Shi's father's ancestors fled from other places during the war, while Shi's mother was someone he picked up while doing small business.
Neither of the couple had any blood relatives. If it weren't for the fact that two generations of the Shi family were buried on the mountain, Song Yan would have encouraged Mr. and Mrs. Shi to simply change their household registration.
Mr. and Mrs. Shi have been extremely busy these past two days. They have to get rid of things at home that they can't keep, and they've sold or given away grains and vegetables to the villagers at half price.
Even the kimchi that Shi's mother made, apart from leaving two small jars for Song Yan, was all given to her by Song Yan.
Shi Jianjun also found a sunny day to replace the roof tiles to prevent rain and dew from flooding the house.
There was a little incident in between. Deng Yong somehow found out that Shi Fangfang was going to Beijing to make a lot of money, and shamelessly came to beg for forgiveness.
When asked what to do about Widow Liu, Deng Yong's eyes darted around and he avoided eye contact. In the end, he was punched twice by Shi Jianjun and thrown out.
Later, they heard from others that the Deng family and Widow Liu had made an agreement: Widow Liu would stay at Deng Yong's parents' house to prepare for childbirth, and Deng Yong would send money back to support them in the future.
When Song Yan found out about this, she was disgusted. Deng Yong was so shameless that he actually wanted Fangfang to earn money to support his mistress.
They were about to leave when Shi's parents, not wanting to cause any more trouble, advised them to let Deng Yong go this time. But this time, that guy had plotted against Shi Fangfang again, and Song Yan couldn't stand it.
They immediately went to the police station to report the case and even found a lawyer from the city to sue the other party for bigamy.
This way, their schedule won't be disrupted, and Deng Yong will be punished. It's just a matter of paying some lawyer fees, which Boss Song can afford.
The day has finally come for us to set off.
Early in the morning, the Shi family carried incense, candles, and paper money up the mountain. Mr. and Mrs. Shi wanted to say goodbye to their parents and grandparents.
Mr. Shi talked on and on, and shed many tears behind the children's backs.
As they descended the mountain, Shi Jianjun patted his father on the back to comfort him, promising to bring them back to visit often.
One vehicle couldn't possibly carry both goods and passengers, so it was Shi Jianjun's comrade-in-arms who lent them another vehicle at a crucial moment, which enabled them to make the trip to the county town.
Knowing that the Shi family was leaving, the villagers all came out to see them off. They held the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Shi to say goodbye, and even some of Shi Fangfang's friends from the village came. The atmosphere was somewhat sad for a moment.
Shi Jianjun's comrades had other things to do and couldn't give them a ride, but knowing that Song Yan could also drive, they felt relieved to leave.
So Song Yan was sitting in the driver's seat at that moment, and everyone in the village with eyes could see that.
None of them were unsurprised that a woman could learn to drive.
Women can drive?
Seeing Song Yan skillfully turn the car around and reverse, the villagers finally believed that she wasn't just putting on an act.
The Shi family members gradually disappeared into the distance, but the impression they left on the village was far from over.
Among them, Song Yan was the most special one. She broke through the deep-seated patriarchal mindset in everyone's hearts.
Her appearance enabled several girls in the small village to continue their education over the next ten years or so, and two of them even went on to university, but that's another story.
When she left, Shi Fangfang was still a little reluctant to go, but now she was already chatting with her sister-in-law about their future life.
"Fangfang, let me tell you, when you get to Beijing, you need to get a motorcycle license first. Beijing is much bigger than Nanjiang County. Although it's not as far as Xiaogu Village, it will still take you a long time to ride a bicycle from the south to the north of the city." Song Yan pointed out what her sister-in-law needed to learn.
“Okay, sister-in-law, I’ll learn.” Shi Fangfang nodded in agreement, her tone very firm.
"Also, we're all in the food business, and Beijing requires everyone to have a health certificate. Since Mom and Dad haven't had a physical exam before, you can help persuade them to get one."
“Okay!” Shi Fangfang didn’t expect that doing business in Beijing would involve such a thing.
"The house will be renovated first. After you get your permits, come to the main store to learn the production methods and sales methods. Every branch of Good Taste should be standardized." Song Yan said whatever came to mind.
"I will definitely do my best." Her sister-in-law had gone to great lengths to bring her out of her hometown, and she was determined not to let them down.
"Besides all that, the most important thing is to take good care of our parents. You need to keep an eye on their condition and tell me immediately if anything seems wrong. They left their hometown for Beijing for our sake, so you can't neglect them." Song Yan was most worried about the elderly couple not adjusting to the new environment.
"Don't worry, sister-in-law, I will pay close attention to Mom and Dad's situation." Shi Fangfang nodded obediently.
“You also need to change your personality. When we run a business, we encounter all sorts of people. Only by standing up for yourself can you avoid being bullied.” This was also what Song Yan was most worried about.
The vehicle bumped along the mountain road, and Shi Fangfang looked out the window at the scenery, her heart filled with anticipation.
She knew that a completely new journey in life awaited her.
With the help of the two young men, Zhuzi and Gangzi, Song Yan and her companions didn't suffer much along the way.
After getting off the train, they took a minivan and headed straight to the house that Song Yan had rented.
The location is easy to find; it's about a 10-minute walk from their shop on the overpass!
The two shops face south, and the back door faces west. Pushing open the front door, the two main rooms sit neatly in the sunlight.
"Mom and Dad, please don't mind. This place can't compare to the big house back home." Song Yan ushered the people in.
"It's great, it's great." Mr. and Mrs. Shi were very happy; it was much better than they had imagined.
After Shi Fangfang, Zhuzi, and Gangzi had moved all the things into the house, she finally had time to look around the small courtyard.
Because of her work, Shi Fangfang knew that some of her coworkers rented houses in Nanjiang County, and she had been there as well.
Most of them live in the same courtyard as others. If someone cooks something delicious or if a couple has a fight, everyone in the courtyard knows. They have no privacy at all.
If Nanjiang County is like that, let alone Beijing, she had already made preparations, but she didn't expect her sister-in-law to find them a house with a detached house and courtyard.
“Mom and Dad, here’s my idea: the braised food shop doesn’t need to be too big. We can just set up a separate place in the backyard to braise the food. I’m thinking of renting out one shop after it’s renovated, and using the other ourselves. That way, the initial burden won’t be too heavy.” Song Yan led her parents-in-law around the shop.
Mr. Shi did have some business acumen. He nodded, agreeing with Song Yan's statement that rent was the biggest expense for a shop, and that this was a good approach.
