The autumn harvest is over, and primary and secondary schools are on holiday for the busy farming season.
As soon as it gets light, villagers take their sickles, baskets, carrying poles, snakeskin bags, and water, and load up their threshing machines; almost the whole family goes to the fields.
The autumn harvest is in full swing, a vibrant and bustling activity.
No one in the village had the energy to gossip about other people's affairs. After harvesting the rice, it had to be dried and handed over as public grain. This was a big deal and could not be taken lightly. If the grain delivery task was not completed within the stipulated time, there would be a fine!
Fortunately, the weather has been kind to us; it hasn't rained much since autumn began.
Yu Qiuying's family has two mu of rice, but this year only three people are working on it: Zhou Jiadong is injured and can't exert himself, and Zhou Caixiang is in her senior year of high school and doesn't have a break for the busy farming season.
She borrowed Wang Xiuying's threshing machine, and Wang Xiuying, her husband, and her youngest son also came to help.
Six people worked from dawn till dusk and finished harvesting the rice in one day.
The next day, Yu Qiuying and the other two went to help Wang Xiuying's family for another day. The two families have been helping each other like this for many years. This saves a lot of time and allows them to harvest the rice faster. Many families in the village do this.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief only after the grain was handed over.
Yu Qiuying and the other two had all gotten darker and thinner. After the dried rice was stored in the granary, Yu Qiuying bought a chicken from Wang Xiuying's house and then went to the market to buy pork ribs. The family had a good meal together.
The rice harvest is over, but that doesn't mean life can be leisurely. There's still a lot of other work to be done in the fields. Farmers never have a leisurely day.
However, Yu Qiuying went to Dongguan Province after the New Year, and her family stopped farming, so she was much more relaxed than other families.
Zhou Cailian was still puzzled, "Mom, why haven't you gone to talk to them about the irrigation? Aren't we composting our land?"
The rice has been harvested, and the straw has been collected. Everyone else is busy burning rice straw, irrigating the fields, and composting it.
"I won't be farming next year. I plan to let your Aunt Xiuying farm all the land in my family. I'm going to Dongguan Province after the New Year." Yu Qiuying told Zhou Cailian, Zhou Jiadong, and Zhou Jiahong about her plans to go to Dongguan Province after the New Year.
The three of them were dumbfounded when they heard this.
"Mom, what are you going to Dongguan for? You... don't want this family anymore?" Zhou Cailian looked at Yu Qiuying blankly and helplessly, her face visibly panicked.
Zhou Jiadong was clearly also mistaken, and said in a panic, "Mom, Zhong Xiaolan and I have broken up. I told her not to come looking for me anymore. Really, I really have no intention of marrying her!"
Only Zhou Jiahong looked excited and longing. "Mom, take me with you to Dongguan! I'm worried about you being alone. Take me with you; I'm really good at fighting. If you run into bad guys outside, I can protect you!"
Yu Qiuying glared at him, annoyed. "You're supposed to protect me? You should be grateful if you don't get kidnapped."
These days, things are very chaotic outside. People who have never traveled far from home yearn for and dream about the outside world. They are all naive and ignorant, and they can be easily fooled.
"Mom, please don't do this! How can you abandon this family? What will we do if you leave..." Zhou Jiadong was so anxious he was about to cry. He thought the previous incident was over, but he never expected his mother to leave the family and abandon it!
Yu Qiuying gave him a cold look. "I would rather not abandon this family than abandon you."
Zhou Jiadong: "..."
“Mom…” Zhou Cailian nervously clenched her fingers. She couldn’t understand why her mother would suddenly go to Dongguan Province. What would she do there? Wouldn’t it be better to stay home and farm?
Seeing that she was also anxious, Yu Qiuying quickly explained, "I've already made up my mind. I'll go to Dongguan Province to set up a breakfast stall. You and Lao Wu will both come with me."
"Ah! That's great! I knew Mom wouldn't abandon me, hehe!" Zhou Jiahong's face turned red with excitement. Dongguan Province, I heard it's really rich and prosperous there!
Zhou Cailian hesitated for a moment, then said, "I...I'll go too..."
Zhou Jiadong was completely dumbfounded. "No, Mom, what about me?"
"What do you mean, 'you'? Aren't you studying architecture? Don't you want to quit and come with me to Dongguan?"
"But you're all leaving, what am I going to do?!" Zhou Jiadong was even more distraught than before. He was already worried enough about his mother going to Dongguan alone, but now she was telling him that his eldest sister and fifth brother were going with her. What about him? What was he going to do?!
"What do you mean, what are you going to do? Do you think you're three years old?" Yu Qiuying rolled her eyes at him. That's why she said he wasn't good enough for Qiu Xingcui. Look at his spineless appearance. He's already twenty-one, but he's still like a baby. He has no sense of responsibility at all!
