Chapter Fifty-Nine: Successfully Renting a House

Hua Kai went back to school and attended evening self-study. She painted something today and felt cheerful.

However, Hua Kai noticed that Zhou Xinrui had secretly looked at her several times today. What kind of trouble was she causing this time?

After evening self-study, Zhou Xinrui was still staying in the dormitory. She kept glancing at her secretly. Hua Kai ignored her. This person was already abnormal, so there was no need to waste her energy on her.

The next day at noon, Hua Kai had lunch, said goodbye to Zhang Miao, and then went to rent a house.

At that time, there were no real estate agents; people just looked for rental signs on the windows and doors of nearby houses.

There are also small shops downstairs in the community, and rental information is posted nearby.

Hua Kai often buys things at a small shop nearby. She asked the owner and found that most of the houses are two-bedroom apartments. At this time, many of the layouts do not have a living room. However, Hua Kai does not have any strict requirements for the layout. As long as the house is clean and has central heating, it is fine. Burning coal can easily cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which is too dangerous for her older brother to live alone.

The shop owner was very enthusiastic and gave Huakai the addresses of several tenants who met her requirements, telling her to go to the landlord and have the landlord take her to see the apartments.

Seeing that there was still time, Hua Kai quickly went to a nearby restaurant.

The house was in the residential area next to Huakai's dormitory. Huakai found the unit door according to the house number, went up to the second floor, and knocked on the door.

The woman who opened the door was an elderly woman in her sixties with gray hair. After hearing Hua Kai's purpose, the old woman was quite happy: "I'd like to rent this house to a young girl. Young girls are clean."

Hua Kai was a little embarrassed, so she explained the truth: "Grandma, this house is rented for my brother, but don't worry, my brother lives alone and it's very clean."

The old man looked Hua Kai up and down: "You look clean, and your brother must be a clean person too. But if you want to rent it, let's make it clear that you can't bring too many people home. This house is right upstairs from mine. My wife and I are getting old and can't stand the noise. Besides, that house used to be lived in by my son and daughter-in-law. They took good care of it. They went to another city on business. If they come back in a few years, they'll still need to live there. You can't ruin it for me."

Hua Kai was more satisfied with the fact that the landlord lived downstairs. She wouldn't be late on rent, would damage the house, or bring people home to cause trouble. She was worried about her older brother living alone anyway, so it was quite good that she lived close to the landlord.

She quickly agreed: "Grandma, don't worry, my brother is a very well-behaved person. He has hardly ever been to the city before, so he doesn't bring any friends home. We mainly focus on our studies and won't get involved in any messy things."

The old man was relieved to hear this: "Then I'll take you upstairs to have a look."

Hua Kai quickly agreed, explaining that the old man lived on the second floor and the rented apartment was on the third floor.

As they walked uphill, Huakai learned that the old woman's surname was Meng, so Huakai called her Grandma Meng.

Once upstairs, Grandma Meng opened the door. Inside was a foyer, directly opposite which was the kitchen. Outside the kitchen was a small balcony facing east.

To the right of the entrance is a large south-facing bedroom, which is clean and tidy, with a bed, sofa, and wardrobe.

In northern China, many old houses from this era do not have a living room, but the master bedroom is very large. Guests usually spend time in the master bedroom, so the sofa is also in the master bedroom.

To the left of the entrance is the north bedroom, which is quite small, containing only a bed and a small cabinet.

The bathroom is next to the kitchen; it has a squat toilet and a sink—simple and very clean.

The house is decent, the water and electricity are working, and it has a sofa, bed, and cabinets. Although it's a bit old, it's clean, so there's nothing to complain about. I've fallen in love with it.

She directly discussed the rent with Grandma Meng: thirty yuan a month, payable on the first day of each month. Since there were still a few days until the end of the month, she decided not to charge her.

Hua Kai followed Grandma Meng downstairs, went to her house to sign the contract, and then paid a month's rent, thus renting the house.

With the keys in hand, Hua Kai returned to school. She felt that renting a house today had gone exceptionally smoothly. Of course, there weren't many people renting houses at this time, so it was normal that she settled on a place so quickly.

When they reached the bulletin board not far from the teaching building, a tall, good-looking boy stood in front of Hua Kai: "Hua Kai, my name is Zhao Shengan, can we get to know each other?"

Hua Kai listened to the clichéd pickup lines of this era and understood what the other party meant. In addition, there were several people accompanying Zhao Shengan, saying something like "Brother Ye has been paying attention to you for a long time." It was very obvious that Zhao Shengan wanted to pursue her.

She said to Zhao Shengan, "Let's talk privately for a bit."

Boys at this age are not mature, and there's no need to say anything too harsh in front of his friends and embarrass him. After all, it's just the age of budding youth, and there's no right or wrong to speak of.

Zhao Shengan didn't expect that Hua Kai wouldn't just say whether she agreed or disagreed, but instead said she wanted to say a few words to him privately. He nodded, and amidst the cheers of the boys behind him, he followed Hua Kai forward for a while until they were out of earshot.

Hua Kai stopped and looked at Zhao Shengan: "There's no possibility between us, and I'm not suitable for you. I asked you to come alone to save face for you, and also because I was afraid they would stir up trouble and make things difficult for you."

Zhao Shengan's expression grew increasingly serious, because the girl's reaction was unexpected, and she exuded a strong sense of pressure.

He looked at the blooming flowers, his voice lowered: "I've inquired, you don't have a boyfriend, why can't you give me a chance?"

Hua Kai laughed: "Does not having a boyfriend mean I have to give you a chance?"

With a hint of doubt, Zhao Shengan cautiously asked again, "Could it be that Guan Rui from the second year of high school is really pursuing you? Do you like him?"

Hua Kai looked at the boy in front of her and thought he was really immature. She shook her head and said, "You're overthinking it. Guan Rui and I are just friends. I have a lot of things to do and I really don't want to waste my time on puppy love, so don't bother with me. I've saved you face. Let's end it here."

Zhao Shengan looked at the blooming flowers, and after a while, his eyes shone with that kind of light as he said, "You are the most special girl I have ever met. I have pursued a few girls, but you have never rejected me like this before. I like you just the way you are, and I will not give up on pursuing you."

Hua Kai took a deep breath: "Classmate, you really don't need to waste your time on me. If you bother me again, I won't give you any face."

Zhao Shengan nodded: "Don't hold back for me, I just like challenging myself with difficult tasks."

Hua Kai pressed her temples. Kids are really hard to deal with because they're at that fearless age: "If you can't catch me, aren't you afraid your buddies will laugh at you?"

Zhao Shengan flicked his hair back and tossed his head, saying, "I will definitely win you over."

Hua Kai felt a bit of a headache. She really couldn't do anything about this kind of hot-blooded young man: "Anyway, I've said my piece, I don't like you." After saying that, Hua Kai left and headed towards the classroom. There was no point in saying anything more.

Zhao Shengan shouted to Hua Kai's retreating figure, "Anyway, I won't give up."
