipped the bamboo basket over in an instant, quickly grabbed the rabbit with both hands, then lifted it up by its ears, turned to Ji Wanmei and grinned, "Got it!"

"How are you so amazing!" Ji Wanmei jumped up happily and gave him a thumbs up.

Lei Tingjun casually grabbed a flexible rope from the ground, tied the rabbit's feet together, and then put it in the basket for Ji Wanmei to play with.

Ji Wanmei looked at the little rabbit and reached out to pat its head.

"Be careful, wild rabbits have sharp teeth, don't let them bite you," Lei Tingjun said.

Ji Wanmei then withdrew her hand.

However, the rabbit didn't look very fierce. It was just a little confused, staring with its two round eyes, looking around as if it didn't know why it had been caught and made a pet while it was happily grazing in the bushes.

Lei Tingjun led Ji Wanmei forward, but after a while, he stopped again.

He picked up the hoe and pointed to a dark brown tree root under a rock, saying, "This thing is wild yam."

Ji Wanmei walked over carrying a rabbit and saw Lei Tingjun digging for wild yams.

He dug out a few and said, "Later, we'll take these mountain produce back and make a mountain delicacy soup."

Ji Wanmei protected her rabbit: "You're not allowed to eat my rabbit."

Lei Tingjun said, "I caught this for you to keep as a pet, you won't eat it."

Ji Wanmei smiled happily.

The basket was filled with some mushrooms and a few wild yams, making it a bit heavy to carry. Lei Tingjun said, "I'll carry it; you just hold the rabbit."

Under a large tree in front, there are still traces of Lei Tingjun setting traps here when he was a child.

They used a few tree branches to build a structure, then covered it with a piece of burlap, dug a pit underneath, and sprinkled some soil and moss on top of the pit to disguise the traces.

Sprinkle some broken rice and glutinous rice on the linen. Wild pheasants and other animals that pass by will come here to eat the food. While eating, they will get trapped and fall into the big pit below.

Lei Tingjun took Ji Wanmei over to see.

He said, "This is a trap I set here when I was a teenager. No one else knew about it except me."

As he spoke, he used a branch to lift the burlap sack weighing down the stone on top of the trap—

To everyone's surprise, there was a nest of pheasants at the bottom of this large pit.

A hen and several chicks.

We don't know when they got trapped here.

The old hen had actually hatched chicks in this big pit.

Ji Wanmei was overjoyed: "Wow, there are so many chicks!"

Lei Tingjun was also quite surprised. He glanced at Ji Wanmei and said, "Let's catch them."

He thought for a moment and said, "This old hen is perfect for stewing these mountain delicacies. As for the chicks, we can give them to Uncle Wang and the others so they can raise them. What do you think?"

“Sure,” Ji Wanmei said.

Lei Tingjun nimbly jumped into the pit, and the pheasants inside, seeing someone coming, frantically flapped their wings and tried to run away.

But no one could escape Lei Tingjun's swift movements. He grabbed the hen's wings with one hand, tied them together with dry straw, then caught the chicks and put them in a bamboo basket before jumping ashore.

Ji Wanmei couldn't help but laugh and said, "So your rural life when you were a child was so interesting!"

Lei Tingjun smiled and said, "We were lucky today; we had a good harvest since we came into the mountains."

They caught a wild rabbit, picked up a lot of mushrooms, dug up wild yams, and even found a brood of pheasants in Lei Tingjun's old trap.

This luck is truly unparalleled.

Lei Tingjun shouldered his hoe and slung his bamboo basket over his shoulder: "Let's go, we're going back."

He took Ji Wanmei's hand, and Ji Wanmei was holding her little rabbit in her arms. The two of them started walking down the mountain.

"Are we going to Uncle Wang's house again at noon?" Ji Wanmei asked.

Lei Tingjun could tell from her expression that she didn't really want to bother them anymore.

He then said, “We can light a fire ourselves and cook soup in a pot. But we don’t have many seasonings left at home, except for a little salt. I can pick some wild chili peppers to take back. It might just be a bit simple.”

Ji Wanmei cheered up: "It's okay, I like it this way, it feels like we're having a picnic."
