They all craned their necks to look in this direction, and some even couldn't resist taking a few steps forward, trying to see what kind of delicious food could emit such an alluring aroma.
The bolder neighbors went straight to Wang Wanru and eagerly asked, "Wanru, what delicious food are you making? It smells so good!" Another neighbor chimed in, "Yes, yes, I heard your daughter and son-in-law are back. Your meal must be quite lavish!" Someone else said enviously, "You bet! I can tell just by the smell. And I heard your son-in-law bought all the ingredients? Wow, he's so capable, so thoughtful and filial. You two are really lucky!"
Hearing everyone's praise, Wang Wanru felt as if she were floating on clouds, light and joyful. A satisfied and proud smile spread across her face, and she humbly said, "Oh dear, it's all because the children are so sensible. I kept telling them not to be so extravagant, but they just wouldn't listen. They insisted on buying so much stuff, and even said they'd cook me a lavish meal themselves! I couldn't stop them no matter what I did! But, we're just having a casual meal; there's nothing particularly fancy."
As she spoke, Wang Wanru deliberately kept everyone in suspense. She slowly walked to the stove and gently lifted several pot lids. As the lids were lifted, a rich aroma instantly filled the air, causing everyone around to crane their necks to peer into the pots. Exclamations of surprise rose and fell in waves—
"Wow, this is... this huge carp! My goodness, it's so big!"
"Wow, it smells so good, it's making my mouth water! You're so lucky, your daughter and son-in-law are both so thoughtful!"
Everyone's eyes were fixed on the dazzling array of delicious dishes in the pot, filled with envy and surprise. Wang Wanru stood aside, watching everyone's reactions, secretly pleased with herself, her smile growing even brighter.
