Chapter 33 Slack Off
The next morning, Gu Yanlin got up early and put on warm clothes in his room.
The living room heating wasn't on, and Gu Yanlin could feel the temperature drop again as soon as he stepped out of his room. Looking out the living room window, he could see snowflakes beginning to fall sporadically.
Gu Yanzhi quickly turned on the heating in the living room, then took out the breakfast that had been put in the refrigerator last night. The refrigerator didn't need to be plugged in; in this weather, places without heating are natural refrigerators.
The steaming hot soy milk I put in last night had turned into a lump when I took it out.
The steamed buns were frozen solid; one of them could kill someone if it hit them.
Gu Yanlin turned on the induction cooker and heated up the breakfast first, then boiled a kettle of water. Before leaving, he found a thermos, filled it with hot water, and went out.
I put on my down jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf, put my thermos in my backpack, and packed two self-heating hot pots for lunch.
Before leaving, he hesitated for a moment, then tucked the axe into his belt, unsure if the government would provide him with tools.
As soon as he stepped outside, Gu Yanlin couldn't help but sneeze; the weather was just too cold.
Even without the heating on in the living room, it's still much warmer than outside.
Gu Yanlin quickly adjusted the temperature of his clothes a few degrees, and only then did he feel comfortable.
As I was going downstairs, I ran into Kobayashi and Kochi, a couple who were leaving the house, on the 16th floor.
"Good morning, Brother Lin, Brother Gao, Sister Sisi."
Good morning, Yan Lin.
All three of them were wearing thick down jackets, bundled up like penguins, and started shivering as soon as they stepped outside.
"This awful weather, it's so cold!" Liu Sisi kept breathing out warm air, rubbing her hands together, and jumping up and down the stairs a few times, making a dull thud as she complained.
"They really don't give people a way to survive," Kobayashi nodded and complained along with him.
The group walked downstairs complaining all the way. Uncle Zhang, who lived on the 13th floor, heard the commotion and quickly came out of his apartment to welcome them in. "No need to take off your shoes, come in and find a place to sit."
"Let's warm up inside for a bit, then we'll set off once everyone's here."
In Uncle Zhang's living room, there were two stainless steel basins filled with firewood that had been brought in the day before yesterday. This is how most families heat their homes nowadays.
Zhang Qian and Aunt Zhang were also dressed warmly, sitting around the brazier warming their hands.
Upon seeing Gu Yanlin and his group, Zhang Qian waved to them, gesturing for them to sit down.
Aunt Zhang made room for the young people and moved to the fire pit next to her, listening to the young people chat and laugh with Uncle Zhang.
Soon after, the rest of the people arrived.
Uncle Zhang extinguished the fire in the brazier to make sure it wouldn't reignite before everyone went outside.
One person from Squad 532 stayed behind to take care of Chu Guodong, while the rest of the team went out with them.
They also went on a mission today. Because they were staying in Building 10, their recent missions have all been scheduled in Songshan District.
The hospital staff start work earlier than other employees. In the morning, Team 532 sends two people to escort Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng to the temporary hospital, and they will be brought back in the evening.
Tao Qi has his own job and cannot come to Chu State East every day.
Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng are now Chu Guodong's personal doctors. They change his dressings twice a day, morning and evening, and report his injury status to Tao Qi in a timely manner. Tao Qihui then modifies the treatment plan based on their descriptions.
Therefore, for the sake of their captain, Squad 532 took the initiative to protect Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng.
When I went outside, the sky, which had been dotted with light snowflakes in the morning, had turned into a heavy snowfall, making the weather feel even colder.
Braving the wind and snow, the group arrived at the Songshan District Government. The registration area from yesterday had been changed to four windows: one for each of the two job postings, one for the shelter, and one for information.
Once they arrived here, Squad 532 left to carry out their mission.
Gu Yanlin glanced around; each line had a considerable number of people, shivering from the cold, their lips slightly purple. He rubbed his hands together, trying to warm himself up.
After waiting in line for almost an hour, it was finally Gu Yanlin and his group's turn. The staff at the ice-breaking window apologized to them, explaining that the ice-breaking work had to be canceled due to snowfall, and the only job available today was logging.
According to meteorological experts, today's snowfall will be heavy, making ice-breaking work difficult. As soon as a hole is broken in the ice, it gets blocked by snow, greatly increasing the difficulty. Therefore, this work has been temporarily cancelled, and logging will be the only option.
A team needs 10-15 people. Building 10, excluding Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng, has exactly 11 people, which meets the requirements for forming a team. They whispered among themselves and decided that since they were already there, they might as well just get started.
Uncle Zhang, as the team leader, and the staff agreed to take on this task.
Someone will take them to the designated logging location shortly.
The staff then asked if we needed any tools.
Ropes are provided free of charge, but axes need to be rented. The price is very reasonable; an axe can be rented with just one chopped log. You can pay on credit on the first day and return it when the balance is tallied in the evening.
Of the 11 people in Building 10, only Gu Yanlin and Uncle Zhuang brought axes, and they rented 9 more axes.
The person who led the way happened to be an acquaintance, Zhao Rui from Team 532.
Their team's next task was to lead the daily work teams, and they themselves couldn't be idle; they had to participate in the team's work, and their pay was the same as the team's.
Led by Zhao Rui, the logging team from Building 10 walked for almost another hour before reaching Songshan, where many teams were already working.
Zhao Rui greeted the people he knew and then chose a quiet spot as the logging site for Building 10 today, and began his work.
Meanwhile, Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao slept until after 12 o'clock, and after playing around in bed for a while, they finally got up feeling refreshed.
When I got up, it was almost 2 o'clock, and the snow outside was already above a person's ankles.
The living room heater had been turned on when Gu Yanlin left that morning, so the temperature was now quite comfortable. The two of them didn't need to change clothes; they came out of their room in their pajamas.
I couldn't tell if it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner; in short, it was a very lavish meal.
The two chose four dishes: braised pork, braised eggplant, stir-fried green bean strips, and a stir-fried vegetable dish that is a favorite of people in City C.
After dinner, Gu Yanzhi took out two cups of milk tea, popcorn, and some random snacks. The two of them lay on the sofa, leaned against each other, and watched a movie.
I enjoyed a rare moment of leisure.
