Upon hearing this, Cailan waved her hands repeatedly, "This servant is clumsy and incompetent, and I'm afraid I won't be able to serve you properly if you go out with me. This servant should stay at the manor!"
Jiang Segu lowered his eyes as he picked up his chopsticks, concealing the coldness in them. "Alright, you're a steady person. I feel at ease with you in the courtyard! I'll take Qiaohe out this afternoon. As for Qiaolian, you said you had a bad headache these past two days, so I'll give you half a day off. You can go out of the manor to see a doctor or go to the front courtyard to see Doctor Li. It's up to you!"
Qiaolian gratefully agreed.
Seeing that Qiaolian didn't ask about Jiang Segu's departure time as usual, Cailan assumed that she had forgotten because of her severe headache, so she said, "When will you leave the manor, Miss? I will go and inform the stables."
"It's not yet time!"
"The sun is blazing hot right now, young lady, why don't you wait a bit longer?"
Qiaohe glanced at the glaring sun outside and kindly reminded her.
Although it's March, the peach blossoms are in full bloom, but the sun is still quite strong, and it's not easy for a young woman to sit in that stuffy train carriage!
Most importantly, she didn't want to sit in a stuffy, poorly ventilated carriage!
Jiang Segu looked up at Qiaohe, but his eyes were actually glancing at Cailan out of the corner of his eye. "What? Now I have to pick the right time for me to go out?"
Qiaohe pouted, looking aggrieved, and said, "I was only thinking of you, Miss! Why are you saying such things to me, Miss!"
Jiang Segu snorted coldly, "I'm watching this with a cold eye, and I can't help but feel that you are the master!"
Qiaohe knelt down in fear and said, "This servant dares not!"
But deep down, he was filled with remorse!
Why did you have to bring up the girl's shortcomings?
She knew perfectly well that the young lady didn't like Young Master Liang now, but she still insisted on bringing up the time when the young lady learned embroidery from Cailan in order to embroider purses and handkerchiefs for Young Master Liang!
Now things are really messed up; the girl is angry, and who knows what kind of trouble they'll cause her!
Qiaohe trembled as she thought of Caiju, who had drowned herself in the pond.
Contrary to Qiaohe's expectations, Jiang Segu coldly said, "Alright, I don't need so many people to serve me. You may all leave!"
The three men curtsied and withdrew.
As soon as she left the house, Qiaolian used a headache as an excuse to leave the mansion.
Cailan, holding Qiaohe's arm, asked, "What's wrong, Miss? Why are you getting angry for no reason?"
Qiaohe was about to tell the truth, but then she changed her mind and complained along with Cailan, "You know how capricious our little darling is!"
"I just ran into Changping, but what did he say that offended you, young lady?"
Qiaohe pouted, "As soon as Changping arrived, the young lady kicked both Qiaolian and me out. Who knew what he said that provoked the young lady, and instead I ended up being the one in the wrong!"
She then sighed, "What can I do? I was born to be a servant!"
Cailan seemed to disagree, "Don't be ungrateful! You're a first-class maid in this mansion, a favorite of the young lady!"
Qiaohe pulled Cailan aside and began to pour out her grievances.
"You all only see my glamorous public image, thinking that serving girls personally means I'll be rewarded! But as you just saw, no matter if we're good to our master or not, if our master is unhappy, he can take it out on us!"
"Actually, the girl didn't say anything. Maybe she's just in a bad mood. Just be careful when serving her!"
Qiaohe sighed deeply again, "Ah, I wish I could get paid without having to serve others!"
A hint of emotion flickered in Cailan's eyes, and her lips moved slightly, but what came out was: "You, dreaming in broad daylight! Alright, I'm going to the stables to tell the coachman to prepare the horses! You stay here and keep watch, don't anger the young lady again!"
Qiaohe stopped her, "How about we switch? You stay here and I'll go to the stables!"
Seeing that her reluctance seemed genuine, Cailan tapped her on the head and said, "You, just stay put!"
Then he left in a hurry!
Cailan appeared to have gone out, but in reality, she hid at the courtyard gate and peeked out for a while.
Seeing that Qiaohe was still standing at the door with a displeased look on her face, he turned and left!
Qiaohe stood at the door for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn before she heard Jiang Segu's voice coming from inside.
Who's outside?
Qiaohe pouted and stomped her foot before replying, "It's me!" Then she lifted the curtain again and went into the room.
Jiang Segu put down his chopsticks. "You're gone?"
"Hmm!" Qiaohe whispered, "Miss, is there something wrong with Cailan?"
Jiang Segu watched with great interest. Qiaohe, who had been confused before but now realized that Cailan was problematic, asked, "What do you mean by that?"
“Cai Lan just asked the maid what Chang Ping said. She is not a meddlesome person, and as long as she does not offend the young lady, she will not care how angry the young lady is.”
But this time was different; she actually asked me on her own initiative!
Furthermore, everyone in this courtyard knows she's someone who doesn't manage things, yet today she unusually asked about the young lady's departure time—there's definitely something fishy going on!
Just as Jiang Segu was about to praise Qiaohe for her logical analysis, Qiaohe's train of thought went astray!
"Girl, do you think Qiaohe, like Xiuhe, is experiencing romantic feelings?"
Before Jiang Segu could ask her why she thought that way, Qiaohe spilled her analysis like beans from a bamboo tube.
“Miss, you see, she asked you when you were leaving the manor, but she didn’t want to leave with you. It’s clear she just wants to find out if you’ll be at the manor this afternoon so she can take advantage of the situation!”
At this point, Qiaohe's eyes widened suddenly. "Miss, did you see that Cailan's expression changed when she heard that Qiaolian had a headache and was going to see a doctor, and that I was going to go out of the manor with you?"
Once we leave, there will be no head maid in the courtyard, and the only second-class maids left are her and Cai Niu. Cai Niu is new and not favored by the young lady, so Cai Lan is now in charge of the courtyard!
