Chapter 268 A Brief respite and an unknown journey

Su Yao shared the milk tea popsicles and ice cream she had stockpiled before the apocalypse with her parents. The slight coolness in the unbearably hot safe house was like a gentle breeze, briefly dispelling the heat and gloom that shrouded everyone's hearts.

"Yaoyao, these things are finite. What will we do after this?" The mother licked the ice cream scoop, her eyes filled with worry and unease about the future.

Su Yao frowned slightly and gently snapped the popsicle stick in her hand: "Mom, I know. I just had the system search the surrounding area for anything usable, and we're waiting for news."

Shortly after, the system's cold electronic voice rang in Su Yao's mind: "Four kilometers due east of here, there is an old swimming pool. There may be a large amount of pool water remaining inside, as well as a complete water circulation and purification device. If you can take it over, it can solve your immediate problem. However, the place has been turned into a nest of high-temperature mutated creatures, and there are also turbulent energy currents, making it extremely dangerous."

Su Yao stood up abruptly and said resolutely, "Dad, Mom, I'll go and find out right away. Only by acquiring more resources can we ensure our family's safety." After saying that, she went straight to where the equipment was kept and began to carefully select items.

First, she donned the dark, heat-resistant cloak that could withstand extreme heat and weaken some of the attack's power. Then, she tightened a spirit belt around her waist that could store and amplify her special abilities. Next, she took out a pair of spirit daggers made of fine steel with poisoned blades from her spatial storage. These were obtained during a perilous exploration of ruins; they were incredibly sharp, capable of cutting through gold and jade. She also carried several bottles of spirit spring potions that could instantly restore physical strength and special abilities, as well as several spirit defense talismans that could generate protective barriers in critical moments. With everything in place, Su Yao activated her special ability shield, and a layer of dark blue crystalline light emanated from her body, resembling a protective divine aura.

"Yaoyao, be careful in everything you do, and never act rashly." Her father handed her a kettle full of water, his eyes full of concern and reluctance.

Su Yao took the water bottle, hung it on her waist, and nodded slightly: "Dad, Mom, don't worry. I will definitely return safely." After saying that, she lightly touched the ground with her toes and darted out of the safe house like an arrow, speeding off in the due east direction.

The moment she stepped out of the safe house, a wave of intense heat, like a raging torrent, swept over Su Yao like a tidal wave. The air felt like it had been set ablaze, scorching and viscous, making her lungs feel like they were on fire with every breath. Su Yao endured the intense heat, activating her supernatural shield and pushing herself to the limit. Her feet left shallow footprints in the ground, and billowing dust rose behind her.

The entire journey was a scene of utter devastation. The earth was cracked and crisscrossed, like the gaping maws of ravenous beasts, spewing forth scorching lava like winding, crimson pythons. The roadside trees were charred black, their broken branches and trunks reduced to dust by the intense heat, scattering in the wind. The sun hung high in the sky, casting endless, scorching rays, seemingly intent on reducing everything in the world to ashes.

Halfway there, a sharp screech suddenly came from ahead. Su Yao's heart tightened, and she looked up to see a flock of mutated birds, their bodies engulfed in raging flames, resembling eagles but with enormous bodies, swooping down from the sky like a dark cloud. These mutated birds had wingspans of over ten feet, sharp beaks like hooks, talons like knives, and their eyes flashed with a bloodthirsty ferocity.

Seeing this, Su Yao quickly stopped, forming a strange hand seal in front of her chest while chanting incantations. In an instant, the energy shield around her shone brightly, transforming into an indestructible crystal wall. At the same time, she drew her pair of energy daggers from her waist, their blades gleaming with a ghostly light and exuding a chilling aura.

The mutated birds arrived in an instant, swooping down on Su Yao like raindrops. Their sharp beaks and claws, carrying intense heat and flames, tore through the air with piercing screechs. Su Yao's figure flashed, weaving through the flock of birds like a ghost. The dagger in her hand transformed into two cold lights, thrusting and parrying with pinpoint accuracy, each strike hitting the mutated birds' vital points. In an instant, blood and feathers flew everywhere, and the mutated birds crashed to the ground, turning into burning fireballs.

However, the mutated birds were numerous and fearless. Although Su Yao had tried her best to kill most of them, many still broke through her defenses and pounced on her. Su Yao couldn't dodge in time, and her left arm was slashed by the sharp claws of a mutated bird, instantly tearing open her skin and drawing blood. She groaned, enduring the excruciating pain, and took out a spirit-protecting talisman from her spatial storage. She chanted a spell rapidly, and the talisman instantly transformed into a golden light shield, enveloping her within it. The mutated birds crashed into the light shield, sparks flying, but they could no longer harm her in the slightest.

Taking advantage of the moment, Su Yao retrieved the spiritual spring potion from her waist and tilted her head back to gulp it down. Instantly, a cool and soothing sensation spread from her throat throughout her body, rapidly alleviating the pain in her wounds, and quickly restoring her strength and abilities. After recovering some of her energy, she removed the light shield and charged back into the mutated bird horde, unleashing all her skills in a desperate battle against the birds.

After a fierce battle, Su Yao finally slayed all the mutated birds. Exhausted and panting, her clothes were tattered and stained with blood. But she knew this was no time to rest; unknown dangers awaited her ahead. So, after a brief respite, she continued her arduous journey towards the old swimming pool.

Finally, the old swimming pool came into view. The building was dilapidated from the high temperature, its exterior walls mottled, cracked, and scorched. Su Yao cautiously stepped inside, and a stench and stuffiness hit her, making her feel nauseous.

The pool water was almost gone, murky, and emitted a foul stench. Su Yao activated the system's detection function, carefully searching along the edge of the pool for any trace of the water circulation and purification device. In a dark room in a corner of the pool, she finally found the device, but it had stopped working, and some parts were severely damaged.

Su Yao crouched down, carefully examining the damage to the device, pondering a way to repair it. Just then, she suddenly felt a powerful pressure coming from behind her. Su Yao's heart skipped a beat, and she turned around abruptly, only to see a huge, mutated water python covered in sharp scales coiled at the entrance of the dark room, its lantern-sized eyes fixed on her, its tongue flicking and emitting a threatening hiss.
