Chapter 83 Wheat Harvest
The wheat in the field has turned yellow. We should harvest the wheat quickly and plant corn in the next few days. If we delay, the corn will not grow well.
As of last year, there were five people registered in the Li family's household registration book.
Except for Li Lei's household registration which was moved to the army, the rest of the household registrations are still in the Li family.
After Li Xu got married, she did not move her household registration out of the country. She was still registered in her mother's household registration book until she bought a house last year.
There are five people in the family, and each person has one and a half acres of food-ration land. The Li family has a total of more than seven acres of land.
Although Li Xu's household registration was moved out last year, the village did not take back the land because Li Lei would be back soon. When Li Lei's household registration is moved back, the land will be used to fill Li Lei's vacancy.
These seven acres of land are now all planted with winter wheat.
After the winter wheat is harvested, two acres of land will be used to build a greenhouse. Another two acres will be used to plant seasonal vegetables. The rest of the land will be planted with corn.
Therefore, Li Zhiming and Liu Guihua hurried home to harvest the wheat.
…
When Li Miao was looking for a job, the first person Li Xu thought of was Li Yong.
It would be best if Li Yong’s restaurant was still short of staff.
The work in the restaurant is not tiring, and with Li Yong, a biological brother, taking care of him, the family feels relieved.
Unfortunately, however, Li Yong's restaurant is not short of people.
"Restaurant business is not doing well right now. We are so idle every day. How can we hire people? If this continues, I think I will have to leave soon."
Li Yong, who had been busy for several days and didn't even have time to visit Li Miao for the college entrance examination, finally showed up.
Li Xu heard this and became worried: "In this case, you should find other jobs as soon as possible, otherwise you will be in a difficult situation."
Li Yong opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but finally swallowed his words.
"Aunt, you are so capable, don't wash dishes for others anymore." Ji Yuanyuan ran to Li Miao and said, "You can make a lot of money by tutoring others."
Li Miao is a college student for sure. Isn't it a waste of his talent to wash dishes in a restaurant?
Moreover, the least valuable thing nowadays is hard work, and knowledge is the most valuable wealth.
Ji Yuanyuan's words made Li Miao's eyes light up. She hesitated for a moment, then looked at Li Xu and said, "Since my second brother's restaurant is not short of people, I will go home to help my parents harvest the wheat and then come back to see them. It would be best if I can find a tutoring job."
She originally thought that Li Yong's restaurant would definitely need someone, so she stayed and did not follow her parents back to their hometown.
But who knew that I would miscalculate.
Li Xu thought about it and nodded, "Okay, wait for me to come back from the vegetable market tomorrow and we'll go back together."
Then she looked at Li Yong again: "You take the bus back to the hotel tomorrow morning, and leave the bicycle to Miaomiao."
Li Yong agreed readily: "I understand, just use it."
The next day, Li Xu went to the vegetable market early in the morning. Li Yong made breakfast for Li Miao and the three children before returning to the restaurant.
It was past eight o'clock when Li Xu came back from the vegetable market. After a simple meal, she and Li Miao took their three children back to their hometown.
Ji Ziang was a little unhappy. He had already thought of the gift he wanted, but hadn't had the time to tell Uncle Zhang.
"Mom, why didn't you wake me up this morning? I wanted to talk to Uncle Zhang."
Li Xu was riding a tricycle in front of him. Hearing this, she said perfunctorily, "Mom will definitely wake you up tomorrow morning."
Just as they encountered an uphill slope, the brothers Ji Ziang and Ji Zixuan jumped out of the truck and pushed hard from the back.
Li Xu and Li Miao returned home. Li Zhiming and Liu Guihua were not there. They must have gone to harvest wheat.
At that time, machines were not yet popular and all work in the fields was done manually.
When the few people arrived at the end of the field, they saw Li Zhiming and Liu Guihua from afar, holding sickles in their hands, bending over and cutting wheat.
In just one day, the old couple mowed almost two acres of land.
Li Xu took the sickle from the tricycle and told Ji Zixuan and Ji Ziang, "You two just wait here, don't run around, and keep an eye on your sister, okay?"
Ji Zixuan nodded, but Ji Ziang had already started looking around.
Li Xu was a little worried and warned again: "There are many wells nearby, don't run around, Ji Ziang, did you hear me?"
When his name was called, Ji Ziang nodded randomly: "I know, Mom. I won't run around."
Li Xu then walked away, looking back every few steps.
Ji Zixuan brought his younger brother and sister to the shade of the tree and told them, "Let's wait here and don't go anywhere. If you're bored, read a book."
He took out his schoolbag and flipped out the textbook: "Zi'ang, this is the fifth grade textbook. You can study on your own first."
He took out another picture book and placed it in front of Ji Yuanyuan.
In a place like this, Ji Ziang couldn't concentrate on reading at all. He was thinking about the cicadas on the trees, and then the little bugs in the ditch.
Although Ji Yuanyuan was not interested in picture books, she was even less interested in other things.
She sat listlessly under the shade of the tree, looking at Li Xu and others.
Looking around, the wheat nearby has almost been harvested. If my aunt hadn't been delayed by the college entrance examination, my grandparents should have finished harvesting by now.
After a moment, she raised her hand and wiped the sweat from her face.
She felt so hot even though she was lying motionless under the shade of the tree. How hard it must be for Li Xu and the others to work under the scorching sun.
Let’s build the greenhouse quickly, and when we make money, we won’t have to work so hard.
Seeing Ji Ziang looking at Li Xu and others working in the fields with curiosity, Ji Yuanyuan came up with an idea: "Second brother, let's go and help. If we finish the work in the fields earlier, we can go home earlier. Don't you want to see Uncle Zhang?"
When Ji Ziang heard Ji Yuanyuan's words, his eyes lit up instantly.
He pulled Ji Zixuan and said excitedly, "Brother, let's go and help."
Ji Zixuan stood up, took Ji Yuanyuan's little hand, followed Ji Ziang, and walked into the ground with one step deep and one step shallow.
In the fields, piles of wheat are piled together, golden yellow. As soon as you get close, you can smell the wheat fragrance.
"Mom, we're here to help. What do you need us to do?" Ji Ziang walked forward excitedly and asked.
Li Xu then realized that the three of them were coming. She straightened up and wiped the sweat off her face. "I don't need your help. Just go sit under the shade of the tree."
Seeing Ji Yuanyuan's face was red from the sun, she took off her hat and put it on Ji Yuanyuan's head: "Are you hungry?"
Ji Yuanyuan shook her head. Seeing that Li Zhiming had already harvested a lot of wheat, she hurried forward, piled the harvested wheat into a bundle, and then piled them together on the wheat pile not far behind her.
Ji Zixuan and Ji Ziang followed suit and did the same.
