Chapter 22: Stockpiling Weapons, Making Cooked Food, and Preparing Fuel

With only 10 days left until the end of the world, every minute and every second has become incredibly precious, and the family is racing against time to carry out their respective tasks.

Dad threw himself into the work of stockpiling weapons. He first went to the basement's designated weapons storage area, where some guns he had collected before were located, but he knew more preparation was needed. He opened an old box containing an antique rifle with a unique wooden stock. Although it was quite old, Dad's meticulous care ensured it was still functional. Dad carefully wiped the gun, feeling its texture, as if reuniting with an old friend. He expertly inspected every part of the gun, from the trigger to the scope, leaving no detail overlooked. He took out a special lubricant and gently applied it to the key areas to ensure the gun would operate smoothly in use.

Next, Dad began organizing the ammunition. He had some homemade ammunition, which he had spent a lot of time preparing beforehand. The ammunition was neatly arranged in metal boxes, each bullet gleaming with a cold metallic sheen. Dad carefully counted the ammunition, categorizing them by type and caliber, and meticulously recording the details on a list. Besides firearms and ammunition, Dad also prepared some melee weapons. He picked up a meticulously forged longsword, its blade light yet strong, crafted by a professional artisan. Dad swung it a few times, feeling its balance and power, then carefully sharpened the blade with a whetstone. The whirring sound of the sword against the whetstone was like a battle cry.

He hadn't forgotten to prepare some protective gear. He took out several bulletproof vests and helmets from the cabinet; these were high-quality items that could protect his family's safety in a critical moment. Dad checked every joint and protective layer to ensure they were undamaged or defective. He placed the protective gear in an easily accessible location, and also placed some first-aid kits nearby, containing bandages, disinfectant, and other first-aid supplies, just in case.

In the warm kitchen, Mom, wearing an apron, was fully engaged in preparing cooked food. She first took a large piece of fresh pork from the refrigerator—a high-quality ingredient she had stocked up on earlier. Mom cut the pork into evenly sized cubes, preparing to make braised pork. She turned on the stove, poured a suitable amount of oil into the pot, and when the oil was slightly smoking, she added scallions, ginger, and garlic to sauté until fragrant, instantly filling the kitchen with a rich aroma. Next, Mom put the pork cubes into the pot, and with a sizzling sound, the pork rolled in the hot oil, gradually turning golden brown. Mom skillfully added soy sauce, sugar, cooking wine, and other seasonings, stir-fried evenly, then poured in a suitable amount of water, covered the pot, and let the braised pork simmer slowly over low heat, the rich aroma of meat filling the kitchen.

Mom didn't stop what she was doing; she started preparing to make more sausages. She minced the pork, added various spices and salt, and mixed it all together according to her unique recipe. Then, she took out sausage casings, carefully stuffed the meat filling into them, and tied them into sections with string. The finished sausages were hung in a well-ventilated place to dry; these sausages were not only delicious but could also be preserved for a long time. She also used the remaining ingredients to make some braised dishes, including braised eggs, braised tofu, and braised chicken legs. She boiled the eggs, cut the tofu into small pieces, cleaned the chicken legs, and then slowly simmered them in the braising liquid. The aroma of the braising liquid permeated every ingredient, making one's mouth water.

Su Yao drove towards a gas station on the outskirts of the city. Along the way, she saw people on the streets continuing their normal lives, completely unaware of the impending apocalypse, and a sense of melancholy washed over her. Upon arriving at the gas station, Su Yao found a long queue already formed; people seemed to sense some unease and were stocking up on gasoline. Su Yao remained calm. Relying on her prior preparations and connections, she found the gas station manager. After some communication, she was able to purchase gasoline with priority.

Su Yao quickly picked up the fuel cans and began filling them with gasoline. The sound of the gasoline flowing through the cans felt to her like a lifeline being injected. She carried the cans of gasoline to the car, carefully securing them to prevent leaks during transport. After filling up, Su Yao rushed to several other places where gasoline might be stored. In an abandoned factory warehouse, she found several large gasoline storage tanks. Although these tanks were old, the gasoline inside was still usable. Su Yao struggled to transfer the gasoline from the storage tanks to her own fuel cans.

While collecting gasoline, Su Yao didn't forget about diesel. She knew diesel was crucial for the generator in the safe house. She found diesel storage points at some construction sites and factories, and carefully collected the diesel there as well. Every drop of fuel was hard-won, and Su Yao knew its value in the apocalypse. She guarded the fuel like a precious treasure, speeding towards the safe house, where her family's hope lay.
