Chapter Fourteen: Preparing to Make Money

Li Jing pulled Hua Kai to a nearby stall and bought two ice figurines, each costing one mao (0.1 yuan).

Hua Kai took a bite, and it still tasted a bit like her childhood.

Li Jing, holding Hua Kai's hand, walked forward while eating: "There's a shop up ahead that sells really pretty hair clips. They have those spring-loaded butterfly clips that flutter when you wear them, just like the real ones."

Hua Kai followed Li Jing to a stall that not only had various hair clips, but also colorful hair flowers of all colors, plastic earrings, both clip-on and studded, a very complete selection.

Li Jing looked at them for a long time, but because she liked them all and didn't have the money to buy them all, she ended up not buying any of them.

Hua was happy, thinking that she would make money with her good friends in the future, and then she could buy whatever she wanted.

After wandering around the market, seeing that it was getting late, Hua Kai hurried home. She really needed to start earning money as soon as possible. Once she was sure she could make money, she would go to the high school next week to discuss with the teacher about going back to school.

Li Jing knew Hua Kai's personality; it wasn't easy for her to come out to the market and wander around for so long, so she went back with Hua Kai.

The two walked quickly and arrived home at ten o'clock. Li Jing arrived home first, and her mother called her to pick green beans in the yard, so she went home first.

When Hua Kai arrived home, Gu Lanyan had already returned and was stringing chili peppers in the yard. She had just harvested the red chili peppers, strung them together, and was going to dry them.

"Mom, I'm home." Hua Kai entered the yard and felt very at ease; she really loved this home.

Gu Lanyan saw the flowers bloom and returned, saying, "I always told you to go out for a walk. It would be so nice to go out and have some fun."

Hua Kai felt genuinely happy: "My biological mother is just different. She doesn't let me do any work and always lets me play."

Gu Lanyan laughed and said, "What are you saying, child? Bring me a basin of cold water. These chilies are too spicy. I need to wash my hands quickly; they're burning."

"Mom, you can't wash your hands with cold water if they're burning from chili peppers. You need to use vinegar or alcohol to neutralize the capsaicin, so it won't be so spicy." After saying that, she went inside and brought out a bottle of vinegar.

Gu Lanyan looked at the vinegar bottle and quickly waved her hand: "This vinegar cost money, it won't do. I'll be fine in a while, I'm not that delicate."

Hua Kai placed the vinegar bottle on the windowsill: "Mom, I'll get you some hot water. The hot water will evaporate the capsaicin in the chili peppers."

She knew that Gu Lanyan was frugal and wouldn't even part with vinegar, let alone toothpaste, so she could only use this inexpensive method.

After the flowers bloomed and hot water was brought out, Gu Lanyan said, "This kind of learning is really useful. You can even tell how spicy these chilies are."

Hua Kai helped Gu Lanyan hang the skewered chili peppers on the eaves: "Mom, I went to the market today and thought of a way to make money. Can you let me try it?"

Gu Lanyan looked at Hua Kai with a face full of surprise: "Kai Kai, Mom knows you're anxious to earn money for school, but earning money isn't as easy as you think."

Hua Kai walked up to Gu Lanyan and said, "Mom, this isn't a sudden thought or a spur-of-the-moment idea. It's true. Otherwise, how could I go to the market? You said you went to school for nothing. I'm sure I can earn money."

After saying that, she pulled Gu Lanyan to sit down on the small stool by the window: "Mom, you've been to the market before, right? You saw the stall that makes jianbing guozi, didn't you?"

Gu Lanyan nodded: "Yes, I remember."

"Their jianbing guozi (Chinese crepes) cost 50 cents each, so the profit margin is probably 50%, meaning they can earn about 25 cents per crepe. I roughly calculated that they can sell at least a hundred a day, no less. Let's put it in the low range, they can earn at least 20 yuan. There are 12 market days a month in our village, so that's 240 yuan a month, and we don't even have to go every day, so it won't interfere with our farm work." Hua Kai was afraid her mother wouldn't believe her, so she explained in detail, while also trying to minimize the amount of money she said.

Gu Lanyan still looked confused: "But we can't steal other people's business, and I don't know how to make jianbing guozi either."

Hua Kai smiled and said, "Mom, it's not about stealing other people's business. It's just that I learned some skills from an old lady who lived alone near the school gate. She makes rolled pancakes and smoked meat pancakes, and so on. Shall we give it a try?" Hua Kai could only tell a white lie.

"That's not right. You go to school every day, how can you have time to learn this from others?" Gu Lanyan asked Hua Kai, completely bewildered.

Hua Kai explained, "It's like this, Mom. That grandma's house is right next to the middle school. Once, when it was raining, I took shelter at her house and helped her with some chores. That grandma really liked me and made me some pancakes. After that, I often went to help her with chores during my lunch break, and she taught me these skills, saying that otherwise they would be lost."

Hua Kai discovered that lying was essential after this time travel, since many things needed to have a source.

Gu Lanyan nodded after listening: "Our Kaikai has been kind since he was little."

Hua Kai quickly added, "Mom, I'll make the wraps this afternoon. We'll calculate the cost then and taste them to see if they're good. If they're good, we'll go try them out at the market on the 4th."

As Gu Lanyan pondered, she said, "We don't have that pancake cart either. It's not as simple as you think."

"Mom, all we need is an insulated box. You can make one out of a cardboard box at home and then just buy one ready-made," Hua Kai said.

"If it doesn't require much capital, then let's give it a try?" Gu Lanyan thought that she didn't have much capital, and if it didn't taste good, she could just eat it at home. It wasn't so hot this season, and the pancakes could be kept for two days, so they would be eaten up in two days anyway.

"Okay, then I'll go to the garden and pick the vegetables we need." Hua Kai was very excited.

“Okay, we happen to have half a bag of flour at home.” Gu Lanyan said, counting the things in the house.

Hua Kai was surprised that her mother agreed so easily, and gave Gu Lanyan a big hug: "Mom, you're so good."

Gu Lanyan laughed: "How come this child has suddenly changed his personality? But it's good this way too."

Hua Kai carried a small basket from under the window to the back garden, where she cut some chives, picked some green and red peppers, and also gathered a few scallions and some cilantro.

If you have potatoes and carrots at home, that's enough.

Hua Kai found the steelyard balance in her house. She had learned all the recipes from an app in her previous life. There was an advantage to that: the proportions were fixed. As long as she followed the fixed recipe, there would be no mistakes.

However, after fiddling with it for a while, I found that I didn't quite know how to use it. I asked Gu Lanyan for help. She weighed the flour and then mixed it with a fixed ratio of half hot water to half cold water. This way, the pancakes would be softer. I also added a little salt to the dough, which made it more flexible.

After kneading the dough, I let it rest in a bowl. Meanwhile, I started washing and preparing the vegetables. Once the pancakes are cooked, they can be put directly into the pan without wasting any time.

Gu Lanyan saw the flowers blooming and was about to cut potato shreds, so she quickly took the knife and cut them herself, not wanting the child to cut their hand.

Hua Kai smiled and went to wash other vegetables. After washing them, she told Gu Lanyan how to cut them. The mother and daughter worked together very well.

The vegetables were all washed and chopped, so it was time to start making the pancakes. Today, I'm making enough for twenty pancakes, but actually, rolled pancakes use very little flour.

After dividing the dough into portions, Huakai brushed oil between two portions, then rolled them out to the required size, and cooked two at a time to prevent them from drying out.
