As the clock struck the hour, Hua Kai quickly started cooking with her younger brother. Everyone else in the family had gone to husk corn, but she was at least at home cooking so that her parents and older brother could come home and eat something ready-made.
After they finished cooking, it was getting dark when Hua Wanjiang and the others returned.
Before they even entered, Gu Lanyan's voice could be heard: "I knew you'd have to come back."
Hua Kai pushed open the door and ran out: "It's harvest season at home. If the two of us were to play outside, how carefree would we be? Besides, everyone's harvest season is here, and no one will play with us."
Hua Wanjiang said, "Our child is so sensible."
Hua Kai said, "Dad, your own children are always the best."
Hua Wanjiang laughed: "No, our children are the best. Today in the fields, several people came to ask me about doing business. Everyone praises you all."
Gu Lanyan also laughed and said, "Alright, stop being so vain. Hurry up and wash up and change your clothes so we can eat. You two, tell me about your trip to your maternal grandparents' house."
Hua Kai went inside to cook, while Hua Qingyang helped his parents and older brother get water. Soon after, they all came inside to eat.
It got dark, so we turned on the lights. We replaced the bulbs with larger wattage ones, and they were much brighter than before.
While eating, Huakai briefly recounted what had happened that day. She didn't mention her aunt's situation, as bringing it up at the dinner table and causing everyone to cry wouldn't be a good idea. However, Huakai did mention her aunt's affair with her brother.
Gu Lanyan is really different from before. She said, "As Kaikai said, Lianfang is very good to Jinzhou and Mom, so it's not a big deal that she cares about her own family. But we can't let the two children suffer. We can't let Guling and Guwen be used as scapegoats for her nephew. Aren't all children precious?"
Hua Wanjiang nodded: "I also think that the child's affairs are a big deal. We won't say what the adults do, but we can't let the child suffer because of it. Gu Ling is a year younger than our Kai Kai, and we're already worried about her being married off to someone else for a dowry. How can that be allowed?"
Hua Kai smiled and said, "Dad, you've changed a lot. Your horizons have really broadened."
Hua Wanjiang laughed too: "I've seen and heard a lot. I've gone to the market with your mother and met all kinds of people. I understand a lot more."
Hua Kai said, "Dad, when our family is doing better in the future, we'll help Gu Ling and Gu Wen out. As for my uncle and aunt, we'll see how things go for now. After all, I don't really trust my aunt. I don't want my uncle to work so hard only to have it all go to someone else in the end."
Hua Wanjiang said, "Okay, these children are all good. Let's help them if we can."
Gu Lanyan looked at them and smiled: "I'm not like Lian Fang, who's obsessed with her own family."
Hua Kai smiled and said, "We're just helping out of the goodness of our hearts, not like my aunt who abandons her own family to help her brother."
Hua Wanjiang also said, "That's right, we're helping the children, and all the children are good."
After finishing their meal and tidying up, Hua Kai started telling her parents about her aunt, Gu Lanying. As she talked, she couldn't stop crying whenever she thought of Gu Lanying's appearance.
As Gu Lanyan listened, she also wiped away tears: "Your aunt has a bad life. Her husband passed away early, but fortunately, her parents-in-law are good and her children are sensible."
Hua Kai said, "My aunt is really having a hard time. I talked to her mother-in-law and asked her to come over for a few days when she has free time. I want my mom to teach my aunt how to make pancakes and go to the market. Anyway, our market doesn't conflict with my aunt's market. The days are different, so there's no competition."
Hua Kai didn't actually intend for her family to keep going to the market. Next year, she wanted her family to open a bean product factory, but they didn't have the funds yet, so she didn't want to talk about it too early. However, she was always preparing.
Gu Lanyan listened to Hua Kai's idea and said, "Sure, your aunt's village is only half an hour away from the nearest town by bicycle. Even if she doesn't go to the market, she can still sell her goods near the school in town."
Hua Kai smiled and looked at Gu Lanyan: "Mom, you really have a business mind now. You and Dad have both made great progress. Your future is limitless."
Hua Wanjiang laughed and said, "This girl, you're joking about your parents. We're already so old, and we still have unlimited potential. We're practically in our twilight years."
This joke made everyone in the room laugh.
Talking about happy things made everyone feel much better.
Perhaps it's because their goals are more ambitious, or perhaps it's because their horizons have broadened; in any case, their thinking is definitely different now than before.
That night, Hua Kai didn't sleep well. She kept having dreams, dreaming of many indistinct scenes, unsure whether they belonged to the original owner or to herself.
The next day, the family went to work in the fields, leaving Huakai at home to look after the house, feed the pigs, and cook.
Hua Kai knew that her family was spoiling her and not letting her do farm work, so she didn't insist on going to the fields. She thought that today was the Mid-Autumn Festival, so she could cook some good food and buy some wine at home and have a good celebration with her family in the evening.
I heard that in the past, after finishing the autumn harvest early, I would go and help my second and fourth uncles. This year, Hua Kai didn't plan to do that. Of course, Hua Wanjiang had already said that he wouldn't help, as his own family had to go to the market and other things, and he was too busy to do anything else.
After the incident the day before yesterday, Hua Wanhe no longer dared to ask Hua Wanjiang for help, which saved them a lot of trouble.
Hua Kai went to the countryside at noon and bought meat, ribs, fish, and a few cans of beer, which she tied to the back of her bicycle, intending to go home.
"Hua Kai, it really is you! I wanted to go to your house!" Lu Xin ran to the opposite side of Hua Kai's house.
When Hua Kai saw that it was Lu Xin, she didn't show any expression. Hua Kai didn't have a good impression of him. After all, he was rather superficial and only looked at the surface. If he had believed in Hua Kai and stood up for her when the original owner was harmed by Hua Lin, perhaps Hua Kai's life wouldn't have been so dark.
Since he likes flowers blooming, but only looks at the surface and has no trust at all, this liking is not worthy of respect.
Although it can't be said that Lu Xin was wrong, Hua Kai doesn't want to associate with him much.
She said to Lu Xin, "Is there something you need? If not, I'm in a hurry to get home."
Lu Xin looked at Hua Kai and thought that everything about her was different. Except for her appearance, which was still the same as Hua Kai's, no, even her appearance seemed different. She was more beautiful and had a better temperament. There was an indescribable feeling about her.
“Hua Kai, you weren’t this cold to me before. You used to tell me everything. Hua Kai, what’s wrong with you?” Lu Xin looked at Hua Kai with confusion.
"Lu Xin, we're classmates after all. If you have any questions about studying, I'm happy to answer them. If not, I really need to go home and cook."
"Hua Kai, can we talk alone?"
"Isn't this just me?" Hua Kai looked around and saw no one.
"It's not about being alone, I just want us to calm down and have a proper talk. Are you free tomorrow afternoon? If you are, I'll wait for you by the river near your house."
