Chapter 267: One Pot Stew

At around four or five in the afternoon, the jeep, like a tired old ox, finally drove into Laowan Township.

"Xiao Su, this time, you should go first and do your work. Don't go visit your good friends until you have dealt with your household registration," Fan Pengjun reminded Su Nian as soon as they entered the village. "Your adoptive mother is emotionally unstable right now, so it's best if you don't meet her!"

Su Nian smiled and nodded. Why would she want to be exploited by Su's mother? She wasn't stupid!

Seeing Su Nian's eyes fixed on a house at the entrance of the village, Chu Beichen also followed her gaze. The house was very large, but very dilapidated and worn out. There were several holes in the old fence wall, and there were dead branches in the yard.

Chu Beichen knew that this was most likely where Su Nian grew up!

The jeep continued to drive forward and entered a large blue brick courtyard. There was a sign hanging at the gate, indicating that this was where Fan Pengjun worked.

The jeep stopped securely. Fan Pengjun went downstairs to get his things and said with a smile, "Now you know why I said we'd have a reception tonight, right?"

After sitting in the car for a whole day, Chu Beichen felt his legs were sore. Thinking that Xiao Su Nian and his old comrades were living in such an environment, he felt sad and uncomfortable.

"Why are you still trying to pick up the wind?" Chu Beichen helped Su Nian down, "We are all family!"

"That won't do. You've finally come here!" Fan Pengjun smiled and pointed to a room with a large chimney, from which curling smoke rose. "We set up a trap last night. We've stewed pheasants and rabbits long ago. I guarantee you haven't tasted them yet!"

People say that people would rather eat things flying in the sky than things running on the ground. I wonder what Fan Pengjun’s cooking of the air and the land will taste like!

Fan Pengjun led the two into the wing room. The room was small, simply furnished, and fairly clean. "You each have a room. This is like our guesthouse. If you need anything, come to me!"

There was ready-made hot water in the thermos. Su Nian wrung out a hot towel and wiped his face. Then he opened the door and looked outside in a daze.

"What are you thinking about?" Chu Beichen had also finished washing up and asked Su Nian considerately.

Su Nian really wanted to know what the suspicious point Fan Pengjun had discovered was. "Um, is it convenient to take a look now?"

Chu Beichen nodded in understanding: "Let's go find him!"

Fan Pengjun was in the main room, and across from him sat a middle-aged man with an unshaven beard. When he saw the two men come in, he extended his hand and introduced them, "Old Hu, Hu Hongde. We all call him Tiger. He's the top leader of Laowan Township!"

Su Nian knew this Hu Township Chief. He was tall and had a red face. He was a truly warm-hearted person. In her previous life, she was deceived into marriage, and when she left Laowan Township, she took Hu Hongde's car.

The few people met, shook hands, and exchanged a few words. Before Chu Beichen could speak, Fan Pengjun brought up the matter of checking the household registration.

Hu Hongde stretched his head to look into the yard and shook his head. "Xiao Li had something to do at home today, so he left a little early. These files are managed by him. We have to wait until he comes tomorrow morning to talk."

Su Nian and Chu Beichen looked at each other, both a little disappointed, but they also knew that places like Laowan Township would not have any window system like in big cities, so now they could only wait patiently!

"Okay, okay, just do as I say. Let's welcome everyone first, and then have a good sleep!" Fan Pengjun laughed and tried to smooth things over, leading everyone to the cafeteria.

The cafeteria is just opposite Chu Beichen's room. It is a large open space. According to Fan Pengjun, usually everyone in this place goes home to eat, and he is the only outsider who cooks here. It can be said that this is his exclusive cafeteria.
