Chapter Sixty-Two: Great Kindness and Virtue

Ye Yifan looked at Hua Kai: "Hua Kai, why don't you persuade Uncle Hua, do we still need to be so polite?"

Hua Kai discovered that Ye Yifan was very respectful to his elders, and his manners were impeccable. He actually had many good qualities, and after getting to know him better, she felt that he wasn't as stiff as before when he spoke.

She said to Hua Wanjiang, "Dad, if you keep being so polite, Captain Ye will feel uncomfortable. I remember what I owe Captain Ye, and I will definitely repay his great kindness in the future. Don't worry." She added that she was trying to ease the atmosphere with a bit of a joke.

Hua Wanjiang was displeased when he heard his daughter joking: "Look at you, you're still so immature and bold. How dare you talk to Captain Ye like that?"

Hua Kai scratched her head and looked at Hua Wanjiang: "Dad, Captain Ye and I are friends. We will handle these things in our own way. You really don't need to worry."

After saying that, seeing that it was getting late, she said to Hua Wanjiang, "Dad, Captain Ye is still busy, let's not keep him up."

Ye Yifan did indeed have other things to do, and of course, he was also afraid that Hua Wanjiang would be too polite, so he said to Hua Wanjiang, "Uncle Hua, I have to go now. I'll visit your home when I have time."

Hua Wanjiang quickly agreed: "Okay, okay, don't delay your work. Come visit me at home when you have time."

Hua Kai waved to Ye Yifan: "Goodbye, Captain Ye."

Ye Yifan said goodbye to Hua Kai and her father and hurried off to work. Their work was coming to an end; they had indeed been quite busy these past few days.

As Hua Wanjiang walked, he muttered, "I've been wanting to invite Captain Ye to my house for a meal, but you said before that you were worried he might have some dietary restrictions, so I didn't dare to invite him directly."

Hua Kai had eaten with Ye Yifan before, so she said, "Captain Ye really doesn't have any dietary restrictions or many rules. Last time I wanted to treat him to dinner, but he ended up paying for it."

Hua Wanjiang wasn't too surprised: "Captain Ye helped you resolve your second uncle's matter, so you should indeed treat him to a meal. But you, why didn't you insist on paying?"

Hua Kai thought about eating before this matter came up, but there were some things she couldn't explain too much to her father, because the more she explained, the more questions arose, and her father would worry.

So she said, "I'll find another opportunity to invite him to dinner later."

"If there's a chance, we should invite them over for a meal; it's our way of showing our appreciation."

"Then we'll wait until there's another opportunity."

"You're just too impolite."

"Dad, we young people have our own way of getting along, you don't need to be so nervous."

As the father and daughter were talking, they arrived at their doorstep. Gu Lanyan came out to pour water and saw her daughter, beaming with joy: "Kaikai's back! Mom will cook dumplings right away. Come inside and wash your hands quickly."

Hua Kai said, "Don't worry, Mom, my brother and my younger brother haven't come back yet."

Hua Qingyi came out of the house and said, "Knowing you were coming back today, I came back early too."

Hua Kai smiled and called out, "Big Brother! It's so good to have an older brother. It's my dream from my past life. How wonderful it would have been to have a biological older brother in my past life, so I wouldn't have to face my stepmother and half-brother."

But it's good that this was achieved in this life, with a harmonious family and a warm older brother.

She smiled and said to Hua Qingyi, "Brother, I've rented a place. You'll come to the city with me tomorrow."

Hua Qingyi had anticipated his sister's speed, so he was prepared: "Yes, I'll go with you anytime."

Hua Wanjiang said, "Come inside, everyone. Let's sit down and talk."

Upon entering the house, Hua Kai noticed a large new item: a sewing machine.

She was overjoyed: "Dad, we bought a sewing machine?"

She wasn't entirely satisfied with the clothes from that era, so she had been thinking of buying a sewing machine so her mother could make clothes for her, whatever she wanted. But it turned out her family had already bought one.

Hua Wanjiang said, "Your mother was thinking that since your brother was going to the city, she wanted to buy him some clothes at the market. Then she thought that you only had one new set of clothes, so she also wanted to buy you another set. After buying clothes for both of you, she thought that your brother shouldn't be too badly dressed, and we shouldn't dress too poorly when we go to the market. Besides, winter is coming soon, so we need to buy winter clothes. When we calculated it, there were too many things to buy, so we simply bought a sewing machine."

After saying that, Hua Wanjiang pointed to the stool next to the sewing machine: "Your mother learned very quickly from your Grandma Zhang. On that stool, your mother made you a dress based on the style that your Grandma Zhang made last time. She also made a dress for your brother and a pair of pants for Qingyang."

Hua Kai looked at the clothes and pants folded on the stool next to the sewing machine: "My mom is amazing, she made so many."

“I didn’t make these myself. Your Grandma Zhang and Aunt Feng helped me. I couldn’t have made this many by myself.” Gu Lanyan said at the door, then added, “Set the table. Qingyang should be back soon. Let’s get ready to eat.”

Hua Kai and Hua Qingyi started setting up the table and getting bowls and chopsticks.

Just then, Hua Qingyang came in carrying his schoolbag: "I knew there would be something delicious today. My sister is back, and Mom promises to cook something delicious."

Hua Kai smiled at her younger brother: "Hurry up and wash your hands. I brought you some sandwiches in your schoolbag. They're delicious." As she spoke, she took out the sandwiches and gave one to her younger brother, and also gave one to her older brother. In her eyes, her older brother was also a child.

Hua Qingyi gave his bread to Hua Qingyang, saying, "I'm an adult, I don't like eating these."

Hua Kai handed another one to Hua Qingyi: "Big brother, you eat it. If you don't eat it, I won't eat it either."

Hua Wanjiang said to Hua Qingyi, "Although you are the eldest, you are still a child. The family has owed you enough in the past. Now that our family is doing well, you should eat whatever is available, just like the other two. Don't always try to save money."

Gu Lanyan brought in dumplings: "Your dad is right. Actually, Qingyang is the one who is least at a disadvantage. The eldest brother is the one who is at a disadvantage the most. If you two become successful in the future, don't forget your eldest brother."

Hua Kai smiled and said, "Mom, my older brother might be even more successful than us in the future."

Gu Lanyan smiled and said, "I believe what Kai Kai says." After saying that, she put down the dumplings and went out.

Hua Kai followed along, helping Gu Lan Yan serve the dishes. There were plenty of vegetables available this season, so Gu Lan Yan stir-fried some cabbage, mixed some shredded potatoes, and served some homemade pickled vegetables. In no time, the table was full of food.

We ate early today, so there was no need to turn on the lights. During the meal, we didn't talk about anything too heavy.

After finishing their meal and putting down their chopsticks, Gu Lanyan asked about Hua Kai and the day Hua Wanhe went to school. Because Ye Yifan had told them, they couldn't ask too many questions, but they knew that things were definitely not as easy as Ye Yifan made them out to be.

Hua Kai recounted the events of that day, downplaying the seriousness of the situation: "My second uncle brought my second aunt's cousin, who works at the Education Bureau, to our school to try and get me expelled. However, Director Gu of our Political Education Department is a friend of Captain Ye, so he helped me suppress the matter. Director Gu became a director at such a young age, so he must have connections, right? He also called Captain Ye, and it was even simpler for Captain Ye. He made a call to the director of the Education Bureau, which scared my second aunt's cousin so much that he didn't dare to look up. That settled the matter, so you don't need to worry."
