Chapter 16 Calling for Help 2

When Gu Yanzhi came downstairs with her clothes, only Zhong Junfeng, Yin Meng, and Song Zhao remained on the 15th floor.

"Where are they?" Gu Yanzhi asked casually as he handed them the clothes.

"Uncle Zhang came up and led everyone outside to call for help. Yan Lin went with him."

After Uncle Zhang finished tidying up, he came upstairs and saw everyone gathered on the 15th floor, knowing that everyone in their building had woken up. Thinking that the temperature was getting lower and lower, and that he didn't know how many people would be in trouble in this weather, he originally wanted to borrow a gong from Gu Yanlin and go to other buildings to shout and save as many people as he could. Unexpectedly, everyone was very enthusiastic and responded to go out and rescue people together.

When Gu Yanlin suggested going together, Song Zhao didn't stop him. He had just graduated from high school. Although he was precocious and had more experience than most people, he was still inexperienced and full of expectations and aspirations for the world, hoping to make some contributions.

Since there was no real danger involved, Song Zhao saw no need to stop him from doing it.

"Thank you so much, Sister Yanzhi!" The young couple were so touched that they almost cried after putting on the down jackets and thermal pants that Gu Yanzhi had given them. The cold weather had almost frozen them, and it took them a while to warm up after putting on the clothes.

After recovering, Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng decided to go down and participate in the call for help. They had received help from the people in Building 10 and had no way to repay them, but they hoped to do their part to help others.

Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao went downstairs together. They didn't want to participate in the activity; they just wanted to go down and see what was happening outside.

Before the extreme cold arrived, the water outside had already risen to the middle of the 10th floor. Tonight, the temperature dropped rapidly, and the water turned into a thick layer of ice.

Gu Yanzhi stepped on it and bounced a few times, making a crisp sound, and it was frozen solid.

Gu Yanzhi stood in the corner, listening to the distant shouts, gongs, and clanging of iron basins. The faint light of a flashlight shone on the ice, intertwining with the reflection of the ice. Gu Yanzhi held Song Zhao's hand; with someone important to him by his side, Gu Yanzhi felt an unparalleled peace and security.

After standing downstairs for a while, Gu Yanzhi felt her body begin to feel cold and stiff. She took a deep breath, and the cold air entered her lungs, making her feel even colder.

"Let's go back." Noticing that Gu Yanzhi felt cold, Song Zhao tightened his grip on Gu Yanzhi's hand, took her hand, and turned to walk towards the stairwell.

"Phew, home is still the most comfortable place."

As soon as she entered the house, Gu Yanzhi collapsed onto the huge sofa in the living room. This was her favorite thing to do after her rebirth. Lying on the sofa like a salted fish, she felt incredibly relaxed and comfortable.

The heating in the house had been turned on before leaving, and the room was now comfortably warm. Gu Yanzhi's body gradually warmed up, and the chill disappeared.

The comfortable temperature made her head start to feel foggy after lying on the sofa for a while. She was woken up by the cold before midnight, and now it was past 3 a.m. As soon as she relaxed, the fatigue and drowsiness overwhelmed her.

"Zhizhi, wake up." Gu Yanzhi was dozing off on the sofa and was almost asleep when Song Zhao gently patted her awake, helped her up, and brought the cup in his hand to her lips.

As soon as she entered the house, Song Zhao went to the kitchen to cook ginger soup. Although she was dressed warmly, she had been outside for a long time in the cold weather, so drinking some ginger soup could help ward off the cold and prevent a cold.

Song Zhao always remembered Gu Yanzhi's story: in his previous life, on the first day of extreme cold, Gu Yanzhi developed a high fever because he didn't keep warm in time, and he died on the way to find medicine for Gu Yanzhi.

He didn't care about his own life or death, but in this cold weather, Gu Yanzhi had a high fever and no medicine, and he didn't know how much suffering he had endured to finally come to his senses.

Although this life is completely different now, and they have taken timely measures to keep warm and prepared enough medicine, Song Zhao is still worried about Gu Yanzhi's health.

"Drink some ginger soup before you sleep."

Gu Yanzhi finished the cup of ginger soup with Song Zhao's help and continued to doze off on the sofa.

When Song Zhao finished cleaning up the kitchen and came out, Gu Yanzhi was already fast asleep.

Song Zhao gently picked up the sleeping person from the sofa and slowly walked back to the room. Gu Yanzhi subconsciously hugged Song Zhao, didn't wake up, snuggled in his arms and continued to sleep.

Song Zhao carefully placed Gu Yanzhi on the bed, covered her with a thick quilt, and turned on the electric blanket, selecting a suitable temperature. Gu Yanzhi felt the comfort and warmth of the bed, smacked her lips, and seemed to drift off into a sweet dream.

Song Zhao sat quietly by the bed, gazing at the face of the person she loved most, feeling a soft warmth deep within her heart. At that moment, all her worries and anxieties vanished.

After an unknown amount of time, Song Zhao heard the sound of the living room door opening. She then stretched her stiff body and stepped out of her room.

After gently closing the door, Song Zhao whispered to Gu Yanlin, who was changing his shoes at the door, "Zhizhi is asleep. There's ginger soup in the kitchen. Drink some before you go to sleep."

Knowing that Gu Yanlin had hated ginger soup since he was a child, Song Zhao emphasized again, "You must drink it and you're not allowed to secretly pour it out."

"Okay, brother-in-law, you should get some rest too," Gu Yanlin nodded and replied softly.

"By the way, brother-in-law, remember to get up early tomorrow." Seeing Gu Yanlin heading towards the kitchen, Song Zhao was about to turn around and go back to her room to rest when Gu Yanlin called out to her.

"Uncle Zhang guesses the temperature will definitely keep dropping, it'll get colder and colder. Tomorrow, before everyone realizes what's happening, let's go out and collect as much firewood and other things that can keep us warm. That way we'll have a better chance of getting through this," Gu Yanlin paused and continued explaining. "I agreed to go out with Uncle Zhang tomorrow. I think we need to make our act convincing; if this weather lasts this long, it'll be hard to explain how we've managed to hold on without firewood."

"Hmm, what time tomorrow?"

"At 7 o'clock, Uncle Zhang said we should try to leave as early as possible."

"Okay, I'll set an alarm. It's past 4 a.m. now, you should go and get some rest, you only have a few hours left to sleep."

Song Zhao couldn't help but admire Uncle Zhang's keen insight; they had truly made the right choice in selecting this unsung building manager. To predict the temperature would continue to drop based on just a few hours of data, and to react promptly by thinking of collecting heating supplies—his foresight and responsiveness were truly remarkable.

While they were talking, Gu Yanlin finished his ginger soup. After drinking it, his mouth was filled with an unpleasant ginger taste, so he gulped down a large glass of water before returning to his room.

After returning to his room, Gu Yanlin first turned on the electric blanket, then found his thick quilt and spread it on the bed before changing into his thick pajamas and going to bed.
