Wu Cui looked at her strangely, "Jiang Xiaoli, what was your ranking in the provincial joint examination?"
Why does she feel like her roommate is a bit reckless and is she just there to make up the numbers?
Jiang Xiaoli took out her error notebook from her bag. "First place."
Wu Cui was drinking water when she choked and coughed repeatedly. "You're the number one in your Qin Province league?"
Jiang Xiaoli patted her back and nodded, "Yes, what's wrong?"
Wu Cui paused, wanting to ask something but didn't, only saying, "It's nothing."
The room quieted down. Wu Cui occupied the table without her noticing, and leaned against the headboard to look at her notebook of wrong answers.
It was almost lunchtime when Wu Cui's classmate knocked on her door, calling her to have dinner and inviting her to join them.
She pointed to the bag she had brought back at noon, "You guys go ahead, I have some food here."
She was going back to study, so Zong Jia packed several of her favorite dishes for her to take to the restaurant to heat up.
She had just finished heating up her food at the restaurant and sat down to eat when she ran into Xu Xing and another boy coming in.
Jiang Xiaoli waved to him, "Let's sit together."
The two of them brought over their food, and Xu Xing offered to introduce them, saying, "He's my roommate, Chi Hongbin from No. 1 High School."
Chi Hongbin greeted her with a smile, "Hello, I've heard Xu Xing mention you a lot, and it's great to finally meet you."
Jiang Xiaoli asked curiously, "Has he been talking badly about me?"
"Haha," Chi Hongbin laughed, "How could that be? Xu Xing has always said you're very capable."
She smiled and placed a piece of braised pork on Xu Xing's plate. "It's not easy, not easy at all. The proud Xu Xiaoxing actually praised me behind my back. Try this braised pork, it's delicious."
Then she pushed her dishes forward, saying, "Try these, this is a long-established local Shanghai cuisine restaurant in Shanghai."
Chi Hongbin looked at his plate, then at the delicious-looking dishes in front of him, and finally couldn't resist.
He picked up a piece of poached chicken and said, "Jiang Xiaoli, this is really delicious. Can you tell me the name of this restaurant later? I want to try other dishes after my exams."
Jiang Xiaoli gave him the restaurant name and address directly, and also recommended a few dishes that she had tried and thought were delicious at lunchtime.
Seeing the two of them chatting so enthusiastically, Xu Xing asked, "Jiang Xiaoli, are you confident about the first day of the exam tomorrow?"
She thought for a moment and replied, "I think I'm pretty sure I can get into the national training team by winning first place, but as for the ranking... I'll just do my best."
Chi Hongbin knew that the two of them had won first and second place in the physics competition finals.
He laughed and said, "I'd be proud if I could get first place in the national competition, but if you two get first or second place, that would be amazing!"
No sooner had Chi Hongbin finished speaking than a provocative voice rang out, "First or second? You've got quite the nerve."
Jiang Xiaoli glanced at the boy who had spoken and laughed, "What, are you still not convinced by your defeat?"
They had met this person two months ago during the physics competition. It seemed he had also won first place in the national competition, but his ranking was around 30th or 40th.
Yu Yang was hit where it hurt: "Don't think that just because you're good at physics, you can do well in math. Don't you even know where the top three contestants from the past few years are from!"
Jiang Xiaoli shrugged. "I don't know where the top three from a few years ago were from, but you weren't among them."
Xu Xing listened to her roasting Yu Yang from the side, barely suppressing his laughter. He found it so interesting to watch her roast people.
Chi Hongbin came over and whispered in her ear, "This Yu Yang is from Beijing No. 101 Middle School. A few years ago, there were people from their school on the national team for the Mathematical Olympiad."
When Yu Yang saw them still huddled together whispering, he spoke up angrily.
"Jiang Xiaoli, do you dare to take a gamble?"
Jiang Xiaoli glanced at him and said, "I feel like your school's civic education is pretty mediocre. Is it really appropriate for you to represent Kyoto in a competition and arrange gambling with other students?"
Yu Yang was so angry he saw stars. "You're afraid to gamble because you're scared!"
Jiang Xiaoli looked at him amusedly, "No, no, no, I'm just afraid you can't afford to gamble."
“Alright! Let’s bet on our results!” Yu Yang immediately said.
She smacked her lips. "Xiao Yu, I always said you're immature. How can you bet without setting a bet?"
Yu Yang immediately spoke up, "Whoever loses has to give up making it into the national training team!"
“No problem!” Jiang Xiaoli agreed without even thinking.
"Hiss—" A gasp instantly filled the air around them.
"These two are really at odds!"
"Tsk tsk, are they both confident of winning the national first prize?"
"If one of them loses and forfeits, can the spot be passed on to the next person?"
"..."
The commotion here immediately attracted the attention of the teachers in charge.
Teacher Duan, Chen, and a middle-aged female teacher jogged over.
Chen pulled Jiang Xiaoli aside and asked her what was going on.
Before Jiang Xiaoli could speak, Chi Hongbin recounted the entire incident in its entirety.
He also lamented, "Yu Yang is too domineering. What business is it of his if the three of us are eating and chatting? He just had to interrupt and made me so angry. He was the one who suggested the bet."
Chen Zhe understood Jiang Xiaoli, but simply sighed and said nothing.
Teacher Duan earnestly advised, "Jiang, it hasn't been easy for you two to get this far. Yu was in the wrong. I'll talk to his teacher. Just think of it as a little argument, and let's not bring up the bet or anything like that, okay?"
Jiang Xiaoli shrugged indifferently, "I don't care, anyway I won't lose."
Seeing that although she was frivolous, she was still communicable, Mr. Duan breathed a sigh of relief. "Alright, I'll go talk to Yu's teacher now."
After Teacher Duan left, Chen pointed at her in the air and said, "Your mouth!"
Jiang Xiaoli said to him with a grin, "Teacher Chen, this time it's not my fault, he provoked me first."
She had just finished eating at the restaurant when Teacher Duan came looking for her.
"Jiang, I've spoken with Yu's teacher. You two should apologize to each other, and we'll consider this matter closed. Is that alright?"
Jiang Xiaoli tapped her fingers lightly on the table a few times. "Teacher Duan, I don't think there's anything I did or said today that I should apologize for."
Teacher Duan pulled up a chair and sat down in front of her. "Jiang, it's not good for you two students to have a fight in such a crowded place like the cafeteria. Now that you've both taken a step back, isn't that a good thing?"
She chuckled softly, "Teacher Duan, if our argument has affected other students who are eating, I'm willing to apologize to them. But apologizing to Yu Yang is absolutely out of the question."
Xu Xing, who had been by her side waiting for the outcome, suddenly spoke up, "Teacher Duan, what did Yu Yang say?"
Teacher Duan's face darkened when he heard his question, and he mumbled, "His teacher will talk to him."
