Chapter 8 Special Material Collection

Su Yao's stockpiling efforts are still in full swing. Each new type of supply is like a piece of a puzzle, filling in a crucial part of her post-apocalyptic survival blueprint.

She visited a taxidermy shop, where there was a large stock of preservatives and sealing materials. These preservatives are used to extend the shelf life of food, especially meat and some perishable foods. She carefully selected several preservatives that were less harmful to the human body and highly effective, and also collected many airtight glass jars and special rubber sealing rings. These glass jars can be used to store processed food, and together with the sealing rings, they create a near-perfect airtight environment, preventing the intrusion of air and bacteria.

Next, Su Yao found a new target at a laboratory supply store. She bought a large number of microscope slides and coverslips; these seemingly simple items could be used in the apocalypse to check for microorganisms in water sources or whether food had spoiled. She also selected some simple microscopes; with microscopes and slides, she could monitor the surrounding environment at a microscopic level to ensure her survival. At the same time, she bought some chemical analysis strips, such as pH test strips and heavy metal detection strips, which could quickly test the properties of water and soil, helping her choose appropriate resource utilization methods.

In a jewelry store, Su Yao wasn't there for the decorative value of the jewelry. She was eyeing the gold and silver items; in the apocalypse, precious metals like gold and silver could serve as a medium of exchange. While resources might be more valuable than gold and silver in the early stages of a collapsing civilization, as time passed and people began rebuilding order or interacting with other survivor groups, gold and silver could become important commodities. She also bought some jewelry-making tools, which would allow her to perform simple processing and cutting of gold and silver items when necessary.

A tannery became Su Yao's next destination. She selected a large quantity of high-quality leather, including cowhide and sheepskin. Leather can be used to make durable shoes, gloves, belts, and backpacks. She also purchased leather tanning and processing chemicals and tools so that she could process the raw leather into products that met her needs within the shelter. Leathers with special textures and those treated with waterproofing were her main focus of collection, as items made from these leathers would perform better in harsh environments.

Su Yao visited another toy and model shop, which offered a wide variety of plastic models and parts. These seemingly useless trinkets could actually be used to create prototypes of simple mechanical devices or tools. Models with gears, linkages, and other mechanical structures could provide her with inspiration and parts when building complex machines such as windmills and simple engines. Moreover, plastic model parts could be modified through heating and assembly to play unexpected roles.

A florist was also one of her stockpiling points. She bought a large quantity of dried flowers and flower seeds. Dried flowers could be used to decorate the shelter and create a warm atmosphere, and some dried flowers also had insect-repelling properties. The flower seeds were for planting around the shelter, if conditions allowed, to beautify the environment and improve her mood. She also selected some small gardening tools, such as small shovels and watering cans, to prepare for planting.

At an eyewear store, Su Yao purchased glasses of various prescriptions, including nearsighted, farsighted, and reading glasses. In the post-apocalyptic world, vision problems could affect survival, making eye health crucial. She also selected sunglasses and goggles. Sunglasses protect the eyes from glare, especially during prolonged outdoor activities; goggles protect the eyes when handling hazardous materials or dealing with harsh environments such as sandstorms.

Su Yao didn't even overlook a musical instrument repair shop. There, she found spare parts for various instruments, such as guitar strings, violin bow hair, and keys. These spare parts would ensure that previously purchased instruments could be repaired promptly if damaged, continuing to provide comfort and enjoyment. She also took some instrument maintenance oils and cleaning tools to extend the instruments' lifespan.

At a used electronics recycling station, Su Yao discovered quite a few good things. She collected some old computer hard drives; although the computers might be unusable, the hard drives could store useful information, such as agricultural knowledge, medical data, and architectural blueprints. She also selected some discarded electronic components, such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors. People with some electronics knowledge could use these components to make simple electronic devices, such as simple radios and signal transmitters.

Su Yao also visited a rope processing factory and purchased various types of ropes, including high-strength climbing ropes, lightweight nylon ropes, and elastic rubber ropes. Ropes have a wide range of uses in the post-apocalyptic world, such as climbing, building shelters, setting traps, and securing objects. She also selected some rope connecting accessories, such as buckles and pulleys, to enhance the flexibility of rope use.

Every stockpiling decision made by Su Yao was the result of a comprehensive consideration of life in the apocalypse. She was like an artist meticulously crafting a work of art, except that her work was designed to ensure survival and quality of life in the apocalypse, leaving no detail overlooked that might be useful.
