Huaihai Road is very narrow. The plane trees on both sides of the road have lost all their leaves. The sky is still leaden gray, with faint sunlight shining through the gaps in the thick clouds.
Chu Beichen was dressed in black with a silver-gray cashmere scarf around his neck. Su Nian was wearing a newly bought white shirt and wide-leg pants, with a pretty ponytail. She walked beside Chu Beichen. The man was handsome and the woman was pretty, just like people in a painting.
The two had just walked out of the Cathay Cinema and watched a Hollywood blockbuster together, Beauty and the Beast. This was undoubtedly a love movie, and it also fits the current mood of the two. "Even if you are a beast, I will fall in love with you," this line kept echoing in Su Nian's ears, making her very yearning, and her whole heart was filled with deep love.
"What are you thinking about?" Compared to the sentimental Su Nian, Chu Beichen was more attracted by the gorgeous scenes and twists and turns of the plot.
"Oh, so touching!" Su Nian admired sincerely.
"Haha," Chu Beichen had long wanted to bring Su Nian to Huaihai Road to play, but Su Nian had always been burdened by the heavy workload. She had to make money and make a living. Chu Beichen couldn't be so selfish and only care about himself.
Fortunately, Su Nian had vision. Although stock subscription certificates were a new thing, she dared to invest in them. Moreover, she acted steadily, accurately and ruthlessly, making a small investment for a big return. She earned enough money for her tuition and living expenses for the past few years in one go, which made Chu Beichen quite impressed.
Su Nian made money, and even her smile became more cheerful. Chu Beichen saw it and felt happy in his heart. He took advantage of the weekend to fulfill his wish and brought Su Nian to Huaihai Road for fun.
"What are we going to do next?" A sycamore leaf fell down, Su Nian grabbed it lightly, and checked the veins in the light with great interest.
"How about we go to the Red House Western Restaurant for dinner?" Chu Beichen pointed to the red roof not far away.
Huaihai Road was the route he carefully selected. He didn't have to go out too early. He could get enough sleep on weekends and walk along the old street to watch a movie first, then have a big meal. After the meal, he would walk for a while and reach Zhongmao, where he could take Su Nian in to choose a chain.
The two of them were not close enough to hold hands. Chu Beichen reached out several times to hold Su Nian, but failed.
Su Nian made a lot of money this time and was very satisfied. She was full of hope for life. The cramped and uneasy feeling she had in the past had dissipated a lot. After listening to Chu Beichen's suggestion, she immediately nodded, "Okay! I haven't eaten Western food yet!"
Red House Western Food is more about the sense of ritual than the taste. After all, for a long time, Shanghai people have regarded going to the Red House for a big meal as a very serious event.
When the two of them walked to the door of the red house, there were already quite a few people waiting for a table.
"When I was little, whenever I came to Shanghai, my grandma would bring me here to eat Western food!" Chu Beichen said with a smile. These were the bright colors of his childhood, and he wanted to share them with Su Nian.
Su Nian had never been here in her two lifetimes. She was curiously examining the thick glass on the door. In front of them stood an elderly couple, both dressed very formally. Seeing this, Su Nian's heart moved. She leaned over to Chu Beichen's ear and said, "Look, there really are a lot of old Shanghainese people coming here to eat!"
Around five o'clock, the door to the Red House opened and people filed in. The aroma of coffee and cheese hit them. A waiter in a red bow tie led Chu Beichen and Su Nian to their seats and asked in Shanghainese, "What would you like to order?"
Chu Beichen didn't even look at the menu, but skillfully listed a few dishes: borscht, shrimp cups, fried pork chops, and crab fights.
