Mo Yuan's question only ignited Yu Xiu'e's fury, unleashing a torrent of accusations against him. While she might have initially shown some consideration for Lin Xue's status as a new bride, Lin Xue conveniently fled, leaving Mo Yuan alone to face Yu Xiu'e. Having not lashed out in days, Yu Xiu'e could no longer contain herself.
"Look at you young people, getting up before the sun is high in the sky, is that proper? I know you young people haven't seen each other for days, so it's normal to have a lot to talk about and sleep late, but that can't interfere with important matters! Are you all relying on your old bones like your father and me to carry the load? Your father went out early this morning after breakfast to find people to help you with chores, and me, with my old arms and legs, I had to help your brother and brother pack their things. After finally getting them to their destination, you were still in bed when I got home, is that proper?"
Yu Xiue grew increasingly angry as she spoke, but Mo Yuan suddenly blurted out, "Did you oversleep too, brother?"
Yu Xiu'e was taken aback by Mo Yuan's sudden question, but she still answered, "Yes, your older brother got up a little late today."
After saying this, Yu Xiu'e realized she might have said something wrong, because she had just been scolding Mo Yuan for getting up so late. But Yu Xiu'e quickly changed the subject and continued, "But your older brother is different. He's been getting up early to set up his stall lately, and he's under a lot of pressure, so he needs to rest. Besides, he hasn't been idle in the mornings. Although he got up a little late, after I woke them up, they still went to set up their stall quickly, so business wasn't affected much. Look at you, all you do is sleep all day, you don't help with anything at all. Your father has already found people for you, go and check on them in a bit!"
Mo Yuan chuckled to himself upon hearing this. He could tell from his mother's words that his elder brother and sister-in-law had also gotten up late today. Thinking of the reason, he couldn't help but smile. It seemed that his elder brother and sister-in-law had been quite busy last night.
In the past, Yu Xiu'e was always particularly strict with her elder brother, but very lenient with herself. Unexpectedly, today she spoke up for her elder brother and reprimanded her. It seems that Mo Yuan also finds it interesting.
So he couldn't help but retort, "Mom, how can you say that? Besides, I've been busy out there lately, and I finally got home, so naturally I slept soundly and ended up sleeping in late! Sleeping in the bed at home is so much better! Where's Dad? I'll go check on him in a bit!"
Mo Yuan didn't feel wronged, nor did he feel disappointed because Yu Xiu'e never seemed to notice his hard work.
He knew that Yu Xiue loved him just as much, but she had a sharp tongue but a soft heart. She always wanted to nag and give advice on everything, just to show her importance as a mother! Knowing that his mother would be fine after she finished talking, he still chatted with her earnestly!
Hearing that his father, Mo Youshan, had already found someone to help him, and was surprised by how efficient it was, Mo Yuan wanted to go and see for himself. He knew that he had to thank this uncle properly when he came back this time, because without his help, he might not even be able to go to school.
Seeing that Mo Yuan had given in, Yu Xiu'e stopped pressing the issue. After all, her youngest son had indeed been behaving very well recently, and she had only been venting her frustrations. The family was in such a state largely because of him; otherwise, they would probably still be struggling to make ends meet. She might even be trying to find a way to feed her family with wild vegetables.
Thinking of this, her attitude softened, and she said to Mo Yuan earnestly, "Your eldest sister took the children up the mountain to cut pig feed early this morning. Everyone is busy. You can't do that next time. Young people shouldn't be so unrestrained; it'll harm your health!"
Well, so after all that roundabout talk, we've come back here. It's probably because my husband and I woke up late and ended up at the same time as my older brother and sister-in-law. Yu Xiu'e is subtly reminding me of this. Goodness, after going through all that trouble, she finally revealed her true feelings!
Mo Yuan nodded, indicating that he understood. He understood Yu Xiu'e's good intentions and knew that the family needed everyone's efforts to get better and better.
After nagging, Yu Xiu'e felt a surge of relief; it had been a long time since she had so thoroughly enjoyed scolding someone. Previously, Mo Yuan was always mischievous and troublesome, and Yu Xiu'e would nag him almost every two or three days. However, in the past two months, Mo Yuan had suddenly become well-behaved and sensible, as if he had become a completely different person. This made Yu Xiu'e feel somewhat uneasy, as she suddenly couldn't find anything to criticize or reprimand him for.
Today, finally finding her chance, Yu Xiu'e vented her anger. Seeing Mo Yuan's humble and accepting expression, she nodded in satisfaction, then turned and left the room. Once outside, Yu Xiu'e immediately gathered the other women together for some casual gossip.
Mo Yuan, left behind, looked bewildered, unsure how to respond to his mother's nagging. He shook his head helplessly and returned to the dining table. At this moment, Lin Xue cautiously peered outside, and only after confirming that Yu Xiu'e was far away did she ask with concern, "Has Mother left?" Receiving an affirmative answer from Mo Yuan, Lin Xue secretly rejoiced, relieved that she had escaped unscathed.
"Did your mother scold you? But she's only doing it for your own good, so please don't take it to heart!" Lin Xue comforted Mo Yuan, seemingly worried that he might be upset. Mo Yuan smiled and replied, "Yes, I know Mother is doing it for my own good." Lin Xue probably thought Mo Yuan would be upset after being scolded, but in reality, this was something Mo Yuan was already used to. It was just that Lin Xue rarely witnessed such a scene.
"It's all your fault!" Mo Yuan said to Lin Xue with a smile.
Lin Xue couldn't help but laugh after hearing this. She understood that Mo Yuan wasn't angry or dissatisfied, but rather responding to her concern in a lighthearted and humorous way. The atmosphere between the two became pleasant and harmonious, filled with warmth and peace.
