Chapter 47 Defense Upgrade

Wei Ming's roar stopped outside the door because Jiang Ruan thought he was making too much noise and kicked him and his belongings out.

The remaining few of Wei Ming's men watched in horror as everything happened in the blink of an eye, their faces pale with fright and unable to stand still.

"Do you need me to give you a ride?" Jiang Ruan's emotionless voice rang out as she surveyed the remaining group without a trace of emotion.

"No need, we can manage on our own." The people here were probably used to Wei Ming's usual arrogance and domineering attitude, and they just watched coldly without intervening.

But they weren't blind; they saw exactly what had just happened.

They had expected the woman to punish them as well, but seeing that she had no such intention, they quickly ran out after her.

"Shouldn't we kill them? They've gone too far. Letting them go like this is too lenient." Zhang Yang came out of the room. Wan Mei had already healed An Xia's injuries and was pushing him out to help.

"Kill them?" Jiang Ruan scoffed. "Killing them would be too good for them."

Jiang Ruan didn't explain much, but instead looked at a closed door on the second floor.

Zhang Yang knew that she was worried her parents were scared, and even more afraid that they were in danger. "I checked on them, they are fine, sleeping soundly, nothing's wrong."

"Li Ming and Jiang Yan were the same; only a few female comrades suffered minor injuries. Including the ones outside..."

Reminded by him, Jiang Ruan looked at the people lying outside, still breathing amidst the pools of blood.

She quickly called out to Zhang Yang and ran out. Oh no! She had been careless and thought they were probably dead. Then she came in and saw An Xia and the other two being treated like this. She was so angry that she chopped off the man's hands and sprinkled some powder on him—powder that attracts zombies and is enough to wipe out the entire gang.

It seems he's still breathing; those wriggling little hands indicate he's holding on for the last breath.

"Zhang Yang, call 120 quickly, and also contact 110 to arrest these people who are gathering to cause trouble and attempting to vandalize and loot."

The apocalypse has only just begun, so the restrictions on communication systems aren't too severe yet. There's been a brief period of cooling followed by warming, with day-night temperature differences reaching 40-50 degrees Celsius. Human survival, though as difficult and helpless as it was during the pandemic decades ago, still offers a glimmer of hope.

In addition, Jiang Ruan had just used her healing magic to save her parents, which had consumed too much energy, and she simply couldn't save even one more life.

Although she wanted to help, she was powerless to do so and could only ask the hospital for assistance.

"Wait a minute!" Jiang Ruan stopped Zhang Yang from dialing the number, thought for a moment and said, "They are from the national investigation team, and should be supervised and treated by the state. However, the situation is special now, and many things are not as simple as they seem on the surface. So, you just need to say that you were involved in a fight or brawl, and don't know anything about their identities."

Jiang Ruan knew that the government always valued secrecy in its dealings. Since the group had come to her in the middle of the night and gotten injured at her doorstep, she had to explain things in advance to avoid arousing suspicion and getting into unnecessary trouble.

"That makes sense, I understand."

Within ten minutes, an ambulance and a police car arrived one after the other.

Those men were treated as innocent victims and carried onto stretchers, then taken away in two ambulances.

Three police cars pulled up at the entrance and began questioning the people in front of the door one by one. In particular, the fact that each of them was carrying a knife made the lead officer, Xu Zhi, very excited. "Not bad, not bad, all of this is almost a first-class merit. I really hit the jackpot this time."

"Quickly, take them all away! Take them all to the station and have them explain why they're here, who sent them, and what their purpose is!"

Then he walked up to Jiang Ruan and immediately put on a warm smile. "Miss Jiang Ruan, we meet again. It seems you've run into quite a bit of trouble this time."

"Thankfully, I feel much more at ease with Chief Xu around." Jiang Ruan thought of her previous encounter with him when her parents were in a car accident, the police arrested the driver, Hu Lai, and asked her to come over to find out more.

The imposing man, standing at 1.8 meters tall, made Hu Lai want to cry from his sheer presence. Naturally, Hu Lai confessed everything without any reservations.

Jiang Ruan was only released from the police station after the interrogation was over. Xu Zhi had driven her there and asked her to put in a good word for her with An Xia's father so that they could take things further.

That was the only time they ever met.

Jiang Ruan thought to herself that she hadn't expected to meet him again. It seemed that nothing good ever came of seeing him. She figured he was capable of rising to the top without any obstacles, even without her speaking up for him.

"Look at what you're saying. We police officers are here to serve the people, which of course includes doing everything we can to make citizens happy. Alright, I'm heading back now. I'll catch up with you another time."

Xu Zhi urged everyone to hurry up, got into the car, and left in a rush.

Jiang Ruan knew that he was eager to make a contribution. With so many people and witnesses and physical evidence, they couldn't deny it. In the end, he would definitely be doing Xu Zhi a favor.

"Okay, now we're all done, let's go back and rest." Zhang Yang yawned and was about to go back to rest when Jiang Ruan stopped him, "No rush, clean up all this filth before you go."

The filth Jiang Ruan was referring to was naturally what Wei Ming had left behind.

"Well, alright. A real man can bend and stretch, and he can do a good job. This little bit of work isn't even enough for me to show off my skills." Zhang Yang was also a bit of a germaphobe, and he was very annoyed by the scene. Even if Jiang Ruan hadn't said anything, he was going to tidy up.

Of course, I was definitely tired. I went for a walk around the zombie building in the middle of the night instead of sleeping. Although I awakened my superpowers, I was still tired after mentally exhausting myself.

He took a rag and began cleaning diligently, while Jiang Ruan looked around the entire mall.

A lot of thought was put into the original construction and renovation. Each household on the first and second floors is controlled by a special combination lock, in order to protect the names of the people in the house in case of an emergency.

Unexpectedly, the combination lock was activated so early in the apocalypse, which means that the house's defense level is still too low and does not meet the ideal requirements.

Even if An Chun made a mistake, it shouldn't have come to this. At the very least, there should be facial recognition so that even if the door is open, unauthorized people cannot enter.

Only by reaching this level will it be beneficial for future actions.

Moreover, judging by the timeline, a very small number of zombies will soon be immune to sunlight, and that will be the true apocalypse.

The current minor disturbances are merely a response to what everyone initially thought was a joke; the subsequent large-scale death and alienation will be the true beginning of the apocalypse.

[Ding! Welcome, Master, to activate the defense equipment. The current defense capability is at level one. Would you like to cover a fixed area?]
