Chapter 15 Calling for Help

Gu Yanlin hurriedly got dressed, and the three of them gathered in the living room. As soon as they opened the door, a chilly breeze hit them. Gu Yanzhi glanced down at the thermometer in his hand; in just a short while, the temperature had dropped another 5 degrees Celsius.

Without much delay, the three hurriedly left the room.

As they went downstairs, Gu Yanzhi took out a gong from his spatial storage and stuffed it into Gu Yanlin's hand.

"clang"

"clang"

"clang"

"clang"

Gu Yanlin took the lead, walking ahead and striking the gong in his hand as he went.

Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao followed behind, and when they reached the 16th floor, they each wrapped their hands in their sleeves and banged on the doors of two apartments on the 16th floor.

Besides the Kochi family of four who originally lived on the 16th floor, Kobayashi has also moved here with her daughter and mother. They moved in early and chose the top floor with available rooms. Both families have elderly members, so the two elderly people have someone to talk to.

Fortunately, both families had children, and they were naturally alert in the middle of the night, so they were already awake when they heard the broken gong outside. Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao knocked a few times, and both doors were opened one after the other.

As soon as the door opened, heart-wrenching cries and soft soothing voices could be heard coming from both rooms.

The clattering gong not only woke up the adults but also frightened the little ones from both families, who were now crying pitifully, which was heartbreaking.

Gu Yanzhi awkwardly scratched his head, quickly explained the current situation to Gao Zhi and Xiao Lin, told them to wear more clothes and keep warm, and then went downstairs with Song Zhao.

Gu Yanlin was no longer on the 15th floor. Sister Li, who had just moved into apartment 1501 on the 15th floor, and her father were standing at the door of apartment 1502, banging on it desperately.

"Xiao Zhong, Xiao Meng, wake up! Wake up quickly!"

"Sister Li, Grandpa Li, are Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng still not up?"

Gu Yanzhi saw this scene as soon as she went downstairs and asked a question.

"Xiao Gu, you're downstairs? Yan Lin is coming down. We can't wake Xiao Zhong and Xiao Meng, could they be frozen?" Sister Li said, still knocking on the door of room 1502.

Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng are also a young couple who recently moved into Building 10. They are both quite young and are senior students at the same university. One is a sophomore and the other is a freshman. They moved from the 18th floor of Building 1 in their community.

The two weren't originally residents of their neighborhood, but they were incredibly unlucky. On the day of the flood, they had come to check out the renovations of Zhong Junfeng's relatives who lived in another city, and were taking pictures to show them. The rain was so heavy that they planned to stay overnight before leaving, but they ended up being trapped inside the neighborhood.

When they finally found a kind person who could take them back to school, they learned that their school had been flooded and they didn't know where the students had been moved to.

The two had neither stockpiled much food nor owned a boat, so they had been relying on helping their neighbors by hitching a ride on their boats to find supplies, barely managing to make ends meet.

To make matters worse, the construction team hired by their relatives did a terrible job, and their house started leaking during the continuous heavy rain. With so much rain, they couldn't find anyone to help repair the house. It was only a small leak, barely habitable at first.

A few days ago, probably due to prolonged waterlogging, part of their roof collapsed, making the house completely uninhabitable.

After asking someone to express their request to move over, the residents on the 10th floor agreed, and with everyone's help, they moved over all the usable items.

When they moved in, the bed was flooded, and the bedding was unusable. Everyone helped them move the bed, and the bedding was cobbled together from the shared sheets and blankets of the residents of Building 10. However, they only used spare summer bedding from their own homes, and the blankets and mattresses weren't very thick, which was why Sister Li was worried.

The four knocked on the door for several more minutes before they heard a response from inside.

The door was quickly opened, and two people, wrapped in blankets, stood trembling in the doorway, their breath steaming as they spoke.

"Sister Li, Grandpa Li, Sister Yanzhi, Brother-in-law, what's wrong? Why is it suddenly so cold?"

The two of them had only come to look at the house on short notice and hadn't brought any warm clothes. They had only brought two thick coats in case it rained, which should have been enough for a normal winter in City C. They didn't expect the temperature to drop so quickly, so they could only huddle together and keep warm under their not-so-thick blankets.

"Sis, wake them all up."

While Gu Yanzhi was explaining to the two, Gu Yanlin also ran up from downstairs. The two remaining households downstairs were Zhang Qian's and Zhuang Nanyang's families, who had already been woken up by the commotion upstairs. Gu Yanlin managed to wake them up without much effort.

Gu Yanzhi glanced at the thermometer in his hand; the temperature had already dropped another 10 degrees Celsius in such a short time. Fortunately, everyone was awake. The rapid drop in temperature was due to the fact that younger people, with their stronger constitutions and better bodily regulation, were at risk. Elderly people, being weaker, were more susceptible to sudden hypothermia, which could easily lead to coma or even death.

"Everyone's here. My mom boiled some hot water; have some to warm yourselves up."

As they were talking, Kochi came downstairs carrying a kettle of hot water.

Upon hearing this, Sister Li quickly went back home, found some cups, and handed one to everyone present.

Although it's just her and her father living in her house, it's very lively during holidays. They prepare a lot of things for the house, and even after moving to Building 10, they couldn't bear to throw anything away. Instead, they moved everything over with everyone's help.

At this time, everything is a resource, and you never know when it might come in handy. Therefore, although there was a lot of stuff when helping Sister Li move, no one complained. Instead, they searched Sister Li's old house and brought everything that could be moved. They even tried to unload and move the difficult-to-move items.

"Thank you," the young couple said, clutching the cups and trembling as the water was poured for Yin Meng and her partner.

"I have two sets of thermal underwear at home. If you don't mind, I'll go get them for you." Looking at the two of them, Gu Yanzhi wasn't a heartless person. Although she had experienced too much hardship and pain in the ten years since the apocalypse, these things had nothing to do with the people in front of her.

The neighborhood in Building 10 is currently harmonious, and the neighbors are all warm and considerate. When one family encounters a problem, the others lend a helping hand, including the families that joined later. Although we haven't established a revolutionary friendship with them yet, we can't bear to see them suffering in the cold, so we help them with these small things whenever we can.

"No problem, no problem at all, thank you so much, Sister Yanzhi!" The young couple were deeply moved. In this kind of weather, thick clothes would soon become a scarce resource, and they were freezing cold. What right did they have to complain? They wouldn't mind if someone was willing to give them something even if it was taken from a dead person.
