After Qian Jingui and his family of three arrived home, Shen Nan did not forget to knock him: "I've told you, if you are soft-hearted towards the old Qian family again, I will divorce you, and you will never see Xiao Pigeon again. I will take her to live somewhere else, out of sight, out of mind."
Qian Jingui quickly responded, "I understand. I'm different now. I know I'm not the same as them. Let's just live our own lives from now on..."
But he hesitated and said, "But just now they said they were going to sue me in court and asked me to give them pension money. If the court really makes the ruling, we still have to pay it, right?"
Shen Nan responded: "Let's talk about it then. Anyway, you can't take the initiative to contact them. Also, I thought that when we save some more money, we will take Xiao Ge to study in the city so that the old Qian family can't find us."
If this had been said in the past, Qian Jingui would have definitely hesitated and felt immense pressure. But now, life at home was getting better and better, and moving to the city had given him a sense of purpose.
Qian Jingui immediately agreed. They could continue this small business in the city. Besides, Shen Nan had learned how to make many kinds of snacks, so he could also open another snack cart. With the couple each managing a stall, they would definitely earn more.
Another thing is that living in the city makes transportation more convenient, and it will be easier for him to go out and look for his children.
Moreover, he could stay away from the Qian family, so that they wouldn't act like scoundrels and ask for things from him.
While the couple was discussing things, Qian Baoge couldn't wait to put all her new clothes and shoes on the kang, took off her thick cotton-padded clothes, and put on her new clothes. Among them was a sweater top with a skirt, which Qian Baoge liked the most.
"Mom, Dad, let's chat later and see if I'm pretty or not?" Qian Baoge asked excitedly while wearing a little skirt with the back zipped up.
Qian Jingui and his wife smiled and said, "Beautiful! Our little pigeon looks beautiful in anything she wears!"
Over the past year, their family has been together most of the time, and the house is filled with laughter and joy, which has diluted the grief of losing their son.
But they never gave up looking for their son. During Qian Baoge's summer vacation, Qian Jingui went out for a month to visit places he had never been to before to inquire about the whereabouts of his child.
During the children's winter vacation, Qian Jingui went out for half a month again, asking around for news in nearby areas. Unfortunately, he still found nothing.
But no matter what, they earned money this year and had some savings, which finally gave them greater hope in life.
Being interrupted by his lovely daughter, the unhappiness brought by the Qian family disappeared.
Shen Nan let the child play by himself for a while while she went to prepare some food for the New Year the next day. Qian Jingui used this time to chop some unchopped firewood.
This year's Chinese New Year, their family finally had some festive atmosphere. Shen Nan put a pan of oil on the stove and fried some radish balls and meatballs, and also fried a box of spring rolls as a snack for lunch today.
She also bought some spare ribs and stewed them in a large iron pot in advance. She also cooked meat in another pot and used the broth from the meat to make the stew.
The family of three had a delicious lunch. After the meal, Shen Nan put up the Spring Festival couplets, blessing characters and window decorations that he had bought at the market.
This was the first time they felt like putting up red ribbons at home since their son was lost.
Now, Qian Jingui and Shen Nan are both without any relatives to rely on, and they don’t even need to visit relatives during the Chinese New Year.
That is, she would go to Shen Nan's mother's family to give some gifts to her parents, but she would not even pay attention to her other brothers. After all, these blood relatives, like the old Qian family, stood by and watched when she was in the most difficult time.
When the Qian family kicked Qian Jingui and his wife out, Shen Nan's sisters-in-law were afraid that Shen Nan would go back to her parents' home to take advantage of her, so they had already made it known that Shen Nan would never be allowed to live there again.
It was also because they were afraid that she would return to her parents' home that those brothers were willing to come forward and go to the Qian family to help Shen Nan and his wife get back the money they had deposited with Old Lady Qian.
The couple had lived frugally for over a decade, never having seen a stitch or thread from her family. Therefore, apart from fulfilling her daughter's obligations, she had no desire to reconcile with her brothers.
In the first two years, because Shen Nan did not buy things for her nephews and nieces when she returned to her mother's house, her sisters-in-law were very dissatisfied with Shen Nan.
After Shen Nan had a crazy fight with them, they never dared to say anything behind Shen Nan's back again.
Shen Nan rarely goes back to her parents' home. She used to go back every Chinese New Year, but now she only goes back during the Spring Festival. She only buys some food and drinks for her parents and doesn't care about anything else.
On New Year's Eve, Qian Jingui and his wife worked together to prepare ten dishes for good luck, symbolizing perfection. They also bought Qian Baoge her favorite orange juice.
Qian Baoge ran around the house and yard in her new clothes, occasionally eating a small piece of fried food her mother had prepared. Although she was young, she could clearly feel the changes in the family.
She thought that if her brother came back, the house would be more lively. However, she also knew that every time her brother was mentioned, her parents would frown. She could only hide her hope in her heart and pray silently.
On the second day of the Lunar New Year, Shen Nan returned to her parents' home as usual. She left without Qian Jingui and Qian Baoge; she went alone. When they were poor, no one in her family cared about her husband and children; they wouldn't even offer them a meal.
The things Shen Nan bought for her parents were not very fancy: a carton of milk, two bags of soy milk powder, and a box of fruit. It was pretty much the same in previous years, but this year she planned to give her parents another hundred yuan.
